I like your idea and it is a very brilliant and futuristic one. My choice will definitely be the established coins that you are sure won't disappear because you won't be available to monitor them. For example, a mixture of ETH and ltc. I would have suggested bitcoin but it won't be all good to put down your $1000 on a fraction of bitcoin.

However, more importantly, remember you are going to the army and you are going to stay for one year @ least, I suggest you also allow someone you trust or next of kin to have access to your security code, 2FA or passphrase, just in case anything happens.

I would suggest keeping it at bitcoin. I mean I know it won't be this big home slam of a return and you won't get like x10 of your money in a year but at least in 15 months we can be sure that bitcoin will be going up a bit. Even ethereum could do something like that if you want, that is big enough as well.

The reason why I am not suggesting any smaller altcoins is that even tough there is a chance that you could make a ton of money with them there is also a chance they could go to zero as well, we have seen plenty of horrible coins that basically turned out to be failures. Yeah there are really good ones like cardano and iota and whatever but do you really want to take the chance? I think bitcoin is as decentralized as it gets and could not be ruined by some people so I still suggest that.

If I am to advise you on the coin to invest in since this is still the best bet now for future investment, I will advise you get Bitcoin with the while money now while you still can, at least you will be able to buy one third of a BTC which is more than enough to make you a fortune after your retirement but if you feel that the coin is too expensive to buy.

This is a veRyan sounds advice you are seeking and I think there are many coins out there that are going to perform very well in some years to come.  One of those coins I believe is BNB.  binance coins has done wonderfully well for some days now and I believe that it is good if you can buy some units of binance and hold for the next one year.  I also recommend you buy EOS as is one of the good cryptocurrencies and it is also doing well currently.

You can actually having good investment in crypto and can be trusted for being profitable. You don't need to spend much time searching for potential coins in the market just choose BTC and ETH and everything will be fined. I will give you best suggestion, to buy bitcoin and it is very good time to invest on bitcoin, because of bitcoin is in low price and hold it for a year, i give you guaranty that in the end of the year, your $1000 will be double. 1 year not bad for your investment according to the markets of the year. We know 2018 was not a crypto year. So, I think 2019 could you help you to get some profit but not more. If you hold 2020-2021 then you would get honourable bitcoin price (not recommend the only opinion).
