You learn basic science and maths at school, even if your career (not carrier ) is not related to maths or science. People do this because you need some basic understanding of maths and science in daily life. The same holds true for economics as well.

I think the significance of stuying Economics comes from the need to understand how the market works. Economics is not the study of how to make money. It is the social science of which factors determine the production and distribution goods and services in a consumer, capitalist society. We study Economics in universities because Economics has an impact on all walks of life and true to form universities offer a large variety of modules to reflect this. You could be studying anything from public policy to environmental economics.

I would not say that economics is a necessity to study while in university, but it is definitely helpful and it's always great to seek advice and be taught a specific subject by people who are extremely knowledgeable in that field (of course it depends on where you go to university). There are quite a few people in this world who excelled without going to college, but I would say there are more people who did go to college and are doing great in their careers. Like I said, it's not a necessity, but it is most certainly helpful.

Economics is a great (though not a crucial) subject to study because it provides the foundation for so many other subjects. It is much easier to understand business, cryptocurrencies, and even seemingly unrelated topics like politics, law and history, if you have an understanding of economics.
