With marijuana popping up in the news so often and California's recent legalization, there have been a few big spikes in almost every coin with a weed-related theme. The problem is that not all of these coins actually have ties to the marijuana industry and are just trying to capitalize on the name. I put together this list to help everyone see the difference between each coin. My goal is to help investors make informed decisions backed by facts and real world relationships. For this list I will only be covering coins listed on CoinMarketCap. I'm also not counting "we want to be the top crypto for cannabis" as a tie to the industry, since almost every single coin says that. If I missed something let me know!

Please note that at this point I have had no direct contact with any of the developers regarding the status of their project(s). All of the information in this post is based off of what I could find on their websites and social media accounts. Percentage changes shown below are calculated weekly and are not meant to be viewed as completely up-to-date numbers; they're included to give a quick idea of recent performance.

Total Market Cap (16 coins)
$82,942,122  (▲ 9%)

Top 5 Market Cap
1. PotCoin (POT) - $28.0 mil (▲ 10%)
2. HempCoin (THC) - $19.0 mil (▲ 37%)
3. Paragon (PRG) - $14.3 mil (▲ 2%)
4. Token (TKS) - $7.3 mil (- 0%)
5. DopeCoin (DOPE) - $7.2 mil (▼ 13%)

Grabbing a few of each
Glad to see a bit of interest in these coins but the purpose of the list is to show that not all of them are worth picking up Wink A few of them have actual ties to the industry that should allow them to grow, while others are only related in name. Unfortunately it seems like most investors don't look further than the name so a couple non-active coins with no real connections to the industry have been pumped a few times.

To be honest I hate this trend and I think that such kind of projects cast a shadow over the whole crypto market so I just cant support any of them.

I'd be interested to hear why you feel that way. Is it because of how you feel about marijuana itself, or do you just see these coins as redundant since there might be better options out there?

Weekly Update

Top 5 changes: CANN moves +1 to #3, DOPE moves -1 to #4

Development changes: CCN downgraded from Potentially Active to Not Active after dev didn't follow through with a proposed January 1st update.

The days leading up to the new year were very eventful for marijuana coins. Multiple coins were frequently top gainers on Bittrex and other major exchanges. Less than a week in to 2018 there are gainers and losers in the top 5. THC, CANN, and TKS have all leveled out higher than where they were last Friday. POT and DOPE both suffered a slight decline. Of course this is just after the initial rush, it will be interesting to see what happens once California starts reporting revenue and various projects continue to develop.

Also I've added the total market cap for all 15 coins listed here. Interestingly, a single coin with that market cap would currently be at #104 overall on CoinMarketCap (below Enjin Coin, above Triggers).

Great work putting this topic together OP, you've clearly put a lot of work into this and the information presented is very useful to have in one place.

How so? I think there are some really interesting coins listed here, I'm glad that some of them actually have ties to the legal marijuana industry instead of just being a proof of concept.
Or are you just against marijuana in general, legal or not?

I wonder why won't you support? what is wrong with Marijuana? it is one of the most beautiful gift of the mother nature. as it has to be under control of the lobbies of course they make it illegal and make you guys think that is a bad thing by using all kind of social progrraming.

Thanks for the kind words, I was a bit worried this list was just going to immediately fall into obscurity so I'm glad someone appreciates it! Grin

Regardless of attention though I do plan to keep updating on a weekly basis. I find it fun and very helpful for my own investment choices.

Absolutely. As detailed above, a few of these coins are developing partnerships and creating projects that will allow them to grow right alongside the legal cannabis industry. They're becoming spendable faster than even some of the overall top 10 coins.

But yes, some of them are shitcoins that will never amount to anything, just like 99% of altcoins in general.

Weekly Update

Total market cap change: Down 15% (since January 10, 2018)

Top 5 changes: DOPE moves +1 to #4, CANN moves -1 to #5

Development changes: None.

When the market bleeds, marijuana coins bleed right along with it. Most of these coins saw their value go down right along with BTC's dip as many would expect. Tokes became the center of much speculation which resulted in enough gain to offset the losses and level out nearly 50% higher than where it had been the week before.

