BTW, what is the story behind the name "monero"?
Who came up with it?

-sf-

Esperanto

Aaah, very interesting. Smiley
I was wondering if it's from an actual language or just a new word creation.

A reason more to like this coin.

is pepe blind?

He just downloaded and ran the windows wallet, but can't figure out where the blockchain is stored?

Where can he find it?

When you start the daemon, it tells you that information.
In our case...
Loading blockchain from folder C:\ProgramData\bitmonero

Pepe keeps digging.

He gets lots of errors of this sort:

Is this something to worry about?

EDIT: Sorry, fresh account doesn't let pepe post pictures in their full glory yet. But soon.

Pepe wonders,

is there a protocol documentation for monero, similar to what bitcoin has here?

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Protocol_documentation

In particular the structure of messages (getblocks, inv, version, etc...).

Pepe wants to eavesdrop on that node chatter.  Smiley

Thank you. Still syncing.

How big is monero's blockchain right now?

Pepe wants to eavesdrop on that node chatter.  Smiley

Furthermore, Pepe struggles to dissect the blockchain structure of monero.
He's currently looking at data.mdb with his HEX-Editor and there is no ressemblance to bitcoin blockchain at all.

Is there a description of the datastructure of monero's blockchain somewhere?
What database format is used here?

Pepe would love if someone technically adept could point him in the right direction.

EDIT: Ok, Pepe found this link here: https://getmonero.org/knowledge-base/developer-guides/ but this is pretty limited to JSON and RPC stuff.
Pepe is not an amateur.
Is there more low-level material somewhere?
Pepe would hate to have to read C++ code (since he is mainly an expert in PePe++), but if he has to, he will.

Hm, interesting.

So Pepe learns that monero uses LMDB and BerkeleyDB for the storage of its blockchain.

Pepe will put on his MAGA cap and get to work now!

It's about 8GB.
It will take many hours if you syncing on a mechanical disk drive. An SSD will reduce dramatically this time.

Thanks. Pepe is patient.

Is there a secure node I can connect with to check my balance with simplewallet in the meanwhile?

Point your wallet to node.moneroworld.com, using the following commands:

(linux / unix-type)
./monero-wallet-cli --daemon-host node.moneroworld.com

(windows)
monero-wallet-cli.exe --daemon-host node.moneroworld.com

Some background:

At what point in the RingCT rollout would an FFS proposal for more manpower speed up multisig implementation?

Well someone else was wondering the same thing and made a detailed post in the Monero forum about this just yesterday.  There is a reply by fluffypony.

Something like 2-3 GB. It takes more disk space than that once stored in a database (was about 9 GB in the previous version, I think it might be less now).

Pepe understands.

So the sum of the size of all those 1164777 blocks as received over the network is currently 2-3 GB,
but once they are put in the LMDB the size is much bigger.

https://gist.github.com/hyc/be05ac1b5af0dccb6ac722307be61d53

It's already out of date, now that ringCT is in the code base. But it covers the important bits.
A similar table is in the code. https://github.com/monero-project/monero/blob/master/src/blockchain_db/lmdb/db_lmdb.cpp#L148

Since this is the type of documentation that is only relevant for developers, it lives in the code and nowhere else. That's how open source is meant to work.

Thanks.

Indeed, there is no way around Pepe studying the code from A - Z.

And Pepe sees beautiful code. Nicely written.
