I want to view my monero transaction history. This must be possible using the view key somehow. Can anyone explain to me how to do this?

I'll assume you are using simple wallet which is now monero-wallet-cli

the command I use is show_transfers

just type help and it will give you a list of all the commands available

BTW, what is the story behind the name "monero"?
Who came up with it?

I actually thought monero could be literally translated as 'coin'?

Rogerver just mentioned that he is very doubtful that GUI will be out before zcash launch.

https://forum.bitcoin.com/monero/monero-price-speculation-thread-t10274-60.html#p34766

So what? It's not like he has any special insight on the matter...

Don't worry about Zcash, just ride it and use your profits to buy moar monero.
My thoughts exactly...
I just did it with Zcoin  Cheesy

Careful there with Zcoin. The founders don't have stellar reputations: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1638450.msg16515564;topicseen#msg16515564

Personally, I'm steering clear.

I had never heard of Zcoin until earlier today, where I saw a reddit ad for it while browsing /r/buttcoin (lol). The advertisement simply introduced it as a currency that is up 500% in value. Any altcoin that tries to bring in newbies by announcing profits is a pretty big red flag as a scam. Definitely not going to invest any money or even time researching it.

Nothing scheduled.  Maybe the official GUI will be released but even then I don't know about pump nor do I care.  There will be a point release with some minor improvements in addition to the GUI.  Just yesterday 12 pull requests were merged into master.  In Jan. RingCT will be activated which will significantly enhance privacy.

Edit: 7 more PRs merged today.

GUI, lots of GUIs.

IMO the release of GUIs are by no means certain of a "pump", Monero has shown to be quite the anti-pump-and-dump coin, it will do the opposite of what most people are expecting when they are least/most expecting something.
Well, most likely it will be, buy the rumor and sell the news. Since everyone bought already expecting great things, once the GUI comes out Monroe will probably decline on the news. Which doesn't look good at this point since momero is already declining.

It's not mine, but owner seems responsive and interested in growing the site, and it certainly has the potential to be a lot more spiffy than shitcointalk (thermos' $200M website update notwithstanding), in that it has p2p chat and chatrooms, notifications, etc. built in.
