Their wallet is out of sync (so no zeitcoin deposits or withdrawals) , but their trading engine is still active.

Just receive a reply from their support, their was a glitch, and they needed to resync the blockchain.
Once resync is finished, zeitcoin's deposits and withdrawals will be back online at SouthXchange.

Enthusiasm is non-existent for a guy expecting to literally double his litecoin holdings using ZEIT as the investment to make that happen.
(According to his video.)

He has a working wallet, but also claims it is a dead coin.
Definition of a dead coin is no working wallet and a frozen blockchain.

ZEIT wallet works and it blockchain is updating constantly.

He accurately points out there have been no github updates.
No need to fix what is not broken.
Updates made to PoS coins in that time were moving from coin-age to block depth which has proven to be a mistake ,
as moving to block depth introduced fake staking issues in those other coins based on pivx code.
So far there has been no major improvement of PoS coins for ZEIT to incorporate into it's design.

Can't make up my mind of whether the guy was doing a hit piece on ZEIT or an investment piece,
there are hints at both.  

Your final statement seems to be correct, a bit of both I guess. But I look at it as even bad news is good as people are discovering Zeit even if it's looking into making a quick buck.
As long as it gets people talking. Having working nodes is always good too.

SouthXchange has been experiencing a memory usage from Zeitcoin daemon (over 3.2 GB),

I am a Windows User , so linux is not my knowledge base.
My Windows ZEIT Wallet is only using ~2.3 gig of memory.

How much memory usage are our regular linux users zeitcoin daemon using?
And does anyone know any ways they can decrease memory consumption?

On Ubuntu 18.04 I'm getting memory usage of around 2.4 GB, but I'm currently in sync mode. I'll check again when I'll catch up with block height and start staking.

During stacking phase memory usage is around 2.6 GB,
