Hey guys, I am having a problem with simplewallet,

I have my keys and address files in the proper directory but when I try to start bitmonerod I get an error message but it shuts down immeaditly there are words flashing in red but it shuts off to quick for me to read them. Looks like it is saying something about some type of file path or storage location.

Are there any tricks to using the blockchain bootstrap? just put it in the directory and blockchain.raw, right?

There are instructions on how to use the blockchain bootstrap here:

https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/releases

Under "Updating: Blockchain Conversion".

Can you have two different wallets in the same directory, and load each wallet as you need to using the same daemon?

Yes, you can have multiple wallets using one daemon. To do so, you have to run multiple instances of simplewallet.

How do you view the log to see what the error is?

Launch bitmonerod with the --log-level 2 argument. The exact error message should be visible in your log file.

Privacy matters, use Monero - A true untraceable cryptocurrency

I'm really impressed that XMR is the first on Poloniex in terms of volume since a few days now. Same with the margin trading.
Guys do you reckon it is still the right time to invest in Monero? Isn't it a bit too late to enter the game?

May I suggest you ask your question in the speculation thread.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=753252.21200

Of course you will have to interpret the answers and figure out what is correct for you.  Research!

Did you hear about Aplpha Bay exit scam? People had problem there with BTC frozen for two weeks before a xmr pump.
Such scam. Dark markets just needed liquidity to exitscam and multiply their btc. Does it mean that xmr price will be going down for the next couple of months?
We'll see the real demand now when there are no thousands of stolen btc coming to support the price.

Disclaimer.
I was invested heavly in Monero and took profit during this pump.
Don't accuse me of wanting the price to go lower? Bids placed low  Wink

Monero is most profitable to mine right now, according to WhatToMine.com (not for every gpu/cpu, mind you).
Cryptonight algo is also on the second place.

Ya it is cryptonight.

Its one of the best algorithm for cryptocurrency gives more anonymous layer. Most of darknet deal are now with more so few more coins based on cryptonote will also get counted soon.

I'm a pretty early investor (fortunately not so early as to have caught the top of that first huge spike though) and I just bought more. I can't tell you what to do but words are cheap so I tell you my actions.

*edit* Words may be cheap but let me explain my reasoning none the less. Early on I recognized the innovative nature of the technology when I read the whitepaper. However at that time it could have easily been the case that monero never would gain traction despite being innovative, useful and technically sound. Sometimes good things just don't gain traction and its a travesty but its the real world. Fast forward to now, we are getting press, people are reading the white paper, bitcoin jesuses are entering the space. We have taken the necissary foothold that we needed inorder to be in a position to gain traction if my beliefs about the technology its self are correct. Because of this I see monero as a better investment today than it was back then. Benefit of hindsight excluded obviously.

Markets tend to price things more fairly than not.  Buying now is not more wrong than buying in the past.
The difference is that you are buying a more successful effort, so it costs appreciably more.

No its not to late. These prices I predict won't last a long time.  I feel its up from here for a good while.  I'm a long term holder.

Bitcoin devs are increasingly becoming concerned about Bitcoin's lack of fungibility and privacy as the Scaling conference now includes these topics as a point of focus. This is a good thing because many people still don't realize how Bitcoin's traceability reduces its usefulness. Unfortunately for Bitcoin holders (myself included) I don't see strong privacy features getting incorporated for a number of years to come. Think the disagreements about blocksize are/were bad? Wait until proposals for confidential transactions, stealth addresses, sidechain pegs, etc are introduced. The Bitcoin community is too fractured and too large to be able to quickly make and implement decisions. In some ways this is good - the 21m BTC limit for example. In others, such as privacy, it's painful and I start to see the lack of agility found in most large legacy companies (Kodak, Nortel, RIM, HP etc).

TLDR; Monero has no strong competitor that check all the boxes of superiority looming on the horizon.

Hi all,

For those who missed it, the deadline for submissions has been extended
to Sept 9th so be sure to submit before then! We will be doing rolling
acceptance this time around to try to get most responses out before the
23rd.

Because a few folks seemed to have some confusion, the definition of
"scaling" here is pretty broad - while we definitely will have a lot of
talks on the usual tx-volume-throughput things, the topics of interest
also include things like fungibility
. The full list from the site (for
inspiration purposes, this is by no means exhaustive) is:

Improving Bitcoin throughput
Layer 2 ideas (i.e. payment channels, etc.)
Security and privacy
Incentives and fee structures
Testing, simulation, and modeling
Network resilience and latency
Fungibility
Anti-spam measures
Block size proposals
Mining concerns

Thanks,
Matt [Corallo]

What is the meaning of the error message below in response to an attempted transfer in simplewallet?

"Error: internal error: Duplicate indices though we did not ask for any"

From IRC:

Quote
<moneromooo> That is "try again". I'm not sure yet why, but it can be ignored and retried.

and if you can catch that while having log level 2 enabled in the wallet, please send logs (make a new issue on github and attach the relevant logs - just the part for the tx being made, keep the rest private).

Mods and tech guys -

What do I need to do do upgrade the wallets? I am apparently trying to load an old wallet and it needs some type of upgrade?

Do you remember which OS the wallet was created on? If so, download the binaries from the getmonero website for that same OS. Extract the binaries, go to the extracted folder and open bitmonerod (the daemon). Bitmonerod first has to sync fully before you are able to restore your wallet. If bitmonerod is fully synced (you can check this by typing "status" into bitmonerod, it should be equal to the blockheight displayed on moneroblocks.info), place the wallet.bin, wallet.bin.address.txt, and wallet.bin.keys in the same folder as bitmonerod and simplewallet are located. Subsequently, open simplewallet and type in the wallet's name. Simplewallet will automatically update you to a new version and you should be able to see your coins (and transact with them).

Link: https://getmonero.org/downloads/

Sidenote: if you need help with setting up bitmonerod and simplewallet, you can follow these guides:

https://github.com/monero-project/monero-site/blob/master/knowledge-base/user-guides/create_wallet.md

https://getmonero.org/knowledge-base/user-guides/simplewallet

Yes, it was created on windows 7 64 bit and I am trying to load it on 64 bit windows right now as well. The problem is I can't even get bitmonerod to sync.

Trying to start over was the first thing I did, When I download new binaries and start over I still get the same problem. The error reads "Uncaught Exception" attempt to get timestamp from height 1105296 failed -- timestamp not in the db

If it's the old standard, I think you will have to just send your monero to a new wallet. You should be able to run simplewallet.exe with the flag --wallet-file arg to recover it for starters. Then just make a new wallet and send to a modern mnemonic seed style wallet.

Here is a post about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/3jteca/how_to_import_old_monero_wallet/ and the answer worked. But probably if he had just run it with the flag I talked about above he wouldn't have gotten that error.

At this point all I am desperatly trying to do is even get bitmonerod to work. I tried starting over with the new binaries but it reads "Uncaught exception! attempt to get timestamp from height 1105296 failed -- timestamp not in the db

What does db stand for? And hat someone tells me to run with the --wallet-file command, what do they mean? when I run that command it returns unknown command...
