Banning in bitcoin's ecosystem is really nearly impossible. You are right with your point that bitcoin is an opensource platform and it is not made to be regulated and is the user's choice and risk to use it.

Chinese government can't stop bitcoin to be honest, there's a lot of OTC buying and I'm sure that trading underground will also occurs once they really put the ban hammer.

So it's really up to where we decided to live, if you are somewhat in a government wherein they have a hard stance, chances are, you might want to migrate to other nations wherein crypto is regulated.

I think people are afraid of the negative impact that such decision will cause in their country.

The perception that the general public has over Bitcoin will change dramatically if a govt decides to ban bitcoin, they'll see bitcoin as something illegal, anyone associated with it will be seen as a "criminal" (the masses can sometimes overreact), if you get caught using it (buy/sell stuff with btc, converting to fiat, etc), you're gonna face serious consequences like fines or something more severe (obviously, depending on how strict the ban is).

Adoption in that country will most likely stop, no one will accept btc as a alternative payment method (not legally), you won't be able to trade it as exchanges will probably shut down, you're left with something that can act as a store of value, which is great, but you won't be able to use it freely, anyone who wants to get involved with btc in a country where is banned will have to do it secretly, in the underworld, not that cool tbh.

Banning means officially forbidding to use it. They surely can do that, in my opinion. What they cannot do is, as was mentioned by some other members as well, prevent people from actually using it. In my country one social network is banned, but some people still use it. Russia not only banned but even tried to block telegram, but it wasn't effective.
Bans are still important, though, because not everyone is okay with facing penalties or even simply breaking the laws. If bitcoin were banned under death penalty, would you still use it? And what if the penalty was a big fine? The stricter the penalty, the less people will use it. For the community to thrive, we need it to be legal.

They can't enforce a ban effectively, but they can certainly hamper adoption. If a government officially prohibited its usage/ownership, I'm sure that driving it underground into the black market would hamper usage and adoption there. They could never really stop people -- we have encryption and there are simply too many of us. But you might be surprised how many people would fall in line if the government said so. I also think running mining operations at any real scale would be problematic under prohibition in that situation.

Actually, Bitcoin is being traced, that is why centralized exchange wanting KYC, and that is the reason ant blockchain analysis companies exist. Bitcoin natures are a pseudonym. Right now, we need to put some extra effort to gain full privacy and anonymous using currency. At least, until the technologies somehow 'significantly improved'.

In other hands, I'd agree with @mjglqw and @squatter, Thanks to decentralized and open sources nature of Bitcoin, the network and the system can't be manipulated with any centralized entities, but it comes to other problems, we are as a community would definitely lag behind if the adoption process is being slowed down and prohibited by government.

Srsly, with that kind of logic one could argue that you can't ban anything, and you can even trivially conclude that since crimes are illegal, yet people still commit them, then laws are useless. But the point of any ban is to deter usage, so bans should be judged by how effectively they deter when compared to no ban. An economic system like Bitcoin's, which relies on free markets would be seriously crippled if people wouldn't be able to easily exchange their coins and discover the price. A share of criminal usage will rise from today's 1% because law-abiding citizens wouldn't want to risk doing anything with BTC.

Well, technically speaking, they could start to target the IPs of network nodes and have those as blanket-banned, however, it would be a difficult process and trying to shut down a series of changing IPs simply wouldn't be sustainable for the government to do, even if there were multiple governments involved. Not to mention that it would be a good eye-opener for a lot of people when they see that governments try so hard to shut it down. There are some weak points within the network at large, however, because it is open-source there's nothing that can really be done aside from large attempts to censor it, as I mentioned.

China hasn't found a good way to ban Bitcoin yet, assuming they're trying to, and they're trying for the thousand-cuts approach based on the (maybe FUD) news I hear coming out of the country. If China can't ban it, I don't think many countries will even try to.

I think we are talking about two different things here.
Bitcoin can't be banned as a technology because you can't prevent people for using it, it's available for everyone. But the other thing is that governments could put the use of Bitcoin out of the law so that it becomes illegal. So, basicly you could always use Bitcoin because all technologies, sofwares and devices are available to you but you will be doing it on illegal way if some governments adopts the law against Bitcoin.

Please provide a source to your claims regarding Chinese Government banning Bitcoin. Speculations with no evidence are just false accusations which are not needed in the crypto ecosystem.  I have seen this speculation but no one has provided any evidence to back this claim.
There is not way the government can stop people from using Bitcoin even if they ban it usage in the country.  You can be in any country and still trade your Bitcoin for fiat money easily.

I am agree with you. Bitcoin network depend on internet. If government want to ban bitcoin, government should shutdown the internet and i think its impossible for government. Of course, we already know that technically speaking no country can ban Bitcoin, but they can regulate measures where the use, distribution and conversion of Bitcoin to cash can be so hard that people are discourage of joining the Bitcoin bandwagon. And we know that these countries have dictatorial governments where those in power are exercising higher degree of control on the lives of the people as compared to what many people take for granted in the West. I for one will not be risking my safety and that of my family just for the sake of having a Bitcoin -- that is not worth it all. However, we should really note that Bitcoin can do well even without those countries not friendly with it. We have seen it after China banned Bitcoin...it is still here alive, kicking and is about to be making many pumps towards the end of 2019.

