This an open source project - all of the code and data is publicly available.  Anyone or any group could takeover the project and even hardfork it if there is enough support from miners and community.

Yes its all open source software. Literally anyone can update the software...the important factor is getting the community to use your version. If the current Dev drops off the map and there was someone the community could trust, then it would be no problem

I too heard the devs are going fine, and even bought a shiny new bicycle with the development funds.
