Darn, if only some valiant knight had tried to tell the Verge community that this was a possibility.  Maybe they could have done something about it...... LOL

Verge should just become an Expanse token. Cheesy The can code all the same features into smart contracts.

Honestly, I thought about this after the 1st attack. Really, I think they should consider it or converting to another token. It's a logical solution IMO

Yes, please! But not this Expanse bullcrap  Lips sealed

First the hype about the partnership, then everything ends with an exploit and porn hub.

People use your brains, which company is going to partner with Verge, no company wants to be associated with porn.

Second, POW means proof of work, it has now failed twice,

Does any one know why blocks from more than 19 hours before are being added into the blockchain? Wasn't the block drift set to 2 hours? How's this possible?

because they "walk back in time" - every of the hacker crafted block has a timestamp previous to the one before.. at some point you are at 19h ... if he would mine some more blocks, you'd be at 24h.. then at 36.. etc. at a certain point in the future.

since the coin compares current time with the latest block's timestamp it thinks "wow, the old block is hella old, I gotta lower difficulty so someone finally gets the chain moving!" and thus lowers the diff.. the more blocks come, the lower the diff.. at a certain point it's at the minimum but still the manipulated blocks fly in so it will never retarget up again until a "recent" block is mined with correct timestamp.

PS: I've explained all that stuff previously already Smiley

Ah okay ty, I was just confused because the drift time is meant to prevent this. Am I wrong in that regard?

No you're (almost) correct but if you produce a lots of blocks, you can always use the max drift time for each subsequent block. So for example Block 1 -> Block 2 uses max drift, then you can use again max drift between block 2 > 3 which leads to an even bigger drift from 1->3 ... and so on

So, was it patched or did the hackers just stop for a bit to collect profits?

I wonder what's preventing me to do this myself. It doesn't feel that too advanced. Just set up a mining pool with a Verge daemon that alters the timestamps and then go to nicehash.com and rent enough hashpower.

There is nothing from stopping you.  The best part is the devs proposed patch literally does 0 to fix this latest issue.  It is clear he does not even understand how the attack took place let alone what it would take to fix it.

Such attacks is a usual thing in our time, especially if we speak about big money. So we should always remember about protection and good software.

Just saw a news story about XVG being attacked and thought they must be talking about months ago.... people are still mining and buying this coin?!?!?  I was mining it on SuperNova when OCMiner broke down what was happening months ago... I was thankful it held value long enough for me to cash out and now we are back to the same dev team running the same copied codebase that they clearly don't fully understand, long after the phantom bank was going to be announced, and people are still buying and mining this coin?!

I am in awe....  To be honest the attackers now deserve the money, they are obviously a more skilled and dedicated dev team.

Curious.. In reviewing the wallets associated with the attackers, I see negative balances. For ex:

https://verge-blockchain.info/address/D7sbycsrSQpj6AjfjsHPb54fvEzN6JH3fp

Total Sent (XVG)   Total Received (XVG)   Balance (XVG)
56940.00000000   54020.00000000   -2920.00000000

So, what is the deal here? I don't have much time to look..

Display bug? Double spend exploit?

Is there a block explorer for XVG that actually works?

Block 2155850 to 2206272 were mined with super-low-diff for the hackers.. About 35 Millions in a few hours raher than a few weeks.. all alone for one person or group..

I'm seeing it now as my wallet is catching up ... flipping between two timestamps.

EDIT: Nice work Ocminer on explaining everything. Thx Smiley

As soon as I've posted this, the attacker stopped his pool .. now we need to rollback the last 13h of the chain or leave the attacker with 13h * 1 second blocks

I was taken for 3m + $XVG last December. Dev said he would help me try to figure out where it went. After numerous attempts to take him up on it, radio silence. At the same time I asked to be paid the 2-3k $XVG that I "won" in an official XVG contest last July. I got a "sure I'll send it tonight". After a few weeks of read messages, no replies and 3+ years of loyalty to Verge....I said goodbye.

I can't say I'm surprised or that I feel bad for them. Karma.

XVG has a high ranking. It looks like a really good project. I am looking for an opportunity to invest and support this project as soon as possible.

High rank in getting attacked? That's for sure. But its high ranking is due to its marketing team. They are really good at it. But the coin is clearly shit as it got 51% attacked twice. Do you even understand what this attack has caused? Verge investors are losing money as we speak.

Wow guys look  Cheesy - vergebots.

your shitcoin has been attacked you fucking retards.

OCMINER IS HELPING YOU FUCKING PEASANTS.

Fact that you are calling verge a shitcoin clearly shows how much you know about crypto in general Smiley. But hey maybe you will learn a bit more about it when you FOMO in on 17th april.

It got attacked again and 35m verge was minted this time. Does he have the right to call verge a shitcoin now ha?
