Ether can be used for participating in ICOs. Once you have ether, you can buy ERC-20 based ICOs with ease.

Besides, having ether can enable you to trade on exchanges that allows trading in ether/altcoins pair.

You can also buy and Hold Ether for the future, so that if it rises you can then sell the profits on top and exchange it into Fiat currency.

To me personally, Ethereum is a good long term investment. I am currently holding ETH as a long term asset. I also use Ethereum for buying of good ICOs, and Trading. Prefer it for trading because its transfer fee is usually cheaper than that of bitcoin in almost every platform.

When bitcoin network fees are quite high, this is my alternative of sending to someone that I owe money. But now I'm using ETH just like bitcoin and that is an investment. I don't want to spend too much with it today because I was still in lose with ETH. Last year I was using ETH mainly to invest in ICOs as it was more widely accepted, it was cheaper and ensured a faster transaction (I was also more hesitant to spend my BTC). Now I am planning on investing a bit more in ETH to keep as part of my long term portfolio.
