Do you gamble because you don't have sufficient money?

I was in argument with someone. His view is that people who gamble are those that what they have is not sufficient for them and so they try to make more money from gambling. He said if you have sufficient money to take care of your needs that you won't think of gambling. He made reference to some rich people, who don't gamble because they have sufficient money to even gift to charity but that those rich who still gamble are only addicted to it not just because of the money. Therefore, that the percentage of the rich gambling is very small compared to those in middle class and lower class.

So my question is, is the percentage of the rich gambling lower than the middle and lower class?

I used to have a friend who worked as a croupier in a small casino. She recounted many different situations that occur in casinos, but in general, all of them happened to people with money, businessmen and production managers. In general, people who can afford to lose a couple thousand dollars every month. Therefore, I think that those who have money mostly go to the casino in order to get more, to play with luck and experience adrenaline. There are no poor people there, they are all working, trying to ensure their existence, they are not up to adrenaline.

I understand the logic of your opinion, but how can reducing the coefficient make their game safe? I believe that no matter what odds you put, the results of your defeats and losses will still tend to be 50-50 (when betting on the same odds). There is no research that proves that but as I see in my place the majority who gamble are those who have insufficient money and I ask them why. They answered that they were hoping to get lucky and become rich. Yet, they never notice that they are spending a lot of money but never win big at least once.

I think that's not really the case. If a person doesn't have enough money, he can't afford to gamble. Gambling is played only with money that is willing to lose. Maslow's pyramid is a concept of what individuals should achieve in sequence, following an hierarchy, to achieve balance, organical homeostasis, so they can finally start drawing their road to self-realization, which is the top of the pyramid, once all other needs are already fulfilled.

However, what we see for real are individuals who aren't able to fulfill basic levels of their pyramids. They don't have security and stability, they don't have love and belonging, their self-esteem is weak. So they appeal to disfunctional practices as a mean to escape from their harsh reality.

One of these escapes consist in gambling addiction. The disfunctional pleasure they have when gambling without limits and control works for them as a brief relief from the pain and frustration of daily life, especially when we take the financial aspect into consideration.

I agree with that that people with lower middle class economies are more vulnerable to becoming gamblers or even addicted because they have the assumption or goal of getting rich from gambling but it does not rule out the possibility that people with more wealth can easily become gambling addicts because of the fun which can be obtained and can multiply the money staked in large amounts.

Everyone has a percentage chance of becoming a gambler and unfortunately not many are able to have control over every gambling activity whether they are poor levels of society or even those with more wealth.

I'm sure most of the rich and upper middle class people are business people so the gambling they do is only for fun and not to multiply their money, but if there is a possibility, it could be that he is a rich child who inherited his parents' wealth so he spent their parents' money on gambling hoping to double their money but became bankrupt, to be honest I have never heard of many names of people who were successful because of gambling unless they collaborated with the casino itself.
