I prefer both bittrex and poloniex. Bittrex user interface is very good. Bittrex has simple graph and smooth graphics which enable trader to trade with easy and smooth . But the fees are greater than poloniex. poloniex  has their chat box  that able to discuss between trader and provide giveway on giveway tab. But i like bittrex than poloniex

bittrex and poloniex might be the best option for trading. but there is might be a local site that suit your country that might more helpfull but usually local site have a less volume and less variant

There's a lot of complain/issues in Poloniex right now like lag issues, deposits/withdrawals problem but still poloniex is one of the trusted trading site in cryptocurrency world I suggest if you are beginner in trading industry you can go in Hitbtc, liqui & bittrex this three trading site is one of the popular exchange site right now the platform are good and easy to understand you can search in google that this three are trusted and have a good reputation.

I prefer an exchanger site that was already used by people who are much more experienced in trading and are already very trusted and proven safe, I use Bittrex. I know Bittrex from someone who is really more senior in the crypto world, he is my close friend. So far it's very helpful and completely safety also well suited for trading.

For now I'm still using Bittrex and Poloniex and in my opinion these exchanges are the best exchanges for now. It's very trustworthy and very easy to use. The support work very quickly. Join any exchange you want but Yobit, it's the worst exchange ever and a lot of trader lost their BTC and other altcoins in here.

I am using bittrex and yobit without having any problem so far but I recommend Bittrex to you because bittrex has the best support system I have ever seen as compare to other exchanges and I never face any kind of problem in trades and transactions on bittrex till date.

Using Binance at the moment. Is that one of the best, or there are better ones?  I live in Sydney Australia by the way.

And which exchange has the lowest fees?

And do I need to provide photo ID etc to join them and to start buying coins?

Thanks:)
I can recommend you bittrex it is very simple and easy to use, especially to newbies,
and aside from that the yobit, because it is safe to trade your coins and etherdelta if you want trade new coins because most of new coins that i received it appears in etherdelta.

If you live in Australia, you can use Coinbase. It is convenient for all operations with crypto, but if you buy crypto with your card, the transaction can last several days. CoinJar is good for its low commission, but it deals with BTC only.
Try Bittrex either https://bittrex.com/

My recent best exchange I can fully recommend to any Blockchain technology minded individual is  https://Luno.com  especially now that they have added Ethereum wallet. It's the best for me now.

I really don't recommend any exchange at all, IF you are willing to buy alt coins find a local seller and meet at a safe place and exchange your cash for coins that is the best way for conversion. However, Exchanges are not safe.

Bittrex is the exchange I'm most comfortable with, they've been slow to add new coins lately though.

Bittrex is the best for me, and i always use bittrex because of its strong security features.

Bittrex is a trusted one, but there are others too.

HitBTC works very nicely and I didn't have any problems there.

Binance is also good, but I couldn't try a lot. Etherdelta is very bad for low volume. I don't prefer to use it if the others are meeting my requirements.
