An email exchange with someone at CryptoNote that might help others clear up some details...

I was hoping to hear more details about the developers of ByteCoin. There are rumors and fear being spread around online saying that basically 80% of the ByteCoins were ninja-mined from 2012 up until BCN's recent "public release". I can confirm on the blockchain that 83% of the coins are mined already, but I was wondering if CryptoNote had any historical information or more details about working with ByteCoin devs? Who and how many people actually mined these 154 billion coins?

A thousand users at least? And why was the mining difficulty stagnant for two years?

How do you want me to verify this?  I'm not some sort of fucking troll that spends all my time on this forum.  I was just sharing information that I personally received via email (contact@cryptonote.com).

Thanks Burnbabyburn71. Much appreciated. Seem to have missed most of the blog so didn't even see this page.....with the Cryptonote announcement. Doh! I have only been with Cryptonote for 2 days! I liked their platform and am very sad they closed. I hadn't had a chance to withdraw anything so did not know the procedure. This is all a huge learning curve, so all good in the end. Even though the btc I had was pittance it still hurts after being ripped off my a miner.....guess I am not the first and prolly won't be the last    I am downloading the bytecoin wallet now so hope I can sail through setting it up. It is a hefty file and will take awhile as my wifi strength can be temperamental. If I have any issues I might have to come back for some advice. Hope you don't mind. Cheers mate!

I have BCN at Poloniex too BBB71. The excellent price is another reason I am sad about cryptonote closing. I am trying to work out which exchange to go to now as I would like to be in more than one. I have been making comparisons using this site http://bitinfocharts.com/markets/ However this only gives you the current buy and sell prices and does not give you the fee structure of each Xchange. The bytecoin webpage stated that one could download a bcn wallet on coinex, however this Xchange is in beta so not sure about that one. Besides the link on bytecoin for the coinex wallet didn't work for me. Would be good to hear from others about different exchanges for bcn. I have been looking at bittrex or mintpal and will take a look at cryptsy. Bter has been recommended from another chat.

You can (and should) download the Bytecoin wallet from the official page.
I don't know what are you talking about here but BCN is only traded at Poloniex and Swaphole at the moment.
Keep in mind that BCN (and it's forks) doesn't use the Bitcoin code base and thus integrating it into an exchange is a lot more work than the usual alt coin.

And follow the instructions. There is no GUI and running the software requires at least 4Gb or RAM, so be warned.

And remember : Don't keep your coins on exchanges. Exchanges get hacked, bankrupt, flee, scam, disappear, ...

Just go to the exchange trade and return your funds to your own wallet.

I'm thinking about mining BCN on a shitty laptop. Good idea or no?

I'm mining BCN on a couple shitty laptops myself.

How do you do that? I tried to do some pool mining on bcn.extremepool.org using mining_proxy and minerd, in order to avoid high memory requirements and 64Bit requirement. But I did not succeed at all. Probably also here is 64 Bit needed? What line you are using  for mining-proxy? Or are you using http-protocol? I tried this but got some "16-bit-dos" error... Laptop is "Centrino Duo", OS is WinXP.

Not sure, my laptops just run windows 7 home premium 32bit and I just use the 32bit GUI miner from MinerGate. Since you use WinXP you won't be able to do that. So I'm really not sure, sorry.

I can install and start the MinerGate-Miner v2.0, then logging in is possible without problems. But then: How to start it? Clicking on Start-button doesn´t do anything. It only says "Hashrate: not mining, Shares Difficulty: none, Confirmed Balance: updating". Do I have to wait now for some hours, or are there some settings which I missed?

Edit: It´s solved. I closed it and opened it again, then it suddenly worked. I don´t know if it´s because I closed and then opened again, or because I really needed to wait some minutes. Now I have about 20H/s...

Yes, I got it to work and mined allready above 500 BCN...

But I really wish I could do some mining with computers which are running winXP, or Linux32 bit. If this coin succeeds, the hardware Industry will smile. Anyways, I´m in business for now. :-)

I searched most of the morning looking for the genuine link and a wallet download that I could follow. The bytecoin webpage I found looked nothing like this. Sadly I am still lost as I don't know how to unpack and run one file before the other, so guess I am stuffed. I have bytecoin on cryptonote where I traded it. They have shutdown and I am unable to convert it to btc which would have been easy.....thanks for the link, anyway. There are two cryptocoins with the same name Bytecoin (BTE) which is a bitcoin clone, and this thread's Bytecoin (BCN) which is not a Bitcoin clone but a Cryptonote implementation.

Many people here can help you, just follow the step by step in the webpage and ask here when you get stuck.
Another possibility is trade your Bytecoins off-chain, there is a trading thread somewhere, so you can sell them and send them to the address of the buyer.

 Cryptrol Thanks for the clarification as I did wonder why there was the BTE and BCN. I have downloaded that file off of sourceforge which I know is a trustworthy site. What bothers me is why this mega sync was 1.6 gbs and took hours to download. I have run the bytcoind.exe and then run simple wallet but after I entered the password and pressed enter it disappeared, so I ran it again and didn't press enter so it is just sitting there. Not sure what I am to do with that file? The bitcoind.exe has stopped synchronising at 687 days. Not sure what to do there now either? should I just start again?

yes, it is that slow. it will never be widely adopted until this is solved, and this problem will affect all CN coins as blockchain gets bigger.

yes, it is that slow. it will never be widely adopted until this is solved, and this problem will affect all CN coins as blockchain gets bigger.

This problem has been discussed and is being worked on. The Bytecoini devs have agree that it is indeed a problem and said they will be working the issue. The Monero guys are also coming up with a way to mimin how Bitcoin stores hits block chain by using databases and such.
