Strange days here. NEM keeps sliding lower on tiny volumes. Feels like we need catapult ASAP or this coin will fall into irrelevance.

http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/nem.io

The biggest change is NEM presence in Japan has fallen off the face of the Earth.  NEM was top 10,000 in Japan and it has sunk below top 30,000.

NEM has pretty much been sidelined out of Japan by Ripple in the last month or so.  You all better be praying that the Catapult release and Takao Asyama can bring NEM back in Japan.

When people say weak marketing they don't mean NEM versus shitcoins.  NEM has better marketing than almost all crypto projects (even Dash and Monero these days).  The problem is NEM can't be playing second fiddle to Ethereum in USA / UK and second fiddle to Ripple in Japan ~ it's just not healthy for long term growth.

For every conference Vitalik Buterin attends - NEM pretty much needs its' own person and also hit up the ones where Vitalik doesn't go, either.

I don't think you can make a world crypto by being #1 in 2nd world countries, where NEM has been doing well for a long time, like Spain and Malaysia ~ sad to say ~ unless millions within those countries start using NEM but such a high localized use would make it highly political (e.g., how long until Spanish and Malaysian government tries to shut you down).

There ain't no Revolution like a NEMolution.  The only solution is Bitcoin's dissolution! NEM!

It seems that ICOs are not as good as we thought earlier last month when it had great effect on ETH price. Look just few weeks later where ETH ICOs took ETH price! All ICOs are cashing out to start dev operations. From that perspective I am not excited about any NEM based ICOs namely the ones that would employ crowd sale. Cause whatever they will add to NEM price it will eventually evaporate as what is happening now with ETH ICO bubble.

true, but you're looking too short term. if they're cashing out to start operations, and successfully build and deliver to their ico roadmaps, this can build signficiant value in the longer term.
Thats right if the ico will succeed for sure it will bring good impact with nem and we will expect more dev to use this platform im quite unsure what happen to eth but it seems that almost all coins are falling so we really aint sure if those new ico failed or just a trend of coin movements.

Sure, it is good for long term. My point is any short term added value from ICOs is not that sustainable as we've witnessed ETH ICOs short term added value evaporates in just few weeks.

I don't think it really matters to be #1. The current #1,2,3,... are very important to other cryptos at #10,11,12,.... NEM is not really competing with any other crypto. NEM has it own very unique features and foundation that makes NEM stands alone with no competition. It is just the potential of NEM is not fully unleashed yet. Sooner or later the giant is gonna wake up and we don't really care when. Let the giant rest for a while. Catapult will indeed wake UP the giant Wink

Hi. Sorry for the late reply. We are terribly busy, but appreciate your research as always.

LetsInvest:

1) Am I correct to say catapult is mainly for banks to adopt (or private companies to use private chains like mijin) and lesser for the benefit of the private individual cryptocurrency enthusiasts? Basically, like Ripple 2.0 because it allows existing financial institutions to get deeper into lower level management of funds, assets, accounts, and files?
Catapult is not mainly designed for banks. It does have a lot of great features for banks to utilize and we hope they are interested, but it seems like at the enterprise level more companies that are not banks are interested.

Really, Catapult is being designed to be broadly available for many different kinds of businesses and organizations to adopt.

As it for being like Ripple 2.0, we are happy that Catapult will offer a lot of options that Ripple doesn't, so we will see if that will be enough for banks to make the switch or not.

LetsInvest:

2) Is the intention for banks/ businesses to run on the main net or on private chains? So will the average harvester also process private chain txs and get paid in real XEM fees? How will private chains be run if no
Private chains will possibly be anchored to the mainnet or have cross chain capabilities enabled through the main chain, so even though they don't use XEM directly for transaction fees within their chain, they do in fact still contribute to the greater ecosystem.

I think the assumption is no bank will be using the main chain as its primary chain, but the hope is that the main chain will offer a little extra utility and some business or txs might be redirected through it. This would be the except, not the rule though, as one of the biggest benefits of a private chain is not having to pay fees to harvesters.

LetsInvest:

3) Is there any way for people to build applications that run on the NEM blockchain like there is with Ethereum? Could someone, for example, build Golem on NEM? I don't fully understand how the network will grow by private input on other projects because the smart contract system is either very different or not really in existence that I can tell anyway.

