can we at least come to consensus on this: use some of the fund to extend or reinstate cfb's contract if he agrees. + this if you agree

Besides real problems regarding binary formats, its psychologically most destructive property is that everybody has the self-proclaimed best encoding, the fastest encoding, the most space-efficient encoding, the most flexible encoding and so and so which only differ in one of two bits somewhere and therefore makes them 100% incompatible. Thank you.

Why? Because binary is the way to go if you want fast, efficient, direct, buzzword, buzzword, ....

Look at text-based format. Do all these requirements matter there? No. Their implementors focused primarily on the content in conjunction of readability, maintainability, flexibility, expandability and independence. All properties, which are required for the maintenance of long-term applications.

+1

Besides, in my experience good compression will almost always beat any attempts at "clever" bit manipulation and is mostly transparent.

This paper looks like a typical case of a computer scientist with not much real world experience trying to teach programmers how to do things...  Roll Eyes

Need 4.5btc guys so before i head over to bter anyone interested in purchasing 55k nxt which is roughly 0.00008200
Id prefer an active thread member tht i see here everday to trade with pm if interested.

It appears that we are about to bounce off a long term trendline so if u want to get more for your nxt I would suggest waiting 2-3 wks to see if price shoots back up above the current highs.

Tai Zen

As of 2014-04-09 I no longer post as "Asian Prepper" and will post under my real name "Tai Zen" to eliminate confusion.

Having to deal with binary formats on a daily basis (for ca 5yrs), I cannot possibly express, how much I AGREE with you

Should we make a poll for that?

Yes, plz. Coz if the community doesn't come to a consensus even on this then the coin will be sent to the genesis. Smiley

community voted not to send them back to genesis....funding committee will manage the funds....the longer the committee takes to arrange itself....the less funds they will get from you to manage.

When did this happen? Sending leftover money to the genesis account is a good idea. Otherwise, we start to look like a government with lobbyists and different interests all politicking to get a piece of a pie that doesn't belong to them.
Already happened. People encourage people to do things for NXT and people do things for NXT and get paid for it.

Quote
There may be better ways to handle the money, but without some sort of super majority, I think it should be burned. Keep in mind that by burning the money, there is no net loss of wealth to the Nxt ecosystem. Every NXT becomes more valuable after the burning and it all balances out.
So, what is the reason you cannot share a piece of your value with others that have not that much?

As you say: distribution is always a good thing for NXT.

Quote
There are probably 3-4 million bitcoins lost forever from early miners, and every other bitcoin gains value because of that. It's no big deal.

Personally, the only thing I can think that would be better than burning it would be to distribute it to smaller accounts to help counter the criticisms about distribution that plague Nxt. But again...that is central planning and just an example of how power corrupts.

Edit...words.

Maybe, you are right. On the other hand side, you should take these circumstances into consideration:

1) NXT is new; centralism is intrinsic to new ideas, because they come from a single point; development is also performed centrally right now; etc. etc.
2) Until this bootstrapping phase isn't over, some central pushing here and there won't hurt.
3) When the bootstrapping phase is over, NXT should be able to sustain itself without being baby-sit by its inventors. Then all centralization should be gone. I totally agree.
4) If NXT is not able to sustain itself after bootstrapping, then, well, you know...

Also from experience, I would recommend using a Type-Length-Value (TLV) messaging structure to facilitate expandability and maintenance.  Endianness is easily dealt with.  Additionally, the binary bytestream may benefit further with addition of compression algorithms, assuming the data is non-random.

gvans nxt monolith  -files for production available

As requested, I have done some research and processed manufacturing files for nxt monolith.
Instruction pdf and dxf-files for lasercutting are provided. Lasercutting is the easy and preferred method as it results polished edges for acrylic.
Also iges and stl files for 3d-print and cnc are available.

instructions pdf: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qeydnudw0z37f7o/gvans%20nxt%20monolith%20instructions.pdf

public folder: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/avdfu4e3o17breq/1jxGsOXtJM

I think these will make brilliant marketing material for Bitcoin conferences and they are exclusive novelty items too. I may look up for possibilities to manufature these myself. But feel free to use all the data to get these produced if needed asap for conferences etc. Consult and discuss details with your manufacturer before production.

I've changed up the reference client installer again

It now searches for Java on your machine, and if it doesn't find it, it will download and install either x86 or x64, depending on your system. I also changed the Post Setup Launcher to actively ping http://127.0.0.1:7874/index.html to detect when the Nxt client comes online. It will then re-direct to https://127.0.0.1:7875. I had to use the unsecure port because the SSL Cert error prevents the browser from returning a 200 ok message which is what I use to determine if Nxt has loaded.

As stated before, there is no longer any need to remove an old client version before installing a new one. Simply download the new version and the installer will update it.

The "Folder is in use" error that showed up every now and then at the end of the install has also been fixed.

I'll use this for the next release from Jean-Luc, but I'm not going to go back and update my release of 0.5.11.

Please, PLEASE test this installer and give me your feedback on any errors. I have run it on Windows 7 x86 and x64, and Windows 8 x64 without issue. So far my overhead with things I've had to add to make this work (Jquery, PostSetupLauncher, .bat files, etc.) is about 144KB. The Uninstaller is another 719KB.

The P2P transport mechanism is THE core component of the platform, and should be optimized.  Parsers can be built to translate into more usable structures.

Why 15k to everyone? It S not to fair for the 3(only 5k more) also considering that we decide to split the Work in 3 people to gave a better app, next time i will make something useless to get 15k or maybe i will cheat... Congrats to this fake Contest!
