No one is happy when they get scammed or hacked but that doesn't stop the attempt of hacks and scams  subsequently happening. We are in the digital era and cyber crimes are one of the most rampant these days but the question is how do we keep ourselves safe from these threats?

Well you can't practically be over careful as every preventive measure has a flaw too and the goal is usually to ensure those flaws are at minimal and eventually not being exploited.

Some of us have experienced cyber issues like hacks or scams too and some have come across victims too. Now this thread is one to share those flaws and how to fix it so others don't fall victim.

RULES
  • please read the thread and rules carefully
  • No spamming
  • You are free to suggest alternative solutions to other users ideas
  • Make sure to share both the experience and the solution
  • Should be as brief as possible
  • Only financial hacks and scams should be shared (e.g crypto especially bitcoin and fiat)

This thread is to up our preventive measures concerning security. Remember the importance of security cannot be over emphasized.
Don't forget to keep your keys safe

Have learnt the hard way: use antivirus software but don't put your trust in them. Avoid using second-hand software or pirated ones. One of the most common ways to get easily hacked or infected is trying to avoid buying software for your gadgets directly from owners or licensed dealers because of cost control. There have been cases of malware always being infected in such software, and the most common is the clipboard virus.

If your browser is acting glitchy or crashes when you're accessing an exchange or any, do not ignore it. I know the hard way. A fake Google docs extension had been installed on my computer, in all browsers, Firefox, Chrome and even Microsoft Edge. The fake extension was switching the addresses when I tried withdrawing and depositing to another exchange. I wanted to move some funds from Kraken to Binance and they ended up to the scammer's address.

With that being said, I'd also advise you to check your extensions every once in a while. No anti-malware or antivirus could spot it at that time.

I've been using Kaspersky for almost 15 years but that is the only antivirus that save me a lot from any attacks.

Without Antivirus your PC/Laptop are vulnerable to any attacks. I don't know why others recommend not to use any antivirus? But for me to fight any attacks always use antivirus to avoid malware or any clipboard hijacker.

Yeah most of us here have learnt the hard way that’s why we have to follow up our security and same time help to prevent others from experiencing it , this is a nice thread ngl. Most people won’t take their privacy and security serious until they experience what lack of proper security can lead to .

Like for instance during pi listing season some folks lose their pi’s worth thousand of dollars due to click malicious link in their pi wallet that end up leading to their asset being stolen through that process, so be conscious with your security.

There have been lots of threads created concerning safety and security here, but some were moved to off-topic while some got deleted, if I am not mistaken.  I was curious as to what difference  I have seen here because I see no difference between some of those threads and this one, as they all are pointing towards safety as it relates to our assets and gadgets to say.

However, safety and security are very important because they guarantee and assure that we do not lose out to scams and hacks, as the case may be. Sometimes, it might not necessarily mean scams and hacks, but rather our ability to properly store our details so we do not lose our assets if anything happens that we would need our keys to access our assets. This topic is very important, and every crypto enthusiast needs to take it very seriously.

Don't trust any notification that appears on your screen.

I almost got scammed while using my Electrum wallet, which I believe was in 2019-2020, though I don't remember the exact date.  The scam involved tricking users through a notification that prompted them to install the latest version to proceed with their transaction, which could lead to installing malware that would hack and steal funds from their wallet.

Fortunately, I have a habit of verifying first, and I didn't click the link in the notification but instead went directly to the official website.  The next day, I read an article stating that many Electrum wallets had been compromised by a hacker.

Lesson learned: always verify first and check the official website.

Some of the recent things to be aware of, as attackers continue to find new ways to trick people.

  • Never rely on the first and last bits of an address you are about to send funds to, regardless of the source. Whether it is the explorer, your wallet history, or the address you just copied. Always also look for a random string in the middle to make sure it matches the intended address.
  • Do not use altcoins with terrible technology like ETH, where a single contract approval can drain everything you got. This advice is much simpler and more effective than any counter methods to this risk factor. Remember, you do not need these coins - they need you. Don't let somebody else fool you into believing otherwise.

There are people who use antivirus, and because of that, they don't take safety precautions against anything because they put all their trust in the antivirus. Kaspersky is a good antivirus; as far as I know, it's not like those free antivirus out there, but that does not mean I will put all my trust in it and not apply safety when visiting unknown sites.
Antivirus is completely useless against most crypto threats and the ways that people lose their money. It probably only helps with things like clipboard hijacking malware, but it won't save you from a dangerous smart contract or an address poisoning attack.

AntiVirus softwares serve their purpose but to a limited level. It takes a good technical eye to be able to notice their flaws but you need to understand that they are exploited in many ways too. I have experienced how a keylogger works first hand and I can say almost no antivirus will discover it.