Project news updates will come later tonight.

Thanks for providing the great overview about cannabis based coins. I truly believe that since the legalization of recreational marijuana in California, more US states will follow and the value of Cannabis based Coins will definitely increase.

Total market cap change: Down 36.5%

Top 5 changes: None

Development changes: None.

Marijuana coins followed the same trend as every other altcoin during Bitcoin's plunge below $10k; red everywhere. Once BTC started to level out once again they continued to follow the trend and most managed to start going green again. The coming weeks will be very interesting, especially once California and others start reporting income from their recent legalization.

I'm a bit behind on news updates at the moment. Hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to make sure everything is current.

Though the total market cap for marijuana coins has gone down, not every coin is dropping. Most of the loss seems to be coming from the top 3 coins, especially HempCoin (THC). Meanwhile DopeCoin (DOPE) and CannabisCoin (CANN) have both seen increases in their market caps over the past week. The gains are small, but any sort of upward motion is welcome after the recent crypto bloodbath.

Logically, just like every cryptocurrency out there, this is an investment either for short or long term. Cryptocurrencies are popular right now because everyone sees them as a way to make money. The CannaSOS platform is trying to get rid of the word investment because it will most likely have a self-regulating platform that will minimize volatility of the token – so it won’t promise 1000% returns like Bitcoin. Of course logically the price will go up with more users, but this could be a good long term purchase.

Bitcoin's downward trend continues, so it's not very surprising to see losses like this. Most of the total market cap was lost by the top 5 coins, with HempCoin (THC) dropping by nearly 50%. However, the coins with active devs are still pushing on despite panicking traders. HempCoin (THC) has a hard fork planned for later this month that will introduce masternodes. DopeCoin (DOPE) has made more progress on CryptoBillings and have introduced a bounty program for signing businesses up. Tokes (TKS) continues to announce new partnerships. There is still much to be excited about amidst the bearish market activity!

I'm surprised by how many exist as well. I know THC is planning on masternodes, but that their develops have been really bad hitting self imposed roadmap targets and even worse at communication (check out their reddit thread).

Do any other the other coins have teams have strong community outreach and any others planning on masternodes?

wow, I didn't even know that there are so many coins that are associated with cannabis. I know HempCoin (THC), PotCoin (POT), DopeCoin (DOPE), CannabisCoin (CANN), but the others was a surprise for me. Thanks for this useful comparison and for updates! I'll be watching this topic, because these tokens are becoming increasingly popular
Happy to provide the info Grin There could be even more out there as well; I didn't even know about Paragon (currently #3 of all marijuana coins) until someone mentioned it in this thread.

As I've been researching these coins it seems to me that the ones with the most community involvement are DopeCoin, Tokes, and Growers International. Some of the other active coins are still fairly involved, but not quite to the same degree.

But I haven't seen anything about any other coins moving towards masternodes. Quite a few of them are PoS though, so it's still possible to passively earn coins (though perhaps not as consistently or as much value as a masternode would provide).

It looks like the worst of the BTC dip has passed (for now), which means it's time for alts to start performing again! Marijuana coins are still down overall due to a couple of the biggest coins sustaining significant losses during BTC's drop, mainly HempCoin (THC) and Paragon (PRG). Things are starting to turn around, however, as both Potcoin (POT) and DopeCoin (DOPE) increased their market caps during the past the week. These changes have helped narrow the gap between the top 5 marijuana coins, especially THC and POT. Tokes (TKS) is also closing in on CannabisCoin (CANN) for the number 5 spot with right around a $1 million market cap difference. We could be in store for a few big shakeups over the next few weeks!

I've never supported tokens with drugs, just like I've never supported drugs, I'd rather support something else, like the coin Deyneris Targarien. Well, why destroy yourself? After all, there is a lot of useful entertainment.
I'm curious to know how you feel about privacy coins like Dash or even BTC itself, since coins like that have been adopted by the illegal drug market (meanwhile most of the coins listed here are directed at the legal cannabis industry). Is it just the coin's theme that throws you off, rather than the actual use?

