It takes a little bit more technical savvy, but technically, everything works.  I'm still not loving the percent of orphans I'm getting, but everything is working if you get your stuff setup right.

but this launch is really rubish..

so i've downloaded the wallet, opened the console, typed "setgenerate true" my machine is whiring. do i need to do anything else? how do i tell if i've hit a block? the console doesn't show anything other than the command i've just put in.

You'll see that you've found a block but nothing will show up in your wallet.  If you go to the debug window and type "listtransactions" it will show you what happen to those supposed found blocks.  They are always orphans though.
