I'm very disappointed for what new rules added in this forum this is really unfair cos i know my self as a jr.member i'm still newbie for some topic and sometime's trying hard to answer the threads but hope you give a chance the new member here to give a chance to remain the JR member because there is no schedule to tell that we got new rule added coming up even a date that tell to all member they got a new rules for all jr.member that we need at-least 1 merit to rank up in jr.member . Now what damage to the bounty campaign will reflected to the jr.member who already participate in campaign it will be not counted any state or not ? so sad Sad

I am disappointed for some reason. I am joining bounty campaign and suddenly my rank has been demoted and I cannot continue my campaign because I am not wearing their signature. But it is good for some reason. Spammers will be lessen. Post that are not useful to this forum. I think everyone will cooperate and our post will be in high quality and this is useful to the readers of this forum. Our knowledge in cryptocutrency will increase. Hopefully it can help this forum.

I'm very disappointed

You have every right to be. At the end of the day, this has stopped you from earning free money. And who wants that chance to be taken away from them, huh?

but hope you give a chance the new member here to give a chance to remain the JR member

You have a chance to remain a Jr. member, only if you can earn just 1 Merit with your posts, which doesn't seem to be a very tough task, though it might be one for you.

there is no schedule to tell that we got new rule added coming up even a date that tell to all member they got a new rules for all jr.member that we need at-least 1 merit to rank up in jr.member.

Would you have left your bounty hunting tasks and start working on this if you were notified for the change that you are gonna need 1 Merit to be a Jr. member in future? I doubt it. And if you would do this in that case, you can do it now as well, only if you have the ability to achieve what it takes.

Now what damage to the bounty campaign will reflected to the jr.member who already participate in campaign it will be not counted any state or not ? so sad Sad

This doesn't damage any bounties, it only damages the hunters, who have made this forum a marketplace for getting money for doing nothing. Such people (including you) should either start dedicating some of your time to the forum, or simply leave it and find another job (I assume that's what you people take it as).

Too many rules, in the future new users would would not register here instead to a new bitcoin forum. This crazy rules alienates new users that is possible bitcoin adopters. I've seen bigger forums than bitcointalk that is properly run and maintained without resulting to such rules.

You woke up from October 17, 2011 to September 17, 2018 just to post this. If you don't like this forum then as theymos said, vote with your feet and leave. If there are better forums then you're just wasting time even posting here and if this was true then you would be gone already. The actual fact of the matter is that there are probably no better forums on the entire internet for earning than here, hence why there are so many shitposters and whingers at the very fact they now have to get a solitary merit to be able to earn. People just got so lazy, greedy and entitled that they're outraged over such a minor change which doesn't even go far enough. You and everyone else do not care about having to contribute, you just want to earn as easily and as lazily as possible and now that's been made a tiny bit more difficult. I hope one day theymos will actually remove signatures from even higher ranks and only give them to people who actually contribute something here. Then that will actually make a difference to the quality of this board. Good luck trying to beg or buy 1000 merit.

apparently this new policy made all my friends cry  Grin
the purpose is good, which is reducing waste posts that only aim to add activity
now, we must be more useful and valuable to everyone
write replies not only by hand, but we must use our heads and hearts

Is this one of them?

It seems that as long as we pay to be a Copper member everything will be fine. Can´t understand how this can be considered fair.

Then don't buy it. Earn your merit.

It should be quite easy to get that 1 merit for any Jr.Member on this forum, but when I check some of them who ask others to look their post history it is quite clear how they have one big 0 in received merits. Most of them post in forum boards which are too hard to read because of too many spam, and merit sources do not even visits that parts of the forum.

So in order to get merits that users first need to understand that this forum is have more boards then Bitcoin Discussion or Alternate cryptocurrencies, and also to improve their writing skills. Give something to forum and you will get something back, trust, respect or merits.

