Ok so I've only just found out that smooth is also developing another crytonote coin.
Question, is this more of a test bed for features you think maybe useful to XMR or are you working on it as a competing currency?
Of course you are free to do what you like with your time, just as a member of the core team for XMR it just seems strange.
smooth is a greedy low life, his shitcoin, aeon, is dead.

Yep, AEON was abandoned. Smooth picked it up in order to have a testbed for features. In the last week, a hard fork has been "tested" and we also got some neat automated IP Banning stuff in the daemon.
So it has kind of a "bleeding edge" community feel to it - where the stakes aren't quite so high.

Watching the excitement lately i just want to preannounce something. I was creating an online catalog for my family business and then i thought, why dont i make it into a crypto eshop? Unfortunately due to serious lack of time i am not active at all here and also i havent finished building this eshop yet. But it would be soon tm ready and of course accepting monero. I have to add prices, more products and maybe better photos (well the quality of the photos already do the job i need but i am not sure there are appropriate for an eshop). I also really have to find a way to track monero prices automatically and since i am a programming noob it may take a while since there is not a ready module for that yet. In any case the shop must be running in mid October as a latest date. That is all http://monero.gr/eshop Hand crafted gold and silver jewellery that are being sold around shops in Greek islands for about 25 years.

He already answered this question on reddit, read from here on -> https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/3f28bk/whats_the_deal_with_aeon_coin_serious/ctkn0h0TL:DR: More or less an experimental coin, not really competing but more collaborating since relevant things will get merged upstream to XMR. K thanks for clearing that up. As I said not having a dig or insinuating anything smooth was just surprised is all. True that it is certainly a good test bed for new features where there aren't millions of $'s on the line (not to say the aeon project or community should lose their money either).

It's not only to have a live testbed for features being developed with/for Monero. Importantly, it allows for a divergent path of legitimate cryptonote development, led by one of the most trusted individuals in this corner of cryptoland. There will be features that - for any one of many reasons - will not make it into Monero. These could range from things that would not make economical sense, or would be too risky, or would fail to align with the unwritten social contract here, or anything else in between. My expectation with AEON is to see an alternative cryptonote path, fundamentally cooperative with Monero, even if at times it might be considered a competing project. Disclaimer: I do not expect (nor do I desire) to see any other cryptonote altcoin overthrowing Monero.

Have you been thinking it's “Way too hard to acquire these Monero Bucks”? A Step By Step Guide to Compiling Monero on OSX:I've noticed an increase of people wanting to compile the latest code. While there are plenty of Linux resources I haven't seen many for OSX. Also, the bitmonero Github README points to instructions that install an older release, which is not what you want. The good thing is, the instructions are not much different from Linux, but if you're new to the command line this may be intimidating to figure out. Just follow these instructions step by step in your Terminal and you'll be running in no time. 1. Install Homebrew. ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"2. Install various packages needed to build the Monero daemon and wallet. brew install git boost cmake libevent miniupnpc3. Clone the bitmonero repository to your computer using Git. git clone https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero.git bitmonero4. cd bitmonero5. Finally, compile the code. make release6. If you get no errors, you're ready to start the daemon and begin syncing the blockchain. cd build/release/bin./bitmonerod7. Command+T to open another Terminal tab. Now you can run simplewallet and start using Monero! ./simplewallet8. Hello everyone, As I stated in my last update some things are taking longer than I thought https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=753252.msg11997287#msg11997287I had planned to use some press releases to direct some traffic to 8xmr.com however that site if not yet ready. Currently 8xmr has it pointed to getmonero.org until 8xmr.com is ready to launch dEBRUYNE mentioned that a David Lapatie article has already been translated into Chinese here: http://www.8btc.com/moneroThe problem is that 8xmr may eventually become a competitor to 8btc so it would be wrong to ask 8xmr to point traffic there now. I also want to include 8xmr in our China launch plans because it could become our biggest Chinese community portal. I have no updates on new exchanges yet but hopefully if we all keep frequently contacting them they will add us relatively soon. More translations on the getmonero page will of course help. A few of you have asked about the significant of 8/8. The number 8 is considered a lucky number. Wedding presents for example may be in denominations of 8. Vanity phone numbers often carry the number 8 as do many popular websites (like 8btc). 8/8 does not directly relate to Monero. It just would have been a good day to launch a campaign. Sorry for the delays. Please continue to contact exchanges and complete all the missing English content on getmonero.org so that everything can be approved for translation. I communicate with 8xmr often and will let you know when that website is ready for launch.

