Wont the  ASICs  make the difficultly rise so rapidly that it makes us little guys dead in the water almost instantly or no?
well this is maybe true, I am mining with 50Gh unit and I am also not lucky if I see the speeds of others, but that is not upon us. I started mining Iceberg coin with two of my GPUs and  with 20Mh I am at the bottom of the line, top ones are mining over 1Gh at N5 scrypt ( do not believe they do mine with GPU farms, it looks as some sort of new ASIC units). So we have to hope for some coins.

You can always rent some rigs like most do
Sure that is true, but that is not what wrote about. How on earth can someone (even if using mining farm) can get to 50gh? that is not possible (just calculate price of top gpu, mobo, cpu, do not speak about consumption of such a powerful mining beast). And even if, than these prices I see of renting these units are also crazy sometimes.

prices are usually going up when there is high demand, and most of them getting those hashes are just renting as crazy