In my opinion 1 merit is to low request to become Jr.Member, most of them will find way to get that 1 merit and after that we will have same spam behavior as before. What would really help to this forum is disabling signature until user is reach Member rank, personally I do not see it as a drastic measure but only one that would help to prevent garbage-posting.
Indeed I understood. I was involved in many bounty campaigns, but users who do better posting are more effective in advertising and are also useful for companies.
I have returned to Newbie, but I will make an effort to make better postings in the future.
I think that it is a strict rule revision for many beginners, but I think it is good for improving the overall quality of bitcointalk

How would that be much of a deterrent? Wouldn't that actually be good advertising for someone's merit selling business? I always thought the punishment for selling merit as a merit source would be to get stripped of the privilege and perhaps a ban on the account.
Edit: Now that I think about it though, I guess someone would have to be really bad at covering their tracks in order to have a sufficient case for the staff to implement such measures.  Undecided

I assumed that removal of the merit source privilege is certain if the source is caught selling. I'm saying red trust would be on top of any other penalties so you wouldn't be able to:

Become a merit source -> make some money by selling some merits -> lose the privilege -> carry on as if nothing happened. You'd be labelled as a scammer.

Catching the perp is the hard part, that's true. But so far the known merit sources are fairly established forum members who probably wouldn't risk their reputation for a few bucks, and if they sell more than a few merits the risk of getting caught is greater too. It's a trust issue basically so I hope theymos considers that when deciding whom to appoint and how to allocate sMerits and how to police them.

I suggest to lure them in a thread with the title FREE MERITS HERE!!!! and trap them there.

I'm trying LOL

There should be more merit source to solve this problem. 120 people are definitely not enough to cover the thousands of posts made every day in this forum.

There is no need to review thousands of posts. Most of those are bounty reports, megathread spam, or just spam, and merit sources don't really need to read every post. It depends not so much on the number on sources but on how well they're spread out on various boards and how many merits they actually send out.

Dear Lucius largely agree with you but I want to add that beginners are difficult to obtain merit and there are several reasons :

-On the forum there is a huge number of topics and is very difficult to make a truly unique post
-Among the many garbage topics, it is difficult for beginners to choose the right one-where his message will be noticed and appreciated by merit
-On the forum there are plenty of offers for sale of merit and rank. With this unfortunately no one fights and so beginners choose an easier way.

The introduction of new rules will allow you to deal with garbage accounts and bots in a short time. Only those who were engaged in spam-will find a way to get merit, and will suffer just innocent users.

Already now there is activity in groups on purchase merit and rank, and that means that "business" will flourish for individual personalities.

Many users with a red trust distribute merit "newbie"

Need to develop clear and transparent rules so as not to punish all in a row beginners. Yes, many have not received merit, but that does not mean that they are spammers.

Many social networks also struggle with spam and bots on their platform, but they do not block all users in a row, and if they blocked them by mistake, then communication with the support service solved this problem.

for example, it was possible to limit the registration of new users and track spammers among existing ones

These are just my thoughts and I, like many users who downgraded the rank HONESTLY want to get your first merit.

If you ever catch me meriting an obvious shitpost, then you might be justified in thinking I took some money for merit--and yes, I'm aware that I got some blowback for meriting a gif yesterday, but my excuse is that I just woke up and had yet to drink coffee.  That picture also perfectly encapsulated my feelings about this new change.

I've had plenty of merit to give out since the beginning, and I haven't even had an offer from anyone to buy any--but hopefully that's because they know they'd get exposed and tagged.

I'm wondering where the merit is being sold and to what extent it happens.  Telegram isn't my thing, but has anyone heard about sales being offered there (or anywhere else)?  I thought I read about some groups that deal with the forum on Telegram or something.  Could be wrong.  In any case, I trust Theymos's judgement in his selection of merit sources.  I'm sure abuse has or will happen, but there's not much anyone can do to prevent it.

Pick a topic that you're knowledgeable in or at least want to learn. Engage in discussions and offer facts or opinions. The problem with spamming noobs (I mean real people with at least some interest in the forum and not the bounty-hunting bot/zombie army) is that they fire a bunch of posts vaguely (if at all) related to the thread title without reading anything and without responding to anything in particular. That's how spam megathreads happen. Don't do that.

-On the forum there are plenty of offers for sale of merit and rank. With this unfortunately no one fights and so beginners choose an easier way.

Then be the one to fight it, expose merit sellers/buyers. You might even earn some merits for that.

I got some blowback for meriting a gif

I read that wrong (very wrong) initially, probably need some coffee too Grin

Due to excessive garbage-posting, you now need 1 merit to be a Jr Member. All existing Jr Members who didn't meet the requirement were demoted. Also, newbies can no longer set any signature or personal text.

Note that this does not affect:
 - PM rate-limiting, which is based purely on activity & whitelisted status.
 - "You must wait ___ seconds...", which is based purely on activity & whitelisted status.