Very good comparison. We need more good info like yours. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, glad you appreciate it! Grin the +merit link is right over there >

Minor update: I've added the "On the Radar" section at the bottom of the main list where I will add links to coins/tokens that aren't yet listed on CoinMarketCap. These mostly seem to be in the ICO or pre-ICO stage. I'm not going to bother listing more information about them until they establish themselves enough to make the 'real' list.

If anyone is aware of any others I should add, please let me know!

Honestly i don't find your topic interesting it has a lack of news and informations you don't include important updates this 2018 like in the hempcoin(THC) and the future events that will gonna happen this year. For the price its not good to update always. There is an apps and i think you want to gain only some attention here for possible donations or merits. Correct me if im wrong its upon my whole point looking for what you did.

I'm not sure what you're talking about in regards to HempCoin (THC) seeing as I've already linked to their tweet regarding their hard fork and masternodes. As far as I can tell that's the last time they've released any sort of news regarding their coin or the business around it.

I think you've missed the point of this thread. As I state in the OP, the purpose of my list is to point out which coins have actual ties to the industry they take their name from. I started it because I've grown tired of seeing coins that are dead or not linked to the cannabis industry at all getting pumped whenever there's big news (like California's legalization). Most people aren't willing to do much research on the various coins they invest in, so I hoped to shed some light on coins that actually deserve attention by combining it all in one page. This is not meant to be a price watching thread, that is included only to give people a quick idea of the value of the biggest coins on the list without having to open 16 different tabs to compare market caps.

Also correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like the only reason you're posting at all is to make sure you meet a requirement for a bounty Wink But yes, I certainly would like some merit if the point of merit is to reward helpful posts and multiple people in this topic have stated that they found it useful. Not all of us were lucky enough to achieve a high rank before they implemented the change, so we can't all get away with meaningless posts.

Weekly Update

Total market cap change: Up 34%

Top 5 changes: None

Development changes: Bongger (BGR) changed to Potentially Active due to a recent post by the dev. Warning added to Paragon (PRG) due to a class action lawsuit being filed against them in America.

Finally, everything is looking green! The biggest losers during BTC's dip seem to be regaining much of the ground they lost. A few interesting developments have sprung up recently, such as a class action lawsuit being filed against the Paragon team for their ICO in California, USA. It will be interesting to see how this affects the coin's performance going forward, as it currently has one of the biggest rebounds of any marijuana-related coin.

So this is why THC or Hempcoin is pumping right now because a fork will come on february 23?
This  could be a good news for the HOLDERS of THC,we will make a lot of money in the next few days i am going to buy more today! I have been a  follower of marijuana coins for quite a while,we need legalization all over the continent!

Yeah, people tend to go crazy for masternodes these days. One would hope they're doing the hard fork for the good of their network, but I suppose most will welcome the associated rise in price as well Tongue

Weekly Update

Total market cap change: Down 30%

Top 5 changes: Potcoin (POT) moves +1 to #1, HempCoin (THC) moves -1 to #2 (also note that at the time market caps were gathered, Tokes (TKS) was behind #5 ranked CannabisCoin (CANN) by less than $5,000)

Development changes: None

The throne has changed hands for the first time since I started this list two months ago! Coming off of a very up-and-down week for crypto, Potcoin (POT) managed to stay fairly steady while HempCoin (THC) lost over 50% of its value. Now we'll see if Potcoin can hold on to the top spot or if HempCoin will make a vengeful return. Most of the other listed coins also lost what they had gained back during BTC's recovery, though a couple of the smaller coins like GanjaCoin (MRJA) managed some upward motion.

News updates will be coming later tonight or over the weekend; whenever I can find the time.

Weekly Update

Total market cap change: Down 30%

Top 5 changes: Tokes (TKS) moves into #5, CannabisCoin (CANN) is no longer in top 5

Development changes: Marijuanacoin (MAR) downgraded to not active after failing to deliver any updates during February like their website promised. There may be a community takeover of this coin at some point.

