The real purpose of holding long term is to hold long term and only sell for profits or when it is obvious that the project might really be dead for good.
If at all you want to cut your losses on any project and move on, I believe selling half or one third of such holdings is ideal.
Now you must learn and hopefully you don't make the error again

When investing in any project, you have to believe in the project and be ready to HODL for long-term, but if by any chance you find the coins to not be as promising as you taught and you want to move from it. It is advisable that you don't sell off all the coins at least you should retain one third of it for unforeseen success.

You fell a victim of FOMO and weak hand on this experience. Holding long term has to come with a determination to hold even in a bad market period and you should not always respond to every compulsive urge to sell for another token or coin that looks like it's pumping. If you do that, you will most likely be at loss at the end of the trade.

I think its happen to most cryptocurrency investor. People who selling their coin in early 2018 is people who gain big profits. But i not too worry holding my coin for long term because i am believe cryptocurrency market will recover and market cap value will reach trillion dollar

So after the bearish market came I've been holding more alts than BTC/ETH Coins like COSS, NANO, CND and etc I been making loss and missing out most of the pump because i sell these coins and convert it to ICON (ICX) which i waited it to be move So basically after everytime i sold my specific alts, few days later it went 100%  NANO, bought at 0.011 ETH i sold at 0.005 ETH, 7 days later, it went up to 0.013 ETH. Hold for almost 6 months and sold, it went up after 7 days. Same to NANO, COSS Everytime i sold, within days to 1/2 week It pumped like crazy Just like COSS Sold off 100k at 28 ETH last week Today 100k COSS priced at 53 ETH Holy i been making huge losses in 2018    Indeed, during 2018 is the worst time for every crypto holder or trader. I'm also feel that myself, during that day i can't sell any of my coins cause the price is so much low that i would have loss if i sell them that time. |

Even though i don't do so much trading, but i'm also getting the effect of the market condition. I got loss so many value on the coins that i kept. That way i will stay to keep them until someday it will rise again, so that many people will also able to feel the good time again if the altcoins increase it's value again.
