I think the countries there are not enough to use Bitcoin as a major currency. I know that their country is struggling but making money on the Crypto market is a very difficult thing. Because if the investors do not have much money, they will become whale prey. it's true.

Africa as a good place for crypto? Yes it would. Africa is a continent where some countries are ready to embrace good things. Ofcourse, banks are there to oppose certain things which are likely to pose their businesses to threat. Once africans realize crypto will fetch them money, they will quickly embrace it and work into crypto. However, in an instance where the money is keeping them to wait longer, trust me they will back off. Crypto will be good in Africa but the issue of patient can be a challenge.

I think I differ slightly on this stand. Africa might be a bit backwards in terms of the literacy levels, but it's still not left far behind in terms of technology and advancements. There seems to be a lot of focus on the cryptocurrencies which are the offshoots of the blockchain technology, this governments of these African countries and other developed countries for that matter are against.

But the blockchain techonology is gradually finding it's way into the reins of these countries. A country like Nigeria, where corruption is widespread, the country's Customs Agency is considering the application of blockchain technology in collection of imports duties, et al.

So I won't be quick to right off Africa as a hub. There's significant progress made and with time, there will be more adoption around here. A lot of people are involved in crypto in these countries despite their government frowning at it, and the numbers are increasing

Since I don't really follow world news, I wasn't aware of the M-pesa thing in Kenya, so that was an interesting read (even though I despise CNN). 

I do agree that many countries have problems that won't be solved--or even helped--by bitcoin.  And you've got to ask yourself how a crypto as volatile as bitcoin is can help anyone living in poverty.  Sure, there are individuals in Africa and other impoverished areas of the world doing jobs like signature campaigns and the like, but I don't think any of them would choose to hold bitcoin over their local currency--unless they're doing it strictly as an investment.  For the average African, I don't think that's going to be the case (though I could be wrong).

Keep in mind that bitcoin isn't even 10 years old.  For a form of money, that's pretty young and it takes time for something as unique as crypto to gain acceptance--and even in the 3.5 years I've been into it, I've already seen advances as far as new merchants accepting it and an increase in popularity in countries like the Philippines.  With Africa, I'm sure it'll happen eventually.  I just don't think it's their priority right now.

I'm all for promoting the use of Bitcoin in developing countries too, and where there are suitable as alternatives, all the better, but they (Bitcoin and others or say blockchain) are not the all-encompassing solution.

Myself, coming from a state where my people only just broke the 50% literacy rate in 2017, I can't agree more that we still need to tackle the roots of whatever issues are facing these economies first. Blockchain is not the answer to everything, and shouldn't blind us to root problems of education and other inequalities.

I would say no, simply because there are lots of countries in Africa that still haven't adopted good education and not even a lot of people out there have access to the internet. M-pesa is a different thing, and though digital wallets made life better for some Africans, there aren't any assurances that bitcoin would do the same for them. Some people look at bitcoin as some sort of miraculous tool to lift people from poverty, which simply is not the case. Perhaps they might have a shot at using services that were exclusive for the banked people but that's just it (at least in the way I see it).

As much as I find the last statement you make here pretty crude, it's in a sense true. Niger itself has a 19.1% literacy rate. 1 in 5 people are considered literate. I wouldn't be surprised if this is tied to the fact that the country is not as urban as it can be -- there might be a lot of people living in villages.

If that's the case (that many countries have a lot of village life), how can we expect them to grasp the concept of BTC? Urbanization takes time, and it's likely that there are some villages that don't use any technology and use food and grain as currency instead. Maybe some of the more urban areas in Africa could adopt crypto, but I don't think it's the best place crypto could be housed at.

Just like any other country, it is not easy to accept crypto to be part of their real currency because of the conflict of financing in the nation. Africa may not be a rich country but they could still be a good place for cryptocurrency.

Though some parts of Africa suffering from difficulties in their daily lives they may use to welcome bitcoin and altcoin as their money and for other transactions it might be useful to them to have a certain finances for their life. Africa is not a country mate, it is a continent and there are about 57 countries or thereabout in this part of the world. Some research was conducted by world bank and it was discovered that about 47% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa, lived on $1.90 a day or less. Although, it was discovered as well that the Youth literacy rate has increased over the years and it is about 70% if I recall right and that is a good start.

However, we still have to understand that access to cryptocurrency can only be possible if there is an access to Internet or other basic facilities which is unavailable to people in most part of Africa. Although, I can say that some of the developing parts with access to technology may be doing well, but if we are to compare to the total population of Africa, there would be some limitations and barriers to most part of the population and that is going to be a challenge to adoption in the most of Africa.

I think there was something in the news couple years ago how someone from another country constantly sent a poor african person bitcoins via sms and he cashed it out via a store and that's how he was keeping alive, the person who sent money sent only couple bucks every once in a while whereas couple bucks once in a while was enough to just help that person to survive.

Bitcoin can not only help people in africa insanely with the improved technology and the helping out the reach to other countries and getting the payments easily for working online (think of africa being like a new india where tech helps the people out a lot) but also could help everyday regular people help the africans directly without putting any middleman in between which is an amazing achievement if you think about it. I think for African countries this is a good opportunity to get closer to developed countries in the future. If we imagine that cryptocurrency will replace fiat money, and there will be a large number of bitcoins or other cryptocurrency on the African continent, then the standard of living of people in these countries should in one way or another be much higher than now. In some area in some countries in the African continent, some people might have benefitted from crypto.

