Version 1.1 released. This version made the following enhancements:
1. Added more checkpoints, so to make the coin secure.
2. Fixed an oversight in the code (block halve, which will not be in effect until end of October).

*This is a mandatory upgrade*. Please upgrade before October 15, 2013. You are encouraged to upgrade as soon as possible. The source in github and Windows client download links below are updated.

The 'squared circle' or 'squaring the circle' is a 17th century alchemical glyph or symbol for the creation of the Philosopher's Stone. The Philosopher's Stone was supposed to be able to transmute base metals into gold and perhaps be an elixir of life.
- Frater5, Wikipedia Commons

Philosopherstone (PHS) - a fork of Diamond, with several algorithms fixed and improved. It is decendent of Novacoin/PPCoin with Pow/PoS. It combines the great features from Luckycoin (random blocks) and Florincoin (transaction message), is launched! No Premine!

There were a couple of new PoW/PoS coins launched recently, most have problems with PoS generation. Either we see zero-coin PoS blocks generated, or the generation is not accurately reflected in desired PoS percentage. In Philosopherstone we fixed these issues, and after 5 days the PoS blocks will be generated reflecting the precise interest rate defined by the coin (in this case 50% annual interest or 3.44% monthly interest).

Proof of stake coin is more secure and is much more resilient to 51% attack. Since 51% hashpower is not enough to execute the 51% attack. The attackers must also have at least 51% stake in the coin.

Philosopherstone provides annual interest rate of 50%, for stakes that are not moved during the period. This equivalent to 3.44% monthly interest. PoS blocks will be generated if the stake is held for more than 5 days.

Other specifications:

   - Each normal block has 64 Philosopherstone
   - 2 minutes block time
   - Difficulty retargets every block
   - Mining payout will be halved every 3 months (or every 64800 blocks)
   - Expected total mined coins will be 8,891,840 Philosopherstones
   - 4 confirmations for transactions
   - 50 confirmations for minted blocks
   - Support transaction message

   - Random bonus blocks are (on average):
      - 1 superblock of 512 Philosopherstones every day
      - 1 superblock of 128 Philosopherstones every hour (24 such blocks per day)
   - When getting superblocks, different images will displayed, so it is easy to see.

   - The default ports are 16281(Connect) and 16282(RPC).

HELP with POS stakes generation....
Do I have to do anything special to generate POS STakes in my wallet or will the wallet update everytime I open it. crediting the POS SHARES"Huh

PS.  I really like this coin as I think that POS done right can replace interest bearing accounts without the Bernake printing press risk... Now can we get kickstarter or piratemyfilm to start transacting in PHS?

I fixed the version issue mentioned a couple of people, download links and source are both updated. If you observe other issues and oversights, please report them. Thanks.

You can go to the source in github to get image files, there are three, displayed when you mine the normal block, superblock or super+ block.

Also you can get the 256x256 image from the following links:

You don't need to do anything, if you hold the coins after a few days (usually 5-10), the pos blocks should be generated automatically, as long as you open the qt client.

You can find more info of PoS in the web, for example:
https://cryptocointalk.com/blog/4/entry-19-what-is-proof-of-stake-how-do-i-mint-pos-blocks-work-in-progress/

I'm trying to compile philosopherstoned and I get this error:

g++ -c -O2 -msse2 -pthread -Wall -Wextra -Wformat -Wformat-security -Wno-unused-parameter -g -DBOOST_SPIRIT_THREADSAFE -I/home/one/philosopherstone/src -I/home/one/philosopherstone/src/obj -DUSE_IPV6=1 -DHAVE_BUILD_INFO -fno-stack-protector -fstack-protector-all -Wstack-protector -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2  -MMD -MF obj/alert.d -o obj/alert.o alert.cpp
alert.cpp:244:1: fatal error: opening dependency file obj/alert.d: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
make: *** [obj/alert.o] Error 1

Anyone have any ideas?

I do not, but please post the solution if you figure it out.

this is just an add on of the program. you can completely remove the call to make alert.o in the makefile.release to bypass that error.

also i just wanted to congratulate john towaki. this coin is cool and i love the name!

Thank you for posting the solution. (And philosopherstoned is a cool word.)

When should evidence the stake system is working kick in?

