Quoting this again as I need some more people to test it:

Hi Jean-Luc, CFB and others interested;

I'm ready with that client side implementation of an SHA256 test. I would like some people to test this. I have tested it on the latest Safari, Firefox, and chrome.

As far as I know this will only run in IE10+, earlier versions of IE are not supported.

You can download the files here: http://nxtra.org/update/update.zip

Unzip, then go to your nxt folder and navigate to webapps > root. Paste the two files there.

Now you should be able to open http://localhost:7874/update.html in the browser.

For this test you will always receive the update notice. An older version is hardcoded in. This is to allow for testing of the sha256 hashing function.

Just follow the instructions; download the client, and then drop it over the dropzone to see if it compares to the official release.

If all goes well you should see this screen:

Now also test it with another file, just a simple txt file or another zip, it doesn't matter. Just pretend this is a fake release.

If that goes well, you should see the following:

I hope this will increase the security of everyone, if you have any feedback, please share.

My Nxt ID for donations is: 3209075099254042753 - any donation is appreciated.

Thank you,
Wesley

Some more screenshots:

Initial state when you open the page:

And after you click download, you get to see the dropzone where you have to either drag the downloaded file to, or click to select it from a file dialog.

an ALL-in-one Info Central App?

Will the app have a notifications function? for breaking news, etc.

Why not try nxtchg.com. Works OK for me and fast (so far) on deposits & withdrawals.

All alternatives r better than to being hostage at dgex.

I try to persuade my dev team to post here their CVs for transparency - it seems they don't have any anonymity issues but they are making some second thoughts if this is good for them.

I wouldn't advise to reveal real identity of those who work on Nxt core...

Yeah, Ripple is a competitor, why use it to trade NXT.

I disagree. Ripple is a centralized payment network, Paypal 2.0. They can't compete with Nxt.

Absolutely... and users will be allowed to decide when and how often notifications are delivered.
Automatically its latest news/content in real-time (updated by default every 2 hours) and can be configured based on users needs.

News is key and I can bring it in from all official/unofficial (if qualified with good content) and crypto news/article sources.

Don't forget... this discussion was in the middle of the dgex drama and most people were NOT thinking clearly.

It felt to me that the Dgex situation was being used/manipulated to further Ripples aims and not HELP Nxt.  The benefits to Nxt were short term, shortsighted and potentially harmful.

Which really turned me off from the idea.

sorry landa, I disagree you here. You turn it upside down and have the impression you defend dgex actions.

dgex did what it did and is harmfull for NXT. We forgive but we don't forget.

If you agree with his actions so be it. But I thought you wanted the best for NXT.

same with Uniqueorn first he was kicked by graviton on the forum, next he was a global moderator.

I dont understand what you still see as advantage on dgex and that forum.

edit correction: it is not as much the forum that bothers me it is the ties with the exchange.

It is indeed best if a forum were used that has no ties with any of the exchanges so that it can act in good faith at all times.

The best way is to host such a forum on Nxt network.

Guys, why don't you change that terrible design on https://forums.nxtcrypto.org?

My eyes hurt, I am afraid I will get a headache if I look at it for too long.

Black background is rarely used on major public sites outside niches, like gaming.

also afer NxT is able to host a forum we need normal web platforms.
currently NxT has 8000 accounts and every user has min. 3-4 accounts.
that meens we have 4000 user maximum.
this is nothing, nobody knows about NxT at this moment.

so we still need to provide all support in the normal web, also if there is an NxT internal forum.

I'd like to ask what people's opinions are on the subject of illegal content in the nxt blockchain.

With the alias system it's possible for someone to put a small amount of arbitrary user-generated data into the blockchain, at low cost (but not zero cost, except if you engineer yourself to be the forging node). This is currently limited to 1000 characters. There is some restriction on what characters can go in an alias so let's assume each alias can store 700 bytes of data.

With the right scheme, an image file could be encoded into a number of aliases. For instance, using the key 'image0001' it could be done using these aliases:

image0001index: index of aliases image0001001 to image0001150 (or just something that describes the file as being in 150 aliases)
image0001001: uuencoded representation of bytes 0-699 of the file
image0001002: uuencoded representation of bytes 700-1399 of the file
 ...
image0001150: uuencoded representation of bytes 104300-104999 of the file

Total cost: 151 aliases, or 151 nxt, or 13mBTC, or 10 USD, for a 100KB file. This would be adjusted accordingly once the minimum fee is reduced (to 0.1, 0.01, 0.001 etc) and the price of nxt changes.

Applications to both do the initial encoding into aliases and putting on the blockchain, and reproducing the image file from the initial alias 'image0001index', would be easy to produce, and legal in most jurisdictions including USA and Europe.

If the image encoded was a highly illegal one, this would give problems for nxt and its users. Although users hosting the blockchain would not have knowingly put this content on their hard drives (i.e. it's not premeditated), once they have been made aware that it is there they would have a responsibility to remove it. At the moment there is no mechanism to remove or modify aliases that you don't own (and still have a valid blockchain), so the only option to remove this content from your hard drive would be to stop the nxt server, delete the blockchain, and not start the server again.

Of course, the primary person responsible would be the person who initially uploaded the file, but it is conceivable that i) the nxt for this was purchased in an untraceable manner, and ii) the injection into the network was done via for tor something similar.

What motivation would someone have to do this?
1. To attack the nxt concept
2. To make nxt eventually stronger (by forcing it to have to deal with the issue)
3. For the lulz
4. Genuinely wants to distribute highly illegal content (not highly likely, as this is not an efficient means of doing so)

Other systems such as Bitcoin and Datacoin have similar issues, but they're not our concern here. With nxt's 1000 character limit, the issue falls somewhere between the two. There is talk about hosting forums on the nxt network; I've no idea how this would work but presumably this problem would be worse in such a scenario.

Now, I doubt such content already exists on the blockchain, and it probably won't appear there this month or next. But someday it will.

So, questions to anybody who is hosting a nxt server on their Raspberry Pi, Windows PC, or cluster of Linux servers in the cloud:

 - Are you happy that you would be storing highly illegal content on your hard drive?
 - Are you happy that you would be distributing this content?
 - Are you happy to go to prison for this?

And questions for anybody who has a stake in nxt:

 - Do you think we should be doing something to address this issue?
 - If we do nothing, and such content were to appear in the blockchain, do you think nxt would survive?

To clarify, I am not talking here about an AACS encryption key, a Windows licence key, or a magnet link to the latest episode of Game of Thrones; but rather child pornography.
