Just a thought about voting ...

First of all, I did not make my mind so far about what to vote. But it does not matter, since I do not find blocks.  Tongue
I leave this to the ones that actually find blocks.

One of the issues with high voting could be the following:

When 1gh pool started, they had in the minerd command line -v 1024. Many jumped in at that time. So, I suppose that many continue voting for 1024 without looking back. In the mean time, 1gh altered it and now proposes -v 512, but I think that most of the people still run on their initial minerd configuration.

EDIT: Example ...

Blocks 3586 till 3590. All found by 1gh, all voted for 1024.

An optimized cpuminer just commited to https://github.com/1gh/cpuminer-heavycoin , ~20% faster. No binaries yet.
Is there someone who have win64 compiled version?

the way i see voting is the availability of coins being the major factor. I mean there is no difference in having 2x$5 notes or one $10 note. but the quicker coins go into circulation then the cheaper they are because availability might outstrip demand. This on the other hand is countered the fact that psychologically people are happier being able to mine more and this in turn spikes interest getting more people mining and increasing the difficulty faster. So it's an interesting one and the main factors I see which will drive price on with this coin is a) the cpu only factor and b) the voting system, this uniqueness only means good things so regardless of the mint rate I would chill and smoke a cigar because this coin is going places.

... and now, reward moved from 657 to 861. But also difficulty is >75.

when I see everyone in the top 100 with rates between 2 mhz & 80 mhz on 1gh, I'm kinda worried, it almost looks like there's a secret GPU miner  Grin

GPU miner is impossible with the HVC core, check this page http://heavycoin.github.io/about.html#cpu-only for details

Some people have a lot of merged CPU hash power. it looks insane, yes. but they do.. the top 100 are people with a lot of CPU power.

I assure you that GPU miner is definitely possible with HVC. The sooner it's created and made public the better for this coin. Really, reworking HEFTY1 to remove conditional branches is a child's play. This coin being cpu-only is a pure marketing bs, don't believe it.

If creators of this coin are so sure that it can't be efficiently mined with GPU I'd be happy to prove them wrong for a nice generous bounty. Cool

prove them wrong then, create a gpu miner for this coin. seriously I will believe it when I see it but so many people say that the code is easy to get around for gpu mining but nobody has the answer to back up their statements, until someone backs it up then it's a load of hot air. I have found the secret of alchemy, the dark art of turning base metals into gold, see anyone can say something, doesn't make it true though without proof.

It can in North Korea! Wink

But, what if the average is below 640? Will the coin get less than 64 million coins in total?

AAAArrrgh!!!!!!

I transferred all of my coins to my main wallet today; now I tried to move them to mintpal and realized I PW protected the main wallet.

However I made a totally random password written on a piece of paper and threw it away!

I have no way of getting it back... trash is gone. Is there any way to recover the coins/get them out of the wallet?  It's over 18,000 coins.

Thoughts?

uuuh, that sound really bad, good luck! i hope for you that you can recover this pwd ...
searching your paper with the pwd noted is your best way.

I'm not pretty sure, but I think it means that our way to 64 million will be a little longer.

I didn't see anyone react on AnonyMint post (see quote below, original post on page 89), I'm not tech savvy enough in crypto to have a opinion on this, @keccak512 can we have the dev team point of view? Thanks.

Someone private messaged me to check out HeavyCoin.

Sorry I realize this post will make people angry at me. I am usually the messenger who brings technical reality which is usually bad news because most coin developers are not competent.

Innovations and contributions

  • HEFTY1 - a cryptographic hash function for CPU-only proof-of-work with a small memory footprint

Insufficient technical details. From what I read about their claim of SIMD as an issue. I think they fail to understand the nature of the GPU advantage.

  • Ultra-secure hashing - a secure strategy for using multiple cryptographic hash functions

From the Github page:

Quote
Q: Doesn't Quarkcoin already implement multiple cryptographic hash functions?

A: Yes, but without increasing security against collisions. Quarkcoin (and its many clones) actually implement multiple hash functions as a simple chain of function compositions
Quark(x) = ... SKEIN512(KECCAK512( ... BMW512(BLAKE512(x))))

where ... contains additional hash function compositions using JH-512, Keccak-512, BMW-512, BLAKE-512, SKEIN-512 or Grøestl-512, which are randomly selected based on the 4th bit of previous hash outputs.

The problem is that, due to Quarkcoin's simple use of function compositions, if BLAKE512(x) has collisions, then so does BMW512(BLAKE512(x)) and SKEIN512(KECCAK512(... and so on, until we reach Quark(x), which also has collisions. Similarly, if SKEIN-512 or Grøestl-512 have collisions, then so does Quark(x). Simply put, if there's a collision attack or second-preimage attack for BLAKE-512(x), then Quark(x) is cracked.

Bullshit. Changing even one input bit to a hash should randomize all the output bits. Cracking any combinations of the hashes in the chain of hashes does not increase the risk of collisions for those in the chain that were not cracked.

This kind of silly mistake proves the developers are technically incompetent.

Whereas their "improvement" is worse in the sense that it takes 3 cracks to make it very insecure and 2 cracks to make it perhaps insecure, whereas with Quark it takes 4 cracks.

Quote
Q: How does Heavycoin implement multiple cryptographic hash functions?

A: Heavycoin takes 64 bits from the output of each of 4 well-known cryptographic hash functions (SHA-256, Keccak-512, Grøestl-512 and BLAKE-512) and interleaves these bits into a combined 256-bit hash that is more resistant against collisions and second-preimage attacks.

Hope you realize that 2^64 is crackable with a server farm. If 3 of the 4 are cracked, then the 4th is useless in Heavy's design.

  • Temporal Retargeting - multipool protection that goes beyond Kimoto Gravity Well
  • Decentralized Block Reward Voting - the mining schedule and money supply are democratically decided (total supply is still bounded to 128M)

Oh great let the early investors decide to make coins even more rare. This will be a very good experiment to show why democracy is a power vacuum.  Wink

Any ideas on why I receive an error below when running the run_miner.sh on ubuntu 12.04 (the miner is the latest beta2 version from heavycoinpool.com).