But it does affect:
 - Voting in polls
 - Patroller jurisdiction
 - The "ignore newbie PMs" option.
 - "The body is omitted from this email because the sender is a newbie."
 - BBCode limits
 - Reduced-accuracy link filtering
 - Board restrictions

Many of these limitations can be eliminated with a copper membership. In particular, you can set a signature at Member level if you wear a copper membership.

One reason that I was hesitant to do this before is that there are an awful lot of newbie restrictions, and I don't want the forum to be unwelcoming to good newbies. I'll think about tying some of those to activity instead of rank in the future.

With help from DdmrDdmr, I just added 36 new merit sources, which should help newbies achieve the requirement. But if you're incapable of posting anything worthwhile, then you will never rank up, and you shouldn't: this isn't the forum for you.

an extraordinary policy for the advancement of cryptocurrency even though I was a little disappointed because I was reduced to being a newbie again but I respectfully openly and tried to obey the rules. good work for administrators

Some, myself included are active.  I seldom post on bounty threads but i haven't received any merits.  Now if i were to lose a hard earned merit, it would be incredibly painful lol.
But you got nothing to lose mate ever since the merit system got implemented. Don't you want to prove yourself that you're worthy of your rank? Since there is an increase of merit sources, the chance of you receiving merit also increases.

Wow, just by browsing this thread, you can see possible abusers of the system.

trantamhy received his/her first ever merit with this post. And when browsing his/her post history makes you see this user is not worthy of it, 90% of the posts were social media bounty reports.

And the merit came from withlove99 who got an eye-popping 10 merits from this post. Also this user spams bounty reports.

Quite amazing.

I'd probably recommend an increase of more than just 1 merit (due to abusers as mentioned above), but I'm glad to see at least further requirements of merit for levelling up.

If users aren't willing to even try and get 1 merit point, they shouldn't be on this forum.
Glad to hear Theymos, hopefully this does something to help w/ spam. Thanks!

This.  I feel like by simply raising this limit to 3 your going to make it immensely more difficult on the spam for cash poster.  Hell even the worst of the worst poster can get lucky with a single post and a generous merit giver.  They may try post after post trying to get that 1 merit.  Needing 1 gives you hope.  Needing 3 gives you butt hurt.  I really hope the leadership will consider this.

At the moment, I also thought so and it is better to ban the creation of topics altogether until a certain rank or number of merits is reached

Can "age" of the bitcointalk account be also considered as a factor since all the bot and spam accounts are freshly created and usually ends up in a ban,Whereas as the previous jr members(now newbies) who are members of this forum for quite some time but may have not been posting quality posts but also at the same time aren't spamming, shouldn't be severely restricted by being demoted to newbie.Just my opinion. It is very good that the number of sources of merit has increased.
By the way, usually, people say that in order to get merit, you need to write useful, quality posts. However, I noticed that many quality posts do not receive any merit, due to the fact that members of the forum have no merit, which they can give.

What would be the solution to quality posts receiving merits since there is a bit of subjectivity involved in determining what is a quality post?

I have seen some posters attempt to highlight quality posts by responding to them, and saying that they would merit the post, but that they do not have any merits, and sometimes that will inspire someone else to merit the post.

It seems to me that sometimes you can quote a quality post, and you can point out what makes that post a quality post, which might not only cause the original post to receive a merit, but also might cause your recognition post to receive a merit (while you are contributing value to the forum).

By the way, I have sen some posts that are quite complicated and they quote others and they even provide links, but sometimes I feel way too busy to read the post in detail and disinclined to click on the enclosed links - any newer member could increase his/her likelihood of receiving merits by reading the post and links, quoting it, and summarizing what is great or not so great about the post.  Frequently members will find those kinds of discussions to be valuable and sometimes inspire members to spend some of their smerits.

Personally, my opinion about the newbies is this: Prevent newcomers from creating topics. Comments and messages remain unchanged. Sometimes beginners create seemingly good themes, but they are not trusted, since they are newcomers. A newbie can create threads only if he bought a copper member

I understand that the subjective views of members vary, and personally, I found the substance of what you are saying, above, to be merit worthy.  However, I don't personally merit posts that attempt to stand out by using ALL CAPS throughout the text, BOLD and change of color... unless you are trying to be funny, and the humor strikes me.

Others might differ, but it seems to me that you are weeding out some potential merit when you distract from your substance and post in such a seemingly attention seeking kind of way, that is not made in an attempted humor context (like by below post, for example ... hahahahahahaha).