In fact, it would need you the user to have good technical knowledge for you to notice that certain things changed. Some keyloggers are difficult to detect since they don't cause much lag especially if you have a good processor and RAM.

I don't have any story but I have my thread for contributions.
Security and Privacy Encylopedia.

There are more websites, advices on security from Jameson Lopp website.
Bitcoin security information and resources.

Use antivirus but not put trust on them?
I've been using Kaspersky for almost 15 years but that is the only antivirus that save me a lot from any attacks.

One thing for sure is that no matters the service you are using long as it a third-party app or service you most have to put in some extra form of efforts to make sure that we have atleast near 100% satisfaction in our daily demands, between that also we need to give in to extra work to make sure that we get involved in both how their function and act with our data's.

Most times the vulnerability comes in when the end user becomes lazy to take they own responsibility, and not leaving everything to the third-party services.

Instead of trying this hard to stay safe using PC why not just avoid PC when it comes to storing vital information? Digital assets doesn't belong on PC, these wallets available for PC are not for storing a large amount of assets.

The right place for money is bank account and the right place for your Bitcoin and others is a open source hardware wallet, whatever that's going to happen to your PC isn't going to be a big deal because in the end you won't lose a penny unless you store some money on the PC.

How many times are we going to keep battling malware and Trojan yet losing your assets in the process? Your assets are better off stored in a hardware wallet, if money isn't on the PC there is nothing to lose.

2FA is a very Important tool and can really prevent someone from having readily unauthorized access to your accounts, I experienced it first hand yesterday

Yesterday, I was having my phone and someone was trying very hard to hack my github repository, but it was on 2FA, I don't know how the person managed to get my password anyways, but the bad guy continued hacking it because they kept on sending me repeated codes which I ignored. The guy would've accessed my account easily if I didn't have 2FA on.

But something else struck my mind, what if this guy could successfully install spywares in my device which can even read notifications through probably sharing network with me or something engaging? Then he just needs to demand for the OTP via his computer and be able to get the code via his spyware already present in my device.  It got me thinking that the best 2FA is the one that prompts you to click a button or a physical action from your primary device and not sending a text. Google does that prompt stuff when you want to access your mail from another device and it is a better implementation.

Mia Chloe, I think this should be a self-moderated thread to filter off-topic posts from this thread, so it doesn't become a place for spamming. Thank you for coming up with this

Good topic, OP. But do you remember how many requests there were for a separate section on the forum to discuss security? I will just quote the collection of topics that @BenCodie very conscientiously selected. Just look at the collection of valuable guides, but they are unfortunately scattered throughout the forum, and I fear that your topic will also one day disappear into oblivion.

I started compiling a list until I stumbled across compilations and decided to bulk them all into one post. With all of these, a solid board of resources could be created. This does not include the ample amount of new information that could be created by topic creators if this board were to become a reality.

Its always a good reminder when all this Links getting posted again or shown to others , specially when right now there already made some new Fake Anns with Malware shit.
Dont believe what you read first and see on a topic , check always the things and Links a few times bevore you choose to get into something.

Use antivirus but not put trust on them?
I've been using Kaspersky for almost 15 years but that is the only antivirus that save me a lot from any attacks.

Without Antivirus your PC/Laptop are vulnerable to any attacks. I don't know why others recommend not to use any antivirus? But for me to fight any attacks always use antivirus to avoid malware or any clipboard hijacker.
You are right antivirus does not guarantee your safety, especially from clipboard malware or phishing links because the malware isn't directly created only for your IP. It's good that you apply maximum caution when using the device which your wallet is in.

But still, having AV will filter out all known viruses and malware. In most cases, it will save you a lot from any of these known attacks. However, like you said, don't put all your trust in AV. Yes, I agree, but having antivirus is a first step to protecting your PC/Laptop. Combining it with security practices should be able to keep you safe.
Do you think not having an AV can protect you by preventing you from accessing random sites? Even known sites have malware and viruses. If you don't want to use AV, then go with the Linux OS.

Good topic, OP. But do you remember how many requests there were for a separate section on the forum to discuss security? I will just quote the collection of topics that @BenCodie very conscientiously selected. Just look at the collection of valuable guides, but they are unfortunately scattered throughout the forum, and I fear that your topic will also one day disappear into oblivion......
You were actually right lovesmayfamilis the post is actually lost in the abyss but... The topic of security cannot actually be overemphasized though and it was with that spirit I kinda thought of the idea for this thread. Security is oje of the most discussed topic on the board and it never gets old since we aren't guaranteed a hundred percent safety both online and offline.
Anyways this can also be considered a bump before it gets lost in the abyss once again.
