I partially agree with you. This is one of the biggest advantages that altcoins possess over Bitcoin, but some altcoins are great long term investments too. Just take Ethereum and Ripple for example. They have come a long way since they were initially launched and have skyrocketed in value over time making them great long term investments just like Bitcoin. I know several people who profited in a big way by HODLING these coins for the long term. At the moment, I firmly believe that Stellar Lumens and EOS have huge long term potential which is why I am HODLING them for the long term.
