I was in argument with someone. His view is that people who gamble are those that what they have is not sufficient for them and so they try to make more money from gambling.

This is the thinking of someone who is well on his way to becoming a gambling addict. They just justify every unhealthy gambling habit to that they can make reduce the dangers they are walking into. I think there is a psychological term for this.

He said if you have sufficient money to take care of your needs that you won't think of gambling. He made reference to some rich people, who don't gamble because they have sufficient money to even gift to charity but that those rich who still gamble are only addicted to it not just because of the money. Comparing yourselves to rich people who gamble is like comparing Roger Federer who play golf for money to a rich person who plays golf for fun. Rich people who gamble do not do it because they need money, they do it because that is one of the ways they network with other high-earning individuals.

There are gamblers in every class of society, and although your friends argument that there are people who are gambling majorly for making money, there are also others who are gambling for fun not to make money. This is the problem that results into addiction because some people see gambling as a means to get quick money or they see it as a job. Such people will end up being addicted and wouldn't be able to come out from their addiction because they will be busy chasing their loss and losing the more. Although I understand where this argument is coming from, the truth is that rich people really do gamble a lot, and they even spend more money on gambling than poor people. The reason is because they have the money to spend, and if they luckily win, they want their win to be very huge because any small win is just meaningless to them. Statistically, The rich don't gamble as much as the poor, but the thing is that they spend more than the poor.

In a sense the guy you got into an argument with is right. Some of the driving reasons why the poor gamble is because they see it as a way for them to earn a quick buck. Why do you think sweepstakes and lotteries are so big on the average person, and why don't you see rich people flocking on these lotto outlets to save a ticket and wait for a draw? It's because they knew it's a money trap, and at the same time they know better than to think of gambling as a way for you to earn profits consistently. People who wish to gamble merely on the premises of desperation should be discouraged from gambling at all costs.

With gambling, you cannot make a living wage nor is gambling a get-rich-quick scheme. If somebody is desperate for money, that person becomes easily manipulated by promises of big winnings. They cannot control their emotions and such vulnerable people are always victims. I think gambling for such a person is morally wrong.

However, for people with enough money, who do not throw all their money away and know how to control themselves, gambling can be seen as a form of entertainment, as it should be.