I believe that the concept of "banning" people are afraid of is if their government would declare a law or something that prohibits banks, within their country, from exchanging Bitcoin  or any cryptocurrency to fiat. Yes, they are controlling their people to prevent them from achieving their freedom. Bitcoin can't be banned but the government can ban any cryptosite that can totally prevent its people from transacting. Government consider this as a blackmarket, we must still be careful and don't be too confident. I think I've seen this topic before but anyway. It's would be tough for bitcoin to be controlled by anyone or to be banned rather. There is no such thing as banned when we talk about a decentralized asset even though governments has already implemented regulations on our local exchanges but still having good performance. I don't think if Bitcoin will be banned because of it's feature. Bitcoin can be used in either trading or holding it can even be used as payment method so why do they ban it? Definitely, you're correct, it is really impossible to ban Bitcoin from any countries but I saw some news that the Indian government already banned Bitcoin and their reason is really pathetic, they see Bitcoin as a Ponzi scheme or a scam. That would affect the entire world economy. In other words, to get rid of Bitcoin entirely, you have to get rid of everything else that accounts for a much greater value than Bitcoin is. That's a very bad deal.

But the other thing is that governments could put the use of Bitcoin out of the law so that it becomes illegal. It depends on what the ban actually is. It won't necessarily harm Bitcoin itself, but will certainly harm the rate of adoption, and the flow of money that exchanges still need bank accounts for. The higher the price is, the more secure the Bitcoin network is. It has never been a major problem, but still something to consider taking serious.

Most regulated exchanges are compliant enough to not trigger any unwanted attention from the governments, so there is no need to worry about that. I would even like to say that governments prefer these exchanges to exist and control a large portion of this space, because that means more tax income, less manipulation, and less people wiring money to a foreign exchange.

I agree with you. Why is it impossible to ban bitcoin? Government can say that this currency isn't safe for them and they have to ban it, this proposal and everything is done. But there are a lot of things banned, there are a lot of things illegal, there are jails for them but did it prevent anything? Agreed. Even if the government bans bitcoin in the country, I don’t think its people would stop using or trading bitcoin. Here cryptocurrencies are banned totally. But, it cannot stop people from trading it. Well, who doesn’t if one sees how profitable these can be.  
Also, yes, the decentralized nature of the bitcoin makes it impossible to ban.  But, we can face some problems in the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies.

Many time in the past we commented on the topic like this. It is very difficult to ban cryptocurrency even in the so countries that have restriction to that. Bitcoin for example can be used internationally and that means it is not just a national things. As far as I know, none of the countries have banned the possession of Bitcoin (although there are rumors that India is planning the same). Some of the countries, such as Nepal and Bangladesh have banned the trade of Bitcoin to fiat currency (and vice versa) and they have even arrested some people for breaking the law. But no one has been arrested yet for the possession of Bitcoin.

Bitcoin can be banned and some countries are already done that what you probably mean is that Bitcoin cannot be stopped. The government can impose a prohibition upon using crypto and make punishment who should not abide that law however if people really love this technology, they cannot be stopped due to the fact that they can hide their addresses and identity or simply become anonymous. On a more lighter note, it is definitely impossible to ban something with great value like Bitcoin. At this current stage that a lot of people has invested in Bitcoin, believed in its technology, developed on it and thus proving that for once, payments can be done in a peer-to-peer manner, then it means that the knowledge of Bitcoin has reached far and wide hence the government can't ban it. Another thing to think about is that the only thing that they can ban are the locally available wallets within the country but it is still impossible to fully ban Bitcoin since using Bitcoin is a profit to some local companies. I have already posted a different opinion in this thread and I would stick with it that states that banning has no idea, they claim that bitcoin is the underground currency, so if you ban it what will change? Nothing, if we follow this accusation. If you make things illegal, people will always find a way to break through it and new method will be hard to catch in future but possible, it's a never-ending cycle.

But right now, a lot of companies implement bitcoin and a lot of them build businesses around it, it's getting stronger day to day, nothing has become so strong and popular in such a short time. Our country experienced before a crisis in bitcoin wherein the government attempted to shut it down because there are plenty of new saying that bitcoin is a huge scam. After a few months, the issue just faded away all of a sudden and it was forgotten by everyone. I think that the author of that article should speak with the Chinese Government since they are now banning bitcoin. We all know that once the Chinese Government moves it's for real. Too bad for Chinese people who use bitcoin and other cryptos, lucky for us since our government thinks the same as the author of this article.

So it's really up to where we decided to live, if you are somewhat in a government wherein they have a hard stance, chances are, you might want to migrate to other nations wherein crypto is regulated.

The only way to completely destroy Bitcoin is to ban internet. Despite of the anonymousity of the owner and the dectralization of the currency, I must say law makers have the capability to ban bitcoin if there will be a powerful man that says to ban it. Laws are written in language that can uderstand by the people and very much likely laws are not going to be written in bits.

Some people are afraid of banning cryptocurrency on their ciuntry because they have sympathy. You are right, but these are not the only reasons why bitcoin is not banned. Despite these, bitcoin is banned in some countries, there are strict ways governments can make sure people do not really make use of bitcoin. But, what I have noticed is that bitcoin is liked by people, and many government officials are even having bitcoin and will do their best not to ban it. What really make bitcoin successful are what you commented that it is decentralized, but also deflationary.

Well, you can't be sure that there will be no chinese people using bitcoin now. Any country could express the ban of bicoin but they could not totally prohibit bitcoiners to find way to make its access. Remember that bitcoin uses p2p network and everyone is part of it. So chinese people could still access bitcoin knowing that they should not be getting caught by their government authorities. Anyway, every countries has priorities now to settle and that bitcoin is lesser compared to other issues being face by so many countries like this pandemic.

Well for one, it is decentrakized, so as long as we are not being run by a one world government, bitcoin is safe. And it's also anonymous, it allows people to use it without their identity being checked, so much so that is even used for illegal purposes like smuggling and drug purchase. As for bytes and bits, there may not be a dedicated kaw for it but certain parameters can be ticked off and on in order to pass a law.
