I just updated/cleaned up the OP a bit too.

AND I just noticed there is FINALLY an EAC > BTC exchange that is not Asian. If it hasn't been mentioned yet:

OK, I'm in.  I find the mission statement of this project very inspiring, and since there is renewed interest and development activity, I'll join in.  I just registered on coingather.com and put a few orders there to get my first EAC as a first step. In addition, I don't find the file wallet.dat in the EarthCoin directory. I need to find it and replace it with my old wallet.dat backed up in 2014. Has the directory / file structure changed since 2014?

yw, the wallet.dat is located at C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\EarthCoin
You have to replace Administrator with your login user on windows.
note that the "Application Data" directory is normaly hidden so you have to set "Show hidden files and folders" in your folder options.

And yes you have to replace the wallet.dat file with your old one to get acces to your coins in your old wallet.