However, for example, like people who live nearby Lake Victoria, they live without toilets to use. They just defecate directly in the lake, so that they always suffered from severe problems like water pollution, which brings the locals a higher chance of getting ill.

As far as I know, the population of the african continent is growing very rapidly. In 10 years a lot of people will live in Africa. Yes, the overall level of literacy is low, but the active and rich highly educated individuals can invest in the crypto exchange markets enough their capitals, so I do not consider this factor an obstacle.

By the way, in some african countries people can buy crypto currencies in order to preserve their money from the hyper inflation of local fiat currencies.

I pay attention to towns and cities in these countries. For example, South Africa currently seems to be a country with an attractive investment climate.

What are you talking about? Just look at Zimbabwe as an example, before you make statements like this. Excessive printing of money caused much of the hyperinflation in that country and many of the people there, used Bitcoin to protect the value of their wealth.

Africa is sure a good place for a real life case of cryptocurrency but we have to understand that just very few countries in Africa can have access to this and even have the technology to be able to have access to it.

A lot of the African countries have a higher population of those who are not even learned enough to understand what a PC is, let alone get to want to try their hands on cryptocurrency and this would most definitely be a huge challenge as far as I am concerned, for the space to develop pretty fast within this region. However, looking at the way things have been in this part of the world, it would really be a good use case.

Well, maybe you are saying that for some part of Africa, but if we really want to look at the percentage of those who are actually friendly compared to other potential ones who does not even have a single clue or cannot have a single clue at all due to technology barrier or even schooled enough to understand anything at all, how do you want to place these ones?

I have been to some parts of Africa though, and I must say though that I was amazed at the rate at which cryptocurrency is gradually making some waves in some part of this continent, at least South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe has shown people who are really tired of their inflated system and just need a bail out and this seems like it for them. But one thing is you cannot have a bail out unless you know what it even is, and a lot of those in the less developed areas do not have access.

I think I differ slightly on this stand. Africa might be a bit backwards in terms of the literacy levels, but it's still not left far behind in terms of technology and advancements. As far as I know, the population of the african continent is growing very rapidly. In 10 years a lot of people will live in Africa. From South Africa to Eastern African we have been hearing how businesses are adopting bitcoin and I believe that the only way African can come out of the current economy hardship is to adopt cryptocurrencies and bitcoin.

I think for African countries this is a good opportunity to get closer to developed countries in the future. I think it is very difficult with natural and geographical conditions not supportive, crypto currencies can be used 100% because of the internet. So with the internet conditions that are still scarce and the level of intellectual society that is still lacking, it is certainly difficult for the crypto currency to develop. You are right Africa as a continent need high level of education at the moment the level of poverty and underdevelopment in Africa is at alarming stage and at that only few members of that continent can access and use devices which are require for the smooth operation of bitcoin and cryptocurrency entirely. True that we have curiosity for learning about new things but the problem here is the illiteracy level of our law enforcement(police and EFCC) here in Nigeria.
Two months ago, the EFCC (Economic Financial Crime Commission) were arresting people with crypto wallets apps on their phones, especially the youths. I was so scared of going outside during that period because once you get arrested, you will be asked to pay 50k (over 150$ as a bail). This is still happening in some parts in the south west.

Africa doesn't just need any other cryptocurrency out there, Africa needs a stable and dependable medium of exchange. Africa is a continent where governments still fall via coups and ''revolutions'' as in the case of the recent Arab Spring wave and the November 2017 coup against Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Corruption and civil disorder is still rampant and is one of the key barriers to development. Economic Stability in Africa is an oasis enjoyed by a few countries. Currencies have been known to lose value in a whiff and people’s savings wiped in the wink of an eye.

Africa is one of the continents with high economic growth besides Asia. With stable economic growth, I think Africa can be a good market for the development of the cryptocurrency market and I think many African citizens are already involved in the cryptocurrency market

1)Uninterrupted power supply: This is a major issue in many African countries. Irregular power supply will affect access to Internet. Personally I know how much I spend on gasoline daily just to enable me come online to trade, and do other stuffs.
2) Proper sensitization: For crypto to be accepted and adopted in Africa, proper sensitization must be carried out. I am generalizing here, but many African countries have crap governments where there is loads of corruption, some countries have hyperinflation, some have really high unemployment, and generally it is not a great situation for many people. Now while not everyone could afford the luxury of a smart phone, and mobile data, many can, and many share these resources with friends and family. Lots of Africans are very interested in bitcoin, but unfortunately there is also loads of scammers who are taking advantage of this willingness to find out information from African people. Though exactly not sure how is the country situation and how much spend the people can do it, their infrastructure, their education and literacy etc will also determine how well the people can get used to it and government can plan to implement in coming years. Places with low income and wealth are going to be less likely to adopt crypto as a currency anyway, as the volatility of crypto is a much bigger risk to those with limited means than those living in more advanced economies. Many countries in the development process need more food, health care, and education. Most people are not trained to be technology engineers and they need skilled workers in their economies.
