Ok, it seems that POS generation is less aggressive now as many of us repented  Grin Grin Grin
The last 10 blocks were generated by just 2 wallets.

I am putting a 7950 at the pool to see if we can start generating POW blocks.
How's that going so far anything ?

Tokyo is putting some serious muscle to it. Nothing yet.

Still the same 2 wallets:

C3Wzwg6YhBG8et5PTWVafZAANc8PoPJZvm Balance: 5.7k
CAx2XzyGxHWNRykHFoBw8YPqaDhfDafw4G Balance: 22.7k

If this your address, mind shutting down your wallet for now?

The chains are moving in a much smoother rate though. Hopefully the storm passes us soon.

I have found the issue with UFC and it is due to the wonderful cloudcoin base it was cloned from.

Block 194947 was the last POW block @ 1/15 16:33:48

The block before it:

Block 194946 was  @ 1/15 16:48:33

Notice the ~900 second backward time difference. This is a known flaw in Cloudcoin and now UFC.

This causes an issue with the POW targeting making is less then zero, and therefore impossible to ever accept another POW block into the network because that is impossible.

Fixing would require a hardfork as the rules have to be changed. Then we have the other POS issues to deal with.

Do I start over and write a completely new client/daemon from a STABLE base? Do I try and spend the time to preserve the current blockchain or do a relaunch and distribution (Automatic this time now that the Windows exception problem has been dealt with)?

I mined UFC today for a bit to see if I could get PoW moving again. Situation is looking grim. I have confidence that we can get UFC moving again. I vote that we just relaunch on a more stable codebase and fix all the known issues.

Would everyone setting a reserve balance in the QT to stop POS minting do anything?

No, in fact it would probably be better to keep the wallets open as the chain can be sustained with POS blocks.

The issue is due to the impossible situation I described and only a hard fork can fix it. No POW block can be accepted because the target range is impossible.

Concerning the Federation Credit Pool:

Due to the inability for the UFC block chain to process POW blocks, mining is shutdown until fixed. Please direct your hash power to KED or GPL.

Ouch.

Well KED is looking good, GPL is running nicely. DPZ should be out soon

We really can't Put UFC on the exchange if no one can mine any more of it.

This is quite a learning process. From what you said there is no easy work around we need to build the coin over.

What can I do to help?

i second starting the coin over, you could even release it with the exchange, so all the new people to the exchange feel like there is a coin that they can mine.

I'd love to have a stable coin out BEFORE launching the exchange.

I'd love to launch the exchange next weekend.

I know the difference between wishes and reality, but it's certainly an unpleasant situation that we are going through, and it is not the first time.

I am honored that many of you are very patience and faithful in supporting these coins.

My vote is to bite the bullet and do it right this time.

Idea for possible UFC relaunch:

At the moment I am seriously considering relaunching UFC with a new algorithm. I think it works better from a lore/canon prospective along with practical reasons.

Lore:
As of now, we have two Star-trek coins that are working fine:

Gold Pressed Latinum (Scrypt-Jane & POS)  – Hard to mine and rare, a perfect match to Star Trek canon. POS is 365 days, further lending it to the hording nature of the Ferengi alliance.

Klingon Empire Darsek (Scrypt & POS) – Pretty much a mainstream technology as it is a Novacoin clone tailored around the original Darsek specifications.

   Klingon Empire technology vs. Federation technology-  The Klingon Empire has been around for much longer (1000's of years) then the Federation yet technology wise they are on somewhat equal ground since around the 23rd century.

   Humans did not discover warp travel until 2063, After which they formed the Federation and advanced their technology to and even surpassed the Klingon Empire in only a few hundred years. This leads me to believe that Darsek is a good fit for the Klingon Empire.

   I think UFC with a newer type of algorithm would be more appropriate.  UFC is now just another Scrypt - POS coin. It has a  message system nobody uses, and can cause difficulty with mining back-ends as they have to be tailored for the extra data. “Super Blocks” which many people did not even know was there and to me does not match with the ideals of the Federation, this seems more of a feature the Ferengi  would incorporate.

   After some research I believe Blakecoin would be a good match. It uses the SHA-3 candidate Blake-256  algorithm, which is newer technology then SHA256D or Scrypt. This protects it from SHA256D ASIC. It has a CPU miner (modified minerd) and 2 GPU miners (Modified Cgminer and Reaper). Recently a pool back end has been released as open source.

   This is not a POS coin and I think this is good for two reasons. We already have two POS coins and considering the earth culture in the current Star Trek universe, seems more appropriate.  It seems to me that it would be viewed more as a true tool of trade rather then a tool of trade that also serves to produce wealth itself. Taking a look at our world today and the lessons we are learning about hoarding and interest, I think this is one way the human race would go with its view of currency, especially when compared to the culture in the Star Trek version of earth.

Well, this got more long winded then I intended. Let me know what you think.

What's the ETA ?

On one hand, Blake may give us some protection from potential scrypt fpga or asics appearing in the near future. On another, we have many other scifi coins to be created in the future.

As you might have noticed I'm a blakecoin fan.  And am active on the thread for it. i also have a FPGA set up to mine the coin.

Buledragon the dev has been resistant to others trying to clone the coin. He feels that getting the first one fully off the ground is a better use of time and energy

But Merging the awareness of UFC with the advantages of blakecoin seem like a very good idea.

Can we make UFC a SHA256 coin? GPU mining is soo wasteful, ASIC mining is much more efficient. We can also attract more exposure from BTC miners and give BTC diff some relief by giving the BTC miners UFC to mine. I vote for SHA256. This rewards all the early miners because once it goes SHA256 the coins that have been mined so far will be exponentially more valuable. You will never mine as many UFC with a GPU ever again. Its a nice thank you for those who have mined UFC for months without being able to trade the coins on an exchange. This will also attract serious firepower from more professional miners. This can help attract volume on the exchange and media exposure.

If we make UFC a SHA256 coin, I will aim 360ghash at it. Lets get dangerous.

While not trek coins, FFC and QBT are HSA256 and will be on the exchange.

If we make a SHA256 it will need to retarget diff quickly as large miners and pools can make the network hashrate swing several orders of magnitude.

Blakecoin can be done on FPGA which means it could become a new kind of ASIC someday but will not need to worry about  that until UFC becomes very big and profitable.

Most SHA256 coins are very low value because they can be so massively mined.

Yep. it looks like we jumped to the next N-factor

Code:
{
"blocks" : 392245,
"currentblocksize" : 1000,
"currentblocktx" : 0,
"difficulty" : 0.00098328,
"errors" : "",
"generate" : false,
"genproclimit" : -1,
"hashespersec" : 0,
"networkhashps" : 23339,
"pooledtx" : 0,
"testnet" : false,
"Nfactor" : 13,
"N" : 16384
}

Last I checked it was 12, it also looks like the hash difficulty is dropping to get the network back on target-time.