While the overall market cap of marijuana coins is significantly down for the second week in a row, things aren't so bleak for many of the coins on the list. A few of the smaller cap coins managed to make some nice gains, including Tokes which gained enough to push CannabisCoin out of the top 5. The big change from last week is holding as well, with HempCoin (THC) falling further behind Potcoin (POT).

I have a very negative attitude towards drugs, of any kind to light or heavy, so I'm completely against marijuana being associated with crypto currency, of course to someone it seems wrong, but I think that's right and that's my right.

Whenever someone says this I like to ask how you feel about other coins that have been adopted as forms of payment for illicit substances such as Dash, Monero, or Bitcoin itself. Does it bother you that these coins are used for things you have negative feelings toward, or is it just the theme that directly connects the coins listed here? Of course you are entitled to your own opinion, I'm just interested in hearing the reasoning behind it.

As far back as the beginning of digital forms of cash, there have dependably been ties with "hazy gray areas'', for example, delicate medications like drugs and betting.  Occasionally we see another altcoins that related into some kind of topic

Percentage changes shown below are calculated weekly and are not meant to be viewed as completely up-to-date numbers, they're just there to give a quick idea of a coin's recent performance.

Total Market Cap (16 coins)
$110,380,251  (▼ 30%)

Top 5 Market Cap
1. PotCoin (POT) - $37.9 mil (▲ 6%)
2. HempCoin (THC) - $28.6 mil (▼ 2%)
3. Paragon (PRG) - $16.7 mil (▼ 8%)
4. DopeCoin (DOPE) - $8.7 mil (▲ 5%)
5. Tokes (TKS) - $5.8 mil (new)

I'd be interested to hear what makes you want to invest in their project while they are being hit with a lawsuit in America. I'm not saying you shouldn't invest, but the lawsuit just seems like a big glaring mark against them that turns me away (sort of like BitConnect).

Weekly Update

Total market cap change: Down 25%

Top 5 changes: Paragon (PRG) moves +1 to #2, HempCoin (THC) moves -1 to #3, CannabisCoin (CANN) moves in to #5, Tokes (TKS) moves out of the top 5

Development changes: None

As Bitcoin continues to waver, alts have not been able to stage a significant recovery and marijuana coins are no exception. A couple of the biggest marijuana coins experienced the bulk of the total loss. Interestingly the only coin in the top 5 that managed to maintain a gain over the past week was Paragon, which is also the token that's being subjected to a lawsuit in america. If anyone reading this took part in the Paragon ICO or has purchased their token recently, I would love to hear your thoughts about how the lawsuit affected your purchase decision (if it affected it at all).

News updates coming later tonight/over the weekend

Top 5 changes: DopeCoin (DOPE) moves -1 to #5, Tokes (TKS) moves in to #4, CannabisCoin (CANN) moves out of the top 5

Development changes: None

Finally back in the green! As of this writing, BTC looks to be starting to rebound after a few days of dropping and dragging all alts down with it. Some of the smaller coins on this list managed to stay steady or post nice gains during the drop, while a couple of the biggest coins continued to fall fairly significantly. Tokes has re-established itself as a top 5 marijuana coin fairly convincingly by launching in to the #4 spot over the past week. Now we'll have to wait and see how each coin continues to perform if BTC's upward trend continues.

I'm behind on updating news, will do my best to get to it ASAP!

Well, I expected this thread, and although in my country marijuana and other drugs are prohibited, I realise this potential market and would like to invest in one project. Recently I heard about Budoo, something like that, can't remember that properly, but a point is that they have application. What do you think?

You may be referring to Budbo, which I have linked near the bottom of the main post in the "On the Radar" section. Personally I haven't done much research into their project in particular, but based on a quick glance at what they've posted it seems like they're going for the same thing a few of the other more established coins are already doing. DOPE, THC, TKS, and GRWI all have similar features and goals, so it's up to you to decide which team you trust the most.

