The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

Is this based on a faulty premise? Are scrypt ASICs even price-viable? I've read that they're not much more valuable than GPUs.

I read that they are going to be more expensive (a litle) than GPU but  they need less power. A rig with 2 MH/s comsumes 24 KW/h each day. A Scrypt ASIC of 5 MH/s consumes 2.4 KW/h each day

I'm going to put up another node now on a cheap VPS.

Will some other people please do the same?

You just need port 5889 allowed inbound, and the wallet run with the -listen switch.

Thanks boris, when I get home I'll do the same.

Imagine the a lot of the focus on crypto were to be diverted to variable-n scrypt right now....just after all the companies developing scrypt asic's sunk millions into development.

This would cripple them permanently. Theyd be gone even if someone could come up with an asic for these types of coins.

Apart from that . . the scrypt asics really only offer power savings right now so ~20% increase in profits. Alot of them are sitting in the 50+nm range right now though. . so there's plenty of room for improvement down to the high 20nm range.

What I'm saying is that the scrypt asics will one day provide a better hashrate and offer power efficiency in the next generation of them.

Exactly, which means we're not going to see anything like the sha256 ASIC influx.

Hey fellow verters!

Ofcourse we're all very happy about the current rise of Vertcoin. We've been the fastest rising coin for 3 days in a row now with the 24h increase reaching as high as 357% earlier  today!
And since you're all reading this i'm convinced you know everything about the awesome features Vertcoin has to offer when you compare them to LTC for example.

But after reaching this much volume the rise probably hold for a while in a few days. And this is we're we (the community) should come in. We've got to start organising things to make people able to use VTC for practical purposes other than speculating on the value of the coin. We need to start Recruiting people with extensive technical knowledge to create trade platforms, we need people with a marketing background to keep promoting this coin by actively writing well-constructed articles about it's benefits in comparison to other coins. What we also need is people with graphical skills, creating infographics, banners, t-shirts and what not. And ofcourse we need to get more miners to get the network even more stable.

To get all these things done we'll need well-educated people willing to dedicate alot of their time to this coin. To attract these kind of people i suggest we start a marketing & promotion fund to make sure we can compensate these people for their time and dedication to our project.

Now to start i've got a few ideas wich i think can help this coin to get on it's way to replacing LTC or what the heck, even BTC.

Websites

Currently there isn't really a way to actually spend and use your vertcoins. A platform should be developed to do all kinds of things with your coins, exchange for BTC/LTC and even directly to fiat, quick escrow services, a pay-pall specificly designed for vertcoin and some sort of e-bay where people can offer goods to be exchanged for VTC and VTC only.

You could also think about lottery/casino websites for vertcoin where you could play games like poker/blackjack with your VTC.

Social Media

We should also start a Social-Media campaign promoting the pro's of vertcoin compared to the other cryptocurrencies. Social media will be especially important in the campaign to reach the mainstream public. ( At wich point known retailers will also start accepting VTC)

Articles/essays

We also need professional writers and perhaps journalists to promote the coin, they will be writing contructive posts about what whould be the benefits of using VTC as a currency. This campaign will be aimed at the well-educated people and ofcourse at possible investors.

Ofcourse there are many more things we could do to promote the coin but i believe that if we put time/effort in these causes vertcoin will surpass any other Cryptocurrency and become the next standard.
Let's get involved people and create REAL demand for our precious coin.

I'd like to start the fund to make these great things happen right now to start these projects as fast as possible, for more information about myself check this topic.

I know the price is fluctuating alot atm. But think a moment for yourself, would you rather own 100 VTC with a value of 5 dollar or would you rather own 90 VTC with a value of 10x or even 25x that amount due to awesome community effort?

Start sharing and let's get this project going. Donations can be forwarded to this adress: Vn6rPFuEtAtcpaEKLRdGKYopDtE6cNvQBb
I'll keep daily or even sub-daily updated about the amount of VTC in the wallet and the community will have influence about where we are going to spend it and how much by voting.