A lofty goal. This is roughly 2000 times what the average would be at the end of normal emission. Kind of a trippy perspective isnt it?

A lofty goal. This is roughly 2000 times what the average would be at the end of normal emission. Kind of a trippy perspective isnt it? Making an extremely lofty assumption that eventually Monero will become the private ledger of the world, let's assume that 3 billion people on the planet all want to hold Monero. Their fair share, assuming equal distribution is about 0.006 Monero each! How exactly do subunits of Monero work, anyway? Do we have our own "satoshi"? How many of those are in a single full Monero? Let's look at that 0.006 Monero per person figure another way... There is about 60 trillion US dollars in the world as actual and spendable money (not derivatives and other ultra fancy financial assets). If the same 3 billion people wanted their fair share of all the dollars in the world, we would divide out 20,000 USD to all of those interested three billion people. But a world in which every active human has a bank account with 20k dollars in it is about as realistic as one where every human has 0.006 Monero.... Impossible. Wealth will never be so equally distributed. So how much is 8 XMR in our world where it becomes the global private ledger? A whopping $26 million of today's value. That is crazy to think about! So yeah, if XMR gets as big as I hope it does, 8 XMR is really all you will need to be extremely wealthy.

Is there any real standard on how many decimal places, and what is the minimum transfer limit, or like what is dust level? Thanks!

@AP
Monero currently has 12 decimal places as opposed to 8 for Bitcoin. As I understand it bitcoin can change this aspect relatively easily. Currently the 12 decimal places aren't meaningful and exchanges use 8. There is some basic math differences between 8 and 12 places but I don't remember the significance as it went in one neuron and out the other.
If you are asking about the naming convention, it has been discussed a bit but I don't believe there is a consensus.

With all due respect to the devs, I think the most appropriate thing is to refer back to the author of the cryptonote whitepaper, Nicolas van Saberhagen. (as much we all want a unit named after us; hell, who doesn't want to own a "pega" of Monero ) We named the smallest possible current unit for bitcoin a "satoshi". It only makes sense to name the smallest possible sub-unit of Monero something like a "saber", or a "hagen", or even "gen". In fact, "gen" is actually pretty catchy as the smallest possible unit. So if there are 12 digits of sub-units that means that every Monero is made up of 1 trillion "gen". Now let's say that 10,000 "gen" is a "hagen". And 10,000 "hagen" is a "saberhagen" (perhaps called a 'saber' for short) Then 10,000 "saber" equals one Monero. It works out nicely, no? edit: It works out even better when you think of it this way: 1 gen is the smallest unit, and is also 0.01% of a hagen. 1 hagen is 0.01% of a saber. 1 saber is 0.01% of a Monero. Usually humans can visualize 1% of something pretty easily. And with a little imagination they can rationally understand tenths and hundreds of a percent, but this is where human comprehension breaks down. This system introduces a new term for every major magnitude change. Of course, the bitoiners had this great system worked out with microbits and millibits and along came "mass marketing" and declared a millionth of bitcoin to be a "bit". So we may decide this and then in a few years some idiot yells, "hey u guise, wats one millionth of a Monero? A mon?" and we're like, "No, that's sounds retarded." but then everyone else is like, "No that's awesome! YAY!" and consensus wins.

Plan B? Well, Plan B is to piss off the bitcoiners, the computer scientists, the Bytecoiners, and pretty much everyone at once while making Monero easy to understand for the average person. People are familiar with hard-drives, right? Oh fuck, you guys are going to love this one. Well let's just call 1 trillionth of a Monero (the smallest possible unit) a "byte". Then we can call a million of them a megabyte, a billion a gigabyte, and a trillion a Monero. Plan C? Same as plan B except we keep " gen" as the smallest units and use hard drive prefixes all the way up to 1 Monero. "gen" = 1/1,000,000,000,000th of a Monero "kilogen" = 1/1,000,000,000th of a Monero "megagen" = 1,000,000th of a Monero "gigagen" = 1,000th of a Monero "teragen" = "Monero" I expect these plans to be wildly popular and meet with wild support, and no opposition whatsoever.
