What kind of specs would a server need to run a p2pool say with a couple of hundred users?

You should go for a minimum of 2gb/2cores.

edit: if you're doing it on a vps, u can start with a 1gb/1core and then you can always expand and upgrade the specs without losing data and with a minute's downtime..

Update will be released around 7PM UTC time this Friday. (2PM Eastern / 11AM Pacific)
Here is what we would like to accomplish with the upcoming update:

1) Change block difficulty re-target to 1 minute to resist multi-pool mining & dumps to help steadily build the price.
2) Add transaction message support.
3) Update to latest version of Bitcoin/Litecoin client.
4) Reduce the block reward by 0.5% every 7 days starting at 8000 DGB.

Gravity Well vs Re-Target
From our research we can not see what if any advantage the gravity well would offer over simply changing the re-target time to 1 minute. In fact, the gravity well would actually allow for more coins to be mined for a few minutes after a dramatic instant hash increase when compared to changing the difficulty re-target to 1 minute. The gravity well implementation would complicate things for us and cause issues with our Android wallet. Since both achieve the same desired result (ending multi-pool driven hash swings & coin dumps). We would like to travel down the path of least resistance.

Built in Wallet Update Feature
Xploited had the best answer to this. Isn't the point of a crypto currency to avoid centralization? By implementing a single location that all wallets can update from we are also implementing a single point of failure to the network that could potentially be taken over by an attacker who could cripple the network. We want to make sure DigiByte will remain strong and resilient to attacks.

Block Reward Increase
The idea of producing most of the coins right away and entering the deflation stage as soon as possible is very interesting to think about. However, at this point we feel there are several reasons why we should not go this route. Had we talked about this before we launched it might be a different story, but not now that we are way beyond launch.

It would be very unethical and unprofessional of us to increase the block reward. This would cause an immediate decrease in price and as such it would be very discourteous to current investors. Some of which have invested several thousand dollars worth of Bitcoin into DigiByte.

Another reason for not mining all the coins right away is mining itself. Mining keeps a coins network strong. In order to keep miners mining, they need coins to mine. Just look at Quark, many miners have jumped ship and the threat of a 51% attack from bot nets continues to increase. Miners should and do deserve to be incentived well into the future.

Block Reward Decrease
We are not looking to do anything dramatic here. Instead we are looking for a solution that will benefit everyone. Miners, current investors and future investors.

We will reduce the block reward by 0.5% every 7 days.  This gives DigiByte over 20 years of profitable mining. A nice half percent decrease is much easier for people to calculate and for us to market. Reductions will occur on Fridays to give a slight psychological boost going into weekend trading.

Examples: Two Fridays from now the first reduction will occur. It will go from 8000 DGB to 7960DGB
Week: 1 Reward: 7960
Week: 2 Reward: 7920.2
Week: 3 Reward: 7880.599
Week: 4 Reward: 7841.196005
All what i have to say is thank you! but you still need to implement one more thing! Coin mixing to give anonymity to the sender/receiver, read it and it's a nice feature to add to a coin, when someone ask what this coin has to offer you just say "have anonymous transactions!"

Anyone tell me if I should be worried if my pool hash rate doesn't add up to what my individual card hash rates seem to tell me on sgminer?  I queried it and just got told don't worry its because its calculated by somethings.. not really an explanation now and I'm too new to know one way or the other

Depending on pool you use-  It could be determining your hash value from accepted shares.  Your card is hashing but every hash doesn't have value.  Depending on how they calculate, you might display less hash on pool then your card, or if your on a hot streak, you might display more hash then your card.

to be honest i'm still working it out, my currnet settings are

--lookup-gap 2 --thread-concurrency 8191,8191,8191 -g 2 -I 13 -w 256 --auto-fan --temp-cutoff 90,90,90, --temp-overheat 85,85,85 --temp-target 68,68,68, --gpu-memclock 1500,1500,1500 gpu-engine 1065,1065,1065 --expiry 1 --scan-time 1 --queue 0

and i have undervolted my Sapphire R9 280X Dual-X OC cards to 1100/1120/1100 which seems stable right now

I haven't played with clock speeds yet

My temps come out at 67/77/67 ( the 2nd card is right next to the 3rd, but I think 77 is an OK temp now.... anyone disagree?Huh)

Hashrates I think I'm getting 710/717/718 at max i've seen, not sure about an average yet as the numbers fluctuate pretty rapidly still rather than settling on a certain kh/s

im using this to mine Darkcoin:
sgminer.exe --kernel darkcoin -o stratum+tcp://drk.coinmine.pl:6090 -u camarada.1 -p 1 -g 2 -w 256 --lookup-gap 2 --thread-concurrency 8192

When you look at your BIN file name does it what does it actually say? Does it include Darkcoin in the file name because i've had trouble specifiying the kernel to use, Of all the ones in the sgminer kernel folder it uses ckolivas, not the srypt130302.cl kernel i downloaded which is supposed to be optomised for my cards

jesus, all any of these coins do is go down, there is not a one of them that goes up. No matter what the current price is of any coin, be sure you are looking at the high, they will all only go down.

you need to announce a 1M bounty to be added to cryptsy. I wonder how long it would take then...

cryptsy will only make the price go lower than it is.

Actually not correct at all. The largest crypto investors use Cryptsy. This attitude that Cryptsy is bad
is dangerous to your coin. The more people read that being said in a thread over and over the less value
your coin will have.

If your goal is to make the price go up AND down over and over on it's way up LONG TERM --- instead of just down -- you actually have to be listed on a more liquid
exchange. BTER - Cryptsy... MCxnow... etc. Not easy to get on.

Coinmarket.io is pretty great for trading speed but now it's known for having coins that have only gone down for 10 days now.
And rapidcoin that they listed 1 day after the coin opened basically got me and many others scammed when the Dev ran on day 2. Their habit of listing
anything and everything and doing it a day after coin launch pegs them as risky. But they are pretty awesome
for trading speed ... I really like their site

Just trying to help.
But you can't exactly force or beg Crytpsy to list you. You have to get the momentum, hype, and volume to get listed.
Same with all the big exchanges.

In reality it's like the chicken and the egg. I think if the coin has the hype, sales, and is unique is some great way it will get listed.

That is what is comes down to.
