I just download the wallet i can make a backup ( this will be a .dat file ) but where can i import this file iff i need to ?
if you are on a windows 7 computer this is the path C:\Users\youruserername\AppData\Roaming\BitcoinDark replace yourusername with your computer user name and the file is wallet.dat Thanks, been trying to figure this out! I just found the one -qt file. NB AppData is hidden. Open Explorer and type %AppData% to find it. A lot happier knowing I can recover my wallet if I need to now. Out of interest, what's contained in the wallet.dat file, and how often should I backup?

thanks for the quick reply i just donated 50.47184647 BTCD to "Donation Update! Total can now be checked on http://bitcoindark.net/development-pot and can be found under the Fundraiser pulldown on the top bar. We're now asking the community to help raise funds for development purposes. We currently have a lot in the pipeline, and we have need to fund Core Development, Website Development, Promotion and Marketing, etc. All donations will be pooled into one large fund with which the dev team will then use on a need to need basis. The process will be transparent and all funds being paid out will be listed on the new website. Our short term goal is to raise 5000 BTCD. We hope the BitcoinDark community can provide the support we need to make BTCD one of the top coins around! James (jl777) will match all BTCD raised for donations with an equal market value of NXTprivacy Please support BitcoinDark development by providing a donation to the following address: RDtnnLj5LQ8YMxBJbHX1N4jNKeaC67FLGW "

I am not sure if I am correct but backing up your wallet is not necessary if you don't create new receiving address and receiving coins with that new address. So, I think backup is only necessary if you receive coins in a new address. I highly recommend using a strong password to lock your wallet too.

If you want to stake, the wallet must be unlocked. So, encrypt your wallet and then unlock it for staking, which is much safer than storing on any exchange.

I usually keep a backed up wallet.dat on two or three different usb sticks just to be safe. Backing up the wallet.dat takes one minute anyway, so it would be silly not to

Yes, totally - but what would require a new backup? New address added? Anything else?

I know as far as other QT wallets go, as long as you have the .dat file then all associated addresses will show up. No new backups are needed.

That's how i understand it, but didn't want to spout misinformation. Thanks rlhead! Under what circumstances, if any, would a new wallet.dat backup be necessary?

The only reason I ever backup a new .dat file is if I create a new wallet. If someone knows of another reason why one would need to backup the same .dat file then I would also like to know. Maybe I've missed something. It would be good to get a definitive answer.

Whenever you get a new address, you need to backup the wallet. Or you can do a: dumpprivkey <addresss>
that will display the privatekey and from that the rest of the info can be recreated when you import it
With telepods, you will be creating new addresses each time you get a telepod. In general it is a good idea to make a local backup whenever you get any new address. USB or encrypted online backup whenever you have received enough new BTCD that you would not like it if it is gone.

P.S. To the person that wanted plain english, I have been trying to speak normally, I just cant tell so well if what I am saying is easy or hard to understand. So if there is any specific question about anything, just ask

It depends on how it implements change addresses.

You broke this one down nicely James. One more question then...... what are the security risks involved with having a wallet unlocked for staking? If none, I guess I'd just like to know the difference between a locked and an unlocked wallet?

If none, I guess I'd just like to know the difference between a locked and an unlocked wallet? a wallet unlocked only for staking can only stake, to do transaction you will still have to type in your passphrase. after encrypting your wallet it will always be locked (you cant do anything besides looking) until you unlock it by entering your passphrase - at this point you can do what you want. so its really important to always encrypt the wallet. and for more security while staking you can unlock your wallet only for staking. /edit i.e. you have your wallet (completely) unlocked for the purpose of staking: whoever gains access to your computer could steal all your funds (without the need of your passphrase)

In my opinion if someone don't know how much should he donate.http://bitcoindark.net/development-potLittle math 1.6 milion coins guys need 5 k So if you own 100 k it should be 312.5 BTCD But let's double it ( ' let say somebody don't know he should donate' ) So 100k BTCD = 625 BTCD 10k BTCD = 62.5 BTCD (1k) 1000 BTCD = 6.25 BTCD Is it bad idea ?
