This just occurred to me : What do you think Cyrus (and remaining community of course) of having a voluntary group within bitcointalk that would make subtitles for the videos? I think that this would actually benefit the reach of the channel mainly because:

• We wouldn't need to have the bad (although it has been worse) automatic caption from Youtube service
• There are a lot of users in the Local Boards that don't interact as much with the rest of the community and I think that a big factor in it is a language barrier (there could be others, of course). I would really like that the channels videos would be inclusive for everyone, especially our local board users.

Just thinking out loud, I think that if we managed to cover English (captioning), French, German, Portuguese and Russian we would have already a huge reach (but still lacking the representation of the other local board sections of course). To have the biggest impact I guess we could try to upload the video already with the most subtitles that we could do so that we are able to reach an higher audience... This isn't to say that we couldn't add more subtitles afterwards, which we should be able to do, it's just a matter of timing I guess.
I don't know what's going to be our average video duration but I think that 10-15 minutes are doable (even though there's a lot of dialogue, even bigger if it's in podcast format). Thing is, with big enough groups we could split a video for each member so as to not overload the others and so on. We could also start by just doing the smaller videos before venturing into larger pieces (such as podcasts I assume). One rule that I see at the moment is that one video should have just one user translating it due to conflicting "interpretation"/grammar being employed.

If there's momentum I can already say that I could provide support within the Portuguese (European) translators*. The idea itself is a bit rough on the edges but for sure it could be improved ...

*Small note: Don't take me wrong here, I don't have any problem joining the Portuguese (Brazilian) team of course, this was just my way of saying that the grammar of the videos that I could eventually do would look different.

EDIT: We could also use this[1] recent analysis as a base (made by Felipe Hoffa) where he analyzed 1M Reddit comments to see which languages were more prevalent (in Reddit). Sure it isn't a huge dataset but it's better than nothing right?

Thats a great idea, you have thought it through Rick.

The content should definitely be viewable in a number of languages and not
relying on youtube's captioning. This should increase the reach of the channel.

I think it's just a matter of word of mouth within the forum and see whoever was interested in doing the captions. Bear in mind that this does take some time (between timing the subs and making the correct translation) so while it may seem something easy at first sight, it does require time and effort to get the end result in a good shape.
In the past I did some tasks related to this kind of nature so I guess I may have some experience already and I could try to help out fellow members if needed. There wouldn't be any need to purchase a specific program to do it since there are awesome free programs within this field.

What I would also envision happening is that we should follow a specific set of rules regarding subtitling - as in a "Golden Standard" of some sort. This ensures that whoever is making the translation (either me or other member) will always follow a specific set of rules that would always lead to a great result. I'm referring to, for example:

• Number of words within a segment being translated - We don't want to just shove a long captioning for the user to read as this will likely distract him from the main video;
• Line break when needed - What would be the correct timing in order to make a 2 line and fill the remaining of the text. Very (very) rarely is that we should go for the 3rd line of text[/b]
• How to do proper dialogue lines - For example but not limited to:
  

  -Hello, how are you?
  -I'm fine what about you?

  Instead of:
  

  -Hello, how are you? - Fine, what about you?

• Duration of the subs before fading - This is also an important aspect that should be balanced with the first pointed aspect of this list

Again, the first couple of subtitles made will take the longest especially for people that never done it, but as the time goes by it will eventually be faster and considering the end result (increase the reach of the videos) I would say that it would be work for the greater good (both of the channel and crypto in general).[/list]

The voting have been closed for some time and we are still expecting first video to be aired soon on the channel despite any disparities between YouTube deleting the comments.The community is still in support and that's essential so give us glimpse of the same soon man .This wait and excitement is becoming normal routine for me.The channel subscribers are slowly pumping to reach 34 at this time.There are lot of crap in the YouTube junkyard and it will take some time for the people to find the gold in that.You know what i mean.So hope the video to be out on any day.

It would certainly help the viewers who aren't proficient in English. I think it's a good idea to keep that as an option for later. Once the first 1 or 2 videos are aired, we will see how many views, comments, and subscribers there are. Based on that, we will get some stats of how the community responds to the work. If the reach is really bad, like 100 or less views within the first couple of weeks (which I am hoping won't be the case), creating subtitles for multiple languages might not make that much sense.

If that is possible, Cyrus would have some info about which regions are mostly watching and he could focus on those languages first if your idea is approved.