Weekly Update

Total market cap change: Down 11%

Top 5 changes: DopeCoin (DOPE) moves +1 to #4, Tokes (TKS) moves -1 to #5

Development changes: None

The crypto market has seemingly reverted to a bearish trend after some nice steady growth, but that doesn't mean bad news for every marijuana coin. DopeCoin (DOPE) and HempCoin (THC) managed to post gains over the week, and Tokes (TKS) managed to maintain the market position it recently gained. A few of the smallest coins have been heavily affected by BTC's volatility though with some market caps dropping below $100,000. Currently only 2 of the coins out of the 16 listed don't contribute to the total market cap (Bongger and BlazerCoin), but a couple more could be joining them if things don't improve soon.

News and development status will be updated this weekend.

Dash is an interesting coin to watch for the cannabis industry as well.

Last year Dash partnered with Alt Thirty Six, who provides payment software for marijuana payment processors. Alt Thirty Six has agreements with marijuana dispensary POS providers covering more than 70% of the industry, giving Dash exposure to over 2,200 dispensaries.

Maybe Dash ATMs start popping up inside dispensaries this year??

Yeah I've heard quite a bit about how people think Dash is going to become a favorite of the marijuana industry, though a lot of that seems to come from the illegal drug trade rather than legal cannabis businesses. It's just not on this list because it doesn't have a marijuana theme and doesn't advertise itself as a cryptocurrency for marijuana (it just happens to be a coin that has a lot of features that are attractive to the industry).

To be honest I hate this trend and I think that such kind of projects cast a shadow over the whole crypto market so I just cant support any of them.

In my opinion, such projects overshadow the entire crypto market so I can not support any of them. And they promise to make hard for and some small updates like conferences by showing new project partners and new whitepaper.

Apart from the gibberish at the end, it certainly doesn't help that all he did was slightly edit a comment from the first page  Wink

But to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he was trying to articulate an opinion rather than spamming to get his post count up... A lot of the comments left here seem to express negative feelings towards cryptocurrencies with a "drug" theme despite their intention to work with legal businesses, though not one of them has been able to respond to me asking why they're ok with supporting Bitcoin or other coins that have been adopted heavily by the illegal substance market (and don't get me started on all the worthless money grabbing scam tokens that they push without batting an eye). Also I doubt a lot of these people would feel the same if they had followed a tip from some high profile shill like McAfee and ended up holding big bags of these MMJ coins.

Anyway... Weekly updates will resume in ~2 hours and lots of news/development statuses will be updated tonight.

Weekly Update (catch-up edition)

Total market cap change: Up 9%

Top 5 changes: HempCoin (THC) moves +1 to #2, Paragon (PRG) moves -1 to #3, Tokes (TKS) moves +1 to #4, DopeCoin (DOPE) moves -1 to #5

Development changes: Coming soon

The marijuana coin market has remained remarkably steady over the three weeks since I last posted an update. As BTC has seemingly shaken off its bearish trend, many alts are starting to experience growth once again. It's great that this development has occurred during this time of the year, as I'm sure many of you know April 20th (aka "4/20") is a popular date for marijuana enthusiasts around the world. Many events and announcements will be held on that day in the marijuana industry, and the marijuana-related cryptocurrencies will be no different. Plenty of hype is building up around updates being teased by some of the top coins in this thread, so now time will tell whether investors will puff or pass.

News updates coming tonight!

To be honest, it's too funny. Crypto currency and pathetic Marihuana can not be compared, because one from the other does not depend and is not connected in any way.

To be honest I hate this trend and I think that such kind of projects cast a shadow over the whole crypto market so I just cant support any of them.
First of all, you do not understand marijuana. It is absolutely safe to use within a controllable range. I think you don't understand what is marijuana. It does not make sense for these currencies to contribute to the development of the entire industry because marijuana itself has its meaning. You should treat it correctly. I am very optimistic about this aspect. In fact, tobacco and marijuana are a category here. Please do not affect everything. Where there is light, there will be shadows.
