..
Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

I'm yet to understand the formula.

Can someone give an idiot's guide on calculating activity?

Thank you.

I'm yet to understand the formula.

Can someone give an idiot's guide on calculating activity?

Let's assume you joined on Jan 1st. Now go grab a calendar. Set a mark every 14 days starting on your join date (Jan 1st, Jan 15th, Jan 29th, Feb 12th, Feb 26th…). We'll call the period between each marked day and the next one (including the first marked day but excluding the next one, e.g. Jan 29th to Feb 11th) a "14 day cycle" Tongue.

During each "14 day cycle" your activity increases by one everytime you post, with a maximum of 14 posts. Additional posts don't raise your activity until the next "14 day cycle" starts.

Note that the activity is calculated every 30 minutes IIRC, so don't expect your activity to immediately increase just after you post.

Last, don't give this value more relevance than it actually has!

So each post up to a maximum of 14 during that 14 days cycle increase activity by one?
1 post increase by 1
10 posts increase by 10
14 posts increase by 14
15 posts increase by 14

Correct?

No, it's just 14 * number of two-week periods that you've made at least one post, or the number of posts you've made total, whichever is less.  It's basically the number of days you've been active on the site.

You say: 14 * number of two-week periods that you've made at least one post.

To me these sounds completely different.

It is calculated as the lesser of two possible numbers.

EITHER:

Your total post count.

OR:

14 * the number of two-week periods that you've made at least one post.

As is clearly stated in the first post of this thread:

The activity number is determined in this way:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

So:

If you post twice a week for 6 weeks (total 6 posts)
You'll have activity of 6, because 6 total posts is less than 14 * 3 two-week periods = 42.

If you post one time every 14 days, and then 50 times in the third week (total 52 posts)
You'll have activity of 42, because 14 * 3 two-week periods is less than 52 total posts.

If you post one time every day for the first 14 days, then 0 posts for the next 14 days, then 2 times per day for the next 14 days (total 42 posts)
You'll have activity of 28, because 14 * 2 two-week periods is less than 42 total posts.

If you post two times every other day for the first 14 days, then only 1 total post during the next 14 days, then 2 times every day for the remaining 14 days (total 43 posts)
You'll have activity of 42, because 14 * 3 two week periods is less than 43 total posts.

wow a long period of time to post into to reach any memberships (At least 2 months of activity to get a good status other than the Jr Member),it's calculated by the number of 2 weeks periods I am active in*14 (when I reach that post numbers that equal it) right?

I understand fighting spam, but the 360 second period you have to wait to post anything after login as a Jr.Member is just excruciating.

Maybe it is in your case. I am arguing that (i) in general ignores are bad (I use it as an indicator for people I don't know), (ii) having a clear ignore button doesn't mean your a sheep who walks on eggshells (yeah I'm vain and took offense a little  )

I wouldn't call it 'excruciating', but it is a minor annoyance, but it's there for a reason. You only have to bare it for a little while any way as it soon drops down. I'm on about 45 seconds now, I think.

I understand now the reason I am still stuck at 14 Grin but that isn't a problem since the command "reply" is available.

Code:
waittime = 360;
if(activity >= 15)
        waittime = (int)(90 - activity);
if(activity >= 60)
        waittime=(int)(34.7586 - (0.0793103 * activity));
if(activity >= 100)
        waittime = max((int)(14-(activity/50)), 4);

That's a good idea though. If only hero members could start topics then there wouldn't be so many useless "why are there only 21m Bitcoin" topics.

Some of the best threads aren't started by Hero Members, though. Also, I'm not sure people mind repeating themselves or posting links to the wiki.

I vote for a rule that takes off points for every necro bump. The older, the more points disappear.

While this is not a horrible idea, lazlo's pizza transaction was all but forgotten till lulzplzkthx necro'd it:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137.msg93554#msg93554

I would agree that generally a necro is a bad idea, though.

I understand that many good ideas are presented by newbies but limiting their posts would require more research on their part before asking a well known topic again. Maybe not hero member for topic start, possibly full member first.

Disallowing a necro bump is about as ridiculous as forbidding history books in schools. We all learn from history. Necro bumping is putting forward a bit of history for all to view.

Restricting newbs from making posts is also ridiculous. And I don't see what's wrong with necro-ing a thread, as long as the information or topic is still relevant. It's better than starting a new topic at least.

I disagree. Restricting newbies has it's purposes. One is to prevent spam and scamming. It's protecting others. You choose to use this forum, you were not forced to join. Therefore, should understand the measures and rules put in place to prevent mayhem.