Since we're talking about Google and ads - In 2021 Q2 (FY) Google Services (of which Youtube ads and other kind of advertising belong) generated $57,1 billion in revenue[1] and $50,444 billion came straight from advertising - Youtube has a really neat platform called "Youtube Analytics"[2] where you are able to see a lot of information regarding your channel. To directly answer your question I would say that Cyrus could use the information straight from the Audience tab:

• Returning viewers
• Unique viewers
• Subscribers
• Total members (channel level)
• Gender
• Age
• Top geographies
• Top subtitle/CC languages
• Watch time from subscribers
• Other videos your audience watched (channel level)
• Other channels your audience watches (channel level)

Oh right that could be a solution/option as well. When I did a couple of gigs regarding with subtitles/captioning I would do all work - From translation to create the .srt file that would be fed directly to the video meaning that I would also have to work on timing the subs with video source (basically all the workflow regarding with subtitling work). But if the team that Cyrus is running would be willing to sync the subs themselves (which save A LOT of time to us translators) then I guess that the work would reduce greatly in effort (which is good since we could attract more users that way I guess).
The way that I see it working is that we would receive a word file with the phrases on it and them we would translate it to the appropriate language, a bit like this:

I think that this would be a good way of sending the information to whoever is timing the subs so that he/she knows which phrase goes where but I'm sure that someone will also chime their ideas into this. I'm really eager for Cyrus take on it (and, most importantly, the next video announcement which I believe will be his next thread update, fingers crossed!   )

That's very useful. Thanks for sharing that. I expected that they had something like that but I wasn't really sure. Cyrus could check the stats after the release of the first video to see if there is a certain region where a lot of the views come from. Another option could be that at the end of the video he asks the viewers to vote if they would like to see subtitles in their local languages for future videos and for which languages. A link in the video description could be posted to a site where they can cast their votes, for example.

Generating captions in the local languages would definitely have an influence over the audience reach and as per YouTube creator reports the views on video with auto generated captions or synchronized captions are more than on the normal video without captions.But it is time consuming task but the members have volunteered for the same but the video editor needs to sync it with the timing and make changes to it and it would take some more time to add each subtitles for the local languages as there are more than 80 languages globally.

Second if you see the reports we can find out that top countries with most YouTube views are like USA and India followed by Brazil and then other's:



The highest paying audience is also from the USA which means if the targeted audience for the channel came from US it would have great chance of generating more revenue also.But if you see the top country is like USA and India and there is no need for captions to them as most of population understand English but then there are many who doesn't find it suitable to watch without subtitles or best if captions are in local language.The regional views are per this :

So the description could be setup or prepare a summary report after the first episode is published and wait for some days to have an accurate idea about the views count and geographical testing of the video.Then as you said along with it voting option should be given for the local languages.But for that there is need to aware the local community and have reach to them which members could do by promoting the channel in their respective local board so we witness more audience on the channel.Suppose there are only 200-300 views the results or voting will not give correct results as we are targeting global reach.

So we can wait for the first video to be aired and then monitor the growth and collectively make contributions for the channel growth.

That may be true, but it's still an interesting chart that told me something I didn't know, and I appreciate posts like that.

And yet I do wonder what the demographic breakdown is/will be for the bitcointalk channel.  I'm not sure if the trailer is anything to go by, but assuming it is, viewership might be small and those viewers might be concentrated in one or two geographic regions.  Hopefully that won't be the case as new videos are released.

A lot of the crypto videos I see are from the US or Canada, though there do seem to be a lot coming from Asian countries.  I don't watch those since I can't understand the language, but I see them coming up in search results or in the related videos list.  People from all over the world are extremely enthusiastic about bitcoin and all things crypto, and even on this forum we have members from a lot of different countries.  I'm a bit puzzled as to why the trailer video hasn't gotten a massive number of views and that there aren't too many subscribers at present.

It could be because it's a brand-new channel and people aren't yet sure what to expect from it. People usually follow and subscribe to those whose content they like, Bitcointalk still has no content. They have a teaser announcing something that will be released in the future.

Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to consider sponsored Facebook ads, for example. Not sure if YouTube and Twitter offer such packages as well. I keep seeing ads for some scammy Squid token sale all over the place. It might be fun to have them replaced by those of Bitcointalk.

