You must remember to be unsure of anyone's statements; the means of communication is trustless, think about it.

The reason Veri was targeted probably had a LOT to do with the VeriBit protocol being abused.

The developers of VRC might have paid off mintpal to not disclose this, and mintpal would have obliged because it basically means neither party has to claim responsibility.

This is just putting two and two together; why wouldn't any other coin be taken? Why wouldn't the hackers just target Bitcoin?

If you choose to believe what you are told from the people that are solely responsible, be my guest; there are plenty of blue pills to go around.

As for me, I'll choose the red one.

what Vericoin is doing should create an outrage in crypto world. they sabotage cryptocurrency as a whole.

I think they made the right decision given the circumstances. Any further discussion should be in their thread so as not to derail the XC thread.

I have to disagree with you. This veri/mintpal discussion belongs on every serious altcoin thread. XC can be hacked just as easily on mintpal, 19% of total xc supply is on mintpal right now. What veri does may set a precedent for future coin attacks.

I don't believe this in any way derails the xc conversation.

How do you know 19% of total XC supply is on Mintpal now?

give or take, it's not completely accurate

Click on largest wallets tab

Thanks never watched it. Well <20% for a site where most of volume is done it's not too bad. Still some people need to put their money on wallet.

sure glad i bought a ferrari with vrc just prior to the hack.. cause now i got a ferrari and all my vrc back in my wallet Wink

-this is a joke - but also a real life reason you shuldnt roll back a block chain when the chain is commercialized

Did this really happen? I mean the blockchain rollback. Side-effects?

Yes this happens.  so basically you buy something with coins... you get the product and take it home... then they roll back the block chain to a point prior.. when you still had those coins.   and so now you got ur coins back plus the product... so now you can go re buy the product again Wink

its a win for you because you get what you bought plus all teh coins back u spent... but for the dude who gave you the product, hes now out the product and out the coins you gave him.   hes at a big loss.

It could have happened to XC, I wonder what would your opinion be then.

So it's either leave 30% of the coins in hands of criminals to dump on exchanges or execute a 51% attack or cause inconvenience to a few people that happened to trade in that 1-2 hour window which will later be reimbursed by Mintpal and set a precedent in the alt world. Tough choice...last I heard even Bitcoin is experimental software. Crypto is programmable money. As long as majority agrees and votes with their wallets stuff can change. You can still run your wallet on the old chain Cheesy

I wonder if Dan would have roll backed.

If it happened to XC my opinion would be much different, reason being is I would have high hopes that 40% of all XCs were not held within mintpal.  I have more faith that XC is not being held to dump but rather to accumulate for future.  With that in mind, I would assume most XCs are staking in users wallets not on exchanges ready to be hacked or dumped.

I would like to estimate that perhaps maybe 80-90% of all XCs are in the investors own controlled wallets - and not on an exchange ready to dump.

that is my thoughts.

Thank you.

BTC and LTC were unsuccessfully targeted. Also how was VeriBit abused since it is capped to 1 BTC per transaction?

So if you are paranoid and uninformed you take the red pill.

seems I cant unlock my wallet. says password is incorrect... so when I entered it (twice) i must have got it wrong both times! wtf Sad

This wouldnt be because I updated to the latest wallet would it?

thankfully i was only testing it with 1XC!

Still, Its made me even more worried to transfer the rest from mintpal.

so, do I delete all files including wallet.dat etc and start again?

In lieu of the incident with Mintpal, and to +1 the discussions here about keeping coins in cold storage for safety, here's a link for those browsing this thread who are either new to crypto or are unsure how to secure their coins:

http://xc-official.com/wallet/

The last portion of this guide talks about how to back up your wallet and back up your private keys.

Makes one wonder.

In either case, it's by far the safest to get your coins off the internet.

And then to backup your wallet and private keys properly.

Check out the How-to's on the website for instructions on keeping your XC safe.

(This how-to will be updated later today to reflect the latest wallet version; however backup instructions remain identical.)

As stated it would be a problem with the password itself.  If that wallet is locked and you can't unlock it because your password doesn't work, there's really nothing you can do to recover it.  Thankfully you only had 1XC in it, so it's not too much of a loss.

yeah i must have just made a mistake. It was the weekend and I'd had a few beers. ive backed up my wallet anyway even though theres only 1 xc in it. but reading the guide...

"Important: Note that the wallet.dat file is encrypted, so if you lose your password then you will not be able to access it on any computer."

...so its gone anyway basically yeah?

Like I say, its only 1 xc so im not really fussed.

much respect to XC. I think it's devs are active and providing results.

That said, can we refrain for the juvenile finger pointing @ VRC.

Be glad XC wasn't targeted  and the lessons learned from this incident prevent future attacks like this one.

If you want to throw coins under the bus how about choosing shit coins based upon promises and not results.

I always include XC & VRC when discussing crypto's future as their dev teams are getting things done and respond promptly to issues.

Slightly off topic, but I normally use RoboForm for all my passwords so I can make ridiculously long ones without actually having to remember (or even know) them. I just have one master password for everything.

Would you say this is a good or bad idea in the crypto world?

A great idea, but you should write them down as well for physical back up.

Confirmed for VeriCoin developer posing as Ethereum Developer. No there is no PR timeline. Now would you kindly piss off?

Good nick to post ratio.

Vericoin dev? posing as Ethereum dev?

VeriSend being abused resulting in 2,000,000$ stolen?

Piss off? Me?

Lmao.

GTFO and learn the ropes before posting crap, just make you look like a retard. Or just post images, at least people will not know...

--

On a different note, I feel really curious about what Dan would do if XC would get stolen 30% (not 40%) of the total coins, surely he knows how hard this decision would be to take.

Again, would be awesome if you guys give us some hits about the incoming PR.

Thanks.

theres an option to print out all the passwords, but being over paranoid by reading about bitcoin paper wallets being stored in the printer etc, im worried to do that even. lol

Have you guys heard about the new surveillance laws UK are passing: http://rt.com/uk/171764-uk-law-privacy-threat/

This is why platforms like XC will do humanity a great service, by encrypting our communications and transactions.

We have all had enough of the encroaching Big Brother police state.

Do you guys think we win back our privacy through crypto?

I just downloaded the mac wallet and am reading the _MUSTREAD_.txt file.

In it it says:

Quote
Wallet has Been udpated to match branding... so has your %appdata% - backup wallet.dat

This means if you run the wallet, it will create a new directory called XCurrency under %appdata%.

Fist run wallet to create directory[then close] or

mkdir %appdata%\XCurrency

then to copy

copy %appdata%\X11Coin\*.* %appdata%\XCurrency\

For Seed Nodes

Copy the enclosed XCurrency.conf to your %appdata%\XCurrency\

So I copied everything from the X11Coin folder to the XCurrency folder and the blockchain and my wallet loaded up just fine.

My question is, do I still need to copy xcurrency.conf to the Xcurrency folder? Because I don't see it in the .zip file containing the mac wallet. I only see qt.conf.

Is that just a windows thing? Or what's the deal with the .conf file for seed nodes?

Anyone got an answer to this? Do I need a .conf file like it says in the readme for the mac wallet? I didn't see one in the .zip for the mac wallet but the readme says I need it.