I really like the coin, but I'm confused on a few things:

Quote
Philosopherstone provides annual interest rate of 50%, for stakes that are not moved during the period. This [is] equivalent to 3.44% monthly interest. PoS blocks will be generated if the stake is held for more than 5-10 days.

Shouldn't that be coins instead of stakes?

Quote
- 50 confirmations for minted blocks

Shouldn't that be mined?

Quote
- Maximum number of Philosopherstones to be generated is 2 billion

Wait, what?

Forgetting the technical stuff, the big questions are: If I have coins in my wallet, from any source at all, and I don't move them, will I get 3.44% monthly interest automatically? Do I have to keep my wallet open and unlocked 24/7 to accumulate interest?

PoS coins that are held in the wallet are called stakes. It's just a term and nothing to worry about.

Quote

A mined block generates freshly minted coins - different coins sometimes use different terminology, but it means the same thing.

Opening your wallet once every few days is enough, you don't need to leave it open. After a while you'll notice payments coming in to your wallet automatically.

Hope that helped clear a few things up Smiley

FYI, I'm getting pretty poor returns at the phs.minar.cc pool. I noticed that I was getting more than twice as much PHS vs what I was getting at the pools with similar hash rates...but since things hadn't been 100% consistent, I decided to put my theory to the test: I have one machine solo-mining...and another identical machine mining at phs.minar.cc. Both are hovering right around 3 MH/s.

I found 5 blocks in the pool and 6 blocks solo-mining (one of them a 128 block) during the test period. During the same time period, with identical machines, here were the results:

Solo-mining: 448 PHS
phs.minar.cc: 110 PHS

I went back into the history, and I've been getting awful returns at the pool. I consistently mine almost 4 times as much PHS solo mining. I'm just curious if anybody else is having similar results...or if I'm just having insanely bad luck in the pool. Again, I hate pointing fingers/etc as I'm sure the pool operator means well and I appreciate the effort they put into setting up a pool. I just know in the past I have been screwed mining in pools...and I'm hoping this isn't another case of that. You would think things would balance themselves out.

Yes, thank you, it mostly does. Does it matter if the coins were solo mined, or mined in a pool and sent to me, so long?

I do not believe I am getting what I should, no. It's mostly a hunch as I don't a direct reference point, but still I only get about 1/2 to 3/5 of what the estimate says on the stats page. The payouts are consistent, however, if there were a scryptmining.com pool, I'd be on it in a minute.

Mine was initially a hunch as well (difficulty would drop and I still wasn't coming close to hitting the projections from the higher difficulty)...and now that I have several hours of controlled, simultaneous data comparing returns...it would be a pretty big coincidence that I'm consistently getting less than half as much PHS at phs.minar.cc vs solo mining. I'm leaving the pool for now...and anybody else getting similar results should probably do the same until this is sorted out.

I'm open to an explanation...but it's a little frustrating when I realize how much hash power I wasted on that pool. Looking back over data from a few days back, I was pulling in slightly more PHS solo-mining with the 1.3 MH/s from the single 7990 in my desktop than I was from one of my 3 MH/s machines in the phs.minar.cc pool over the course of about 10 hours. This means I was getting about 3 times as much PHS per MH solo-mining during that time frame as well.

I urge everybody to look over their history and draw their own conclusions. I'm interested to see if everyone is affected here.

I agree I thought that GrowthCoin might be competitor but with that fast 45sec block generation (VS 2 minute blocks) and 64PHS a block vs. 100GWC per block.  This coin is far more rare and unlikely to be blast mined like growthcoin is at the current time.... SO I am sticking by PhilosopherStone for now.  But what I would really like to see is a productive entrepreneurial use for this awesome savings tool called a PhilosopherStone.  Something like FineArtAmerica.com where I could buy artwork for philosopherstones or something like a KickStarter.com for Art or Engineering projects using PHS.  Also we could use a BitMit.net for PHS.  With an inherent interest rates projects have a real ROI figure to work with (although Art may have no ROI).

I, for example, am sitting on a patent for an innovative vertical axis turbine that needs the engineering and testing for a more full size model producing electricity... (for running a server farm...mining currencies Wink)

PS if anyone is having problems getting the Blockchain for PHS here my node list... just paste this list into you philosopherstone.conf an you will be good to go

I noticed that too, the difficulty would plunge, my est. dailies would shoot way up, but there was no noticeable change in the frequency of payouts.