I'm unfamiliar with how Youtube works honestly, is this something that the public can contribute to without having access to the channel in some way? I'm aware of Youtube's automatic captioning service, which can suck a lot of the time, but not familiar with how we would go about submitting captions. I'm guessing you'd need a Google account, submit them, and then they get approved by the channel owner?

I think the initiative is a good one, after all Bitcoin attracts audiences from around the world, with it being a border less currency.

Oh but on positive note, at least we won't have any (public) dislikes on out bitcointalk youtube channels from all the haters...

One suggestion for possible intro video that helps users how to register on bitcointalk forum, but we should include some info for evil fees.

Most probably the answer to this is that the channel owner doesn't allow this feature in the video through which users can contribute to the video in much more engaging manner and simply there is auto gendered captions as we see and can turn them off/on the videos.But if this feature is enabled then the users can contribute to add subtitles for the video in languages available but there is process involved in this.Here is an good answer for the same which i have quoted from the reddit users:

Hi there, you cannot contribute subtitles on all the videos. Only some videos whose creators have enabled contribution have this feature.

Here’s a detailed step by step process:

1) Go to the video that you want to contribute translations or transcriptions to. (Only if this option is available)
2) In the player, select the gear icon (settings button).
3) From the drop-down menu, select
Subtitles/CC > Add subtitles or CC. You can also get there from under the video player by selecting ...More > Add translations.
4) Choose what you want to work on:
a)Closed captions of same language:
i)Select the video's language.
ii)Play the video. When you get to the part where you want to add a caption, type your caption into the box.
iii)Repeat this process for all the audio in the video, then click Submit contribution.

But if this feature is disabled which on most of them is you to have to manually do all the task like writing up the subtitles with the correct timestamp of the video in the notepad and then save it as .txt extension and give it the original channel owner to upload it on the YouTube for public view and here is how to do it : Add captions

It can surely help understand those who are not able to understand English properly and subtitles in the local languages are way more appealing to the audience and it seems that they can understand the terms and content in much better way.

Fuck I didn't see the teaser up until now. And Oh my god, it is actually really done well; its way better than what I had imagined, and has a totally different aura than what bitcointalk as a forum does. I am actually really stoked to see what the channel is going to cover, so cyrus however long it takes, if the videos have similar or even better quality than what the teaser video has, I am SURE the channel will do well.

Fucking insanely good job on the production, the narrator(not sure if it is you or someone else) did really well, the video was really well done. It felt like an actual youtube video that I would normally watch, so GREAT fuckin Job mr.cyrus!

I, however, would suggest that the channel gets advertised more properly in the forum, maybe one of the designated ad-slots that we all see on each thread could have a link to the youtube channel when videos roll by? Also like small giveaways to the communities to keep them involved? omg I actually cant wait for the first proper-proper-proper video to be released.

Ah, another data enthusiast, how cheerful. The best that I can show you - at this will be far long from the capabilities that Youtube Analytics has - is how our channel gained subscribers ever since the launch of it. Here's the breakdown taken from SocialBlade[1](take this data with a grain of salt since I don't know how accurate it is):

Oddly, the peak of our video views was on 28/10/2021 - a Thurdsay - which was something that I wasn't expecting. I guess that it was when most users here saw the updated link and eventually decided to check it out. If the data is somewhat right, at the moment we're having an average of 14 subscribers and 70 video views per week. I assume that if we had the standard deviation its value would be high because most of our views came from the initial days and have plumbed (sadly) ever since the end of October - which is somewhat expectable. I think that the marketing (which has to be well thought) hasn't really started yet.

I'll leave here[2][3] the relevant links for your announcement since I also read that update recently and consider that an interesting read. Nice job pointing that out!
@Welsh : aysg76 already posted some workaround but I don't agree that there should be freedom to any user to add captions to the videos, just for the sake of quality control. I know that probably whoever is running the channel would have to review/approve the caption, but considering that he/she probably doesn't understand the text, chances are that he/she will use google translator/DeepL to see if the text is somewhat ... decent I guess? Besides you hate - as do I - Google lack of respect for privacy so the fact that we don't need to have a Google account to do the service is already a bonus should members decide to do this.

What I think should be done, from my point of view, is that whoever is in charge of translation would either send the raw text for whoever is editing the video - much (believe me) less work involved - OR the user creates the subtitles all by himself - from timing to the actual translation - and sends them in a format (probably .srt) that can simply be loaded straight into the video by the channel owner - by using Youtube Studio[4] for example.