I know almost nothing about Golem, so I can't really speak to it directly, but I am guessing you have a Golem token and you use it to buy computer power. If so, then yes, of course, that can be built on NEM, and to be honest, it doesn't even need its own token or ICO. It could have been done directly with XEM. They could have probably built that project on Ethereum using ether actually, but...... then how could they get a lot of money for an ICO?

We could be other networks on NEM too with special tokens or XEM for things like decentralized storage, but nobody has done it yet.

On a different note, there is a reason too. Decentralized computing power or decentralized storage just isn't a viable economic product. Because it is decentralized, you would never be able to get a product as reliable as what you would get from Amazon or Dropbox. Amazon and Dropbox already have some levels of redundancy and protection, and for a decentralized network to have the same level of reliability, it would have to have A LOT more redundancy than the centralized players. So a user will either end up paying the same amount for an inferior product with decentralization or pay a lot more for a product that is just as stable. AirBnB and Uber were able to tackle an industry with some gaps in their model. But distributed computing power and distributed storage is already been optimized for maximum efficiency in the centralized world. It is going to be really hard to find gaps in Dropbox's or Amazon's model.

Look at a decentralized model like the blockchain. It is sooooooo terribly inefficient and weak compared to a centralized database solution, but what it offers is an extreme level of security. For storing, money, people will be willing to deal with the decentralized drawbacks for the increased security, but for securing their family videos, or running a model 3D, they don't need high level of security, they want the cheapest, quickest, and easiest option. Amazon and Dropbox know that and have offered a service that is already finely tuned and optimized for that. Both Amazon and Dropbox have free tiers for smaller users, it is going to be hard for Golem or Storj to beat free, easy, and reliable.

If decentralized storage or computing power is viable on a decentralized network, you will just see Dropbox and Amazon move into that market, the same way that power companies offer people with solar panels a few pennies for directing electricity back into the grid. But I doubt we will see that as it doesn't make sense I am guessing.

jimgreen:

I am a user, simply. I used NCC, NIS, NanoWallet, and buy XEM, hoping to make mosaic one day by myself. NEM can simply surpass Ethereum with this set of tools. BUT, these tools are not actively updating according to the Github record.

The team is working on Catapult, which isn't open source, as I can't see the code on Github.
The devs have been working on Catapult for 1.5 years. The basic end to end system is finished. Now they are working on wallet support and adding extra features. It is a shame that nobody can see their hard work, which I promise you there has been a lot of. As far as I know, the plan for Catapult is to open source it on day one.

jimgreen:

I really fail to see how a successful Catapult can increase the XEM price.

Catapult will be the new NEM code for both private and the public chain. We will upgrade the main chain and with it bring a lot of new features.

Hello,

So for I was holding my NEM in my bittrex account and today first time I set up a wallet and sent 85 NEM from my bittrex account to my wallet. Bittrex gave me a transaction ID but I don't see my NEM in my account and incoming transaction also don't show any transactions.

Is it common will take a lot of time to receive NEM?

I see this message beside my balance - might be inaccurate, NIS not synchronized yet. What is this means? until it complete I don't see my NEM?

Here is the transaction link - http://chain.nem.ninja/#/account/NCAZTQC5XFQP4TACIS337ZRQKPET5QZTFRJIVRGB/0

Appreciate your help.

Thanks!

You have to wait for NIS to be completely synchronized!
The first time will take a long time, but then everything should be fine!

NEM is stable now, at least for the next 30 seconds anyway. I'm hoping it continues down below 5500.

I've only started altcoins, made few good but also few bad calls, which made me very cautious where I put my money into, but this NEM, got my attention like very few others. Others that were successful for me, but knock wood.
It's still quite cheap, so I'm just gonna hold Long Term, (+2 years) NEM's that I have and will increase amount by quite a bit. So voting for downwards trend next few days till I stock it up. But this ICO is coming in wrong time for me...
Soooo, yeah, GO NEM. Hope no disappointments.

I see it the same. Adding every time, when there are dips like now, some little amount to my stake. The NEM chart reminds me an ebb on the beach, while the tsunami is building up and coming with imense pace towards the market.

Thanks for the details. Now it is started showing the balance.

Not sure what was the issue and this morning I see balance in my account. I will keep those contact details for the future use. Looks like a good time to accumulate some more of these coins for the longer term.
