Idea for possible UFC relaunch:
At the moment I am seriously considering relaunching UFC with a new algorithm. I think it works better from a lore/canon prospective along with practical reasons.
Lore:
As of now, we have two Star-trek coins that are working fine:
Gold Pressed Latinum (Scrypt-Jane & POS) – Hard to mine and rare, a perfect match to Star Trek canon. POS is 365 days, further lending it to the hording nature of the Ferengi alliance.
Klingon Empire Darsek (Scrypt & POS) – Pretty much a mainstream technology as it is a Novacoin clone tailored around the original Darsek specifications.
Klingon Empire technology vs. Federation technology- The Klingon Empire has been around for much longer (1000's of years) then the Federation yet technology wise they are on somewhat equal ground since around the 23rd century.
Humans did not discover warp travel until 2063, After which they formed the Federation and advanced their technology to and even surpassed the Klingon Empire in only a few hundred years. This leads me to believe that Darsek is a good fit for the Klingon Empire.
I think UFC with a newer type of algorithm would be more appropriate. UFC is now just another Scrypt - POS coin. It has a message system nobody uses, and can cause difficulty with mining back-ends as they have to be tailored for the extra data. “Super Blocks” which many people did not even know was there and to me does not match with the ideals of the Federation, this seems more of a feature the Ferengi would incorporate.
After some research I believe Blakecoin would be a good match. It uses the SHA-3 candidate Blake-256 algorithm, which is newer technology then SHA256D or Scrypt. This protects it from SHA256D ASIC. It has a CPU miner (modified minerd) and 2 GPU miners (Modified Cgminer and Reaper). Recently a pool back end has been released as open source.
This is not a POS coin and I think this is good for two reasons. We already have two POS coins and considering the earth culture in the current Star Trek universe, seems more appropriate. It seems to me that it would be viewed more as a true tool of trade rather then a tool of trade that also serves to produce wealth itself. Taking a look at our world today and the lessons we are learning about hoarding and interest, I think this is one way the human race would go with its view of currency, especially when compared to the culture in the Star Trek version of earth.
Well, this got more long winded then I intended. Let me know what you think.