Let's get VTC to keep going Vertical!

For more information you can aways send me a PM or e-mail me on Fastpow@gmail.com

Cheers and keep up the good work!

OK guys some other people should be putting nodes up too - my first one is now at 95.85.62.207

Here's the procedure to do it on the smallest VPS available from Digital Ocean https://cloud.digitalocean.com which costs less than a US cent an hour to run - please put some up. These instructions are for ubuntu 12.04.3 x64 server, the default OS on Digital Ocean.

Create an account, and create a droplet, the smallest size, in a location close to you (so they naturally spread out)

The password will be emailed to you when you create it.

Get putty to be able to connect to it - http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

Just use the IP address in the digital ocean control panel for the droplet, then login as user root with the password you were emailed.

The first bit creates a pagefile because these VPSs are RAM limited, and otherwise you'll have trouble compiling vertcoind

dd if=/dev/zero of=~/swapfile1 bs=1024 count=1024000
sudo chown root:root ~/swapfile1
sudo chmod 0600 ~/swapfile1
sudo mkswap ~/swapfile1
sudo swapon ~/swapfile1

Now we update, install the toolkit, get the vertcoin source and build it:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential libssl-dev libdb-dev libdb++-dev libupnp-dev libminiupnpc-dev miniupnpc libboost-all-dev git
git clone https://github.com/vertcoin/vertcoin
cd vertcoin/src
make -f makefile.unix

Copy it to the path:

sudo cp vertcoind /usr/local/bin

Create a config file:

cd ~
mkdir ~/.vertcoin
echo "rpcuser=node" > ~/.vertcoin/vertcoin.conf
echo "rpcpassword=34MGFf934ljDRrfd54dsf" >> ~/.vertcoin/vertcoin.conf
echo "rpcallowip=127.0.0.1" >> ~/.vertcoin/vertcoin.conf
echo "rpcport=9332" >> ~/.vertcoin/vertcoin.conf
echo "daemon=1" >> ~/.vertcoin/vertcoin.conf
echo "server=1" >> ~/.vertcoin/vertcoin.conf

Start Vertcoin:

nohup vertcoind -listen -maxconnections=250 &

Help it sync:

vertcoind addnode 95.85.62.207 add
vertcoind addnode 46.246.108.216 add
vertcoind addnode 96.252.6.205 add

Now you can

watch vertcoind getinfo

Set this up:

sudo echo "nohup vertcoind -listen -maxconnections=250 &" >>/etc/rc.local

So it auto starts on boot if you reboot the server.

And watch it sync the blockchain

If you're going to (like me) snapshot it and bring multiple ones up, please do let the first one sync fully (see http://explorer.vertcoin.org/ for current block height, 29488 at the time of writing this) before you shut it down to sync it, otherwise you will be part of the problem trying to connect to the scant few wallets out there listening for incoming connections.

To duplicate it, you must shut down:

sudo shutdown -h now

Then in the digital ocean web interface, go to droplets, click on your node, go to snapshots, take a snapshot - it will take a couple of minutes.

When it finishes snapshotting, it will automatically start up again.

Now you can create new ones in seconds from the snapshot. You just create a new droplet, but instead of selecting Ubuntu as the OS, you select the section where your images are and you'll see your snapshot in there.

New, Snappy Vertcoin Exchange
I've launched my new exchange https://cryptx.io, and one of the first currencies offered is Vertcoin.

I created this exchange because I was tired of waiting 30 seconds for a page load and having 1/2 my trades drop due to timeout.

I've load-tested my trading engine to almost 1,000 transaction per second, so hopefully you'll find trading here a little snappier.

Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

Hi ConceptPending,

Would be nice to see the market without sining in... Just to get an idea of the speed, the volume (yes I understand that it will be low right now), and to just get a feel for how well it works.

I don't like to have to sign up first.

I do agree with you that CoinedUp's speed is horrible. And transfers in and out of Cryptsy leave something to be desired too, so I am interested.

Also, do you have 2FA (Google Authenticator would be great IMO)?
