Well this is not the post that I had dreamed of or wanted to write up.  After two days of negotiations with two different companies (post quote) I see now that I cannot produce a quality product on a more reasonable timeline and cost than my newly joined competitors.  It is a sad day for me twofold as one, I pride myself on doing a quality job for cheaper than most and two, my desire to help the mining community progress has been one of my main tenets since getting involved in Bitcoin.

As it stands now I will not be getting my gridseed cable designs mass produced as they would be delayed by several weeks at best and have a unit cost far more than even I would be willing to pay retail on top of the miner cost. With outlays upwards of $20k I just am not in a position to take on that much risk. I apologize to all who have shown interest in my gridseed cables for letting you down but at least there seem to be alternatives available.

The other sources use a similar design to mine and they should be ready much sooner. I do not advocate for them as I only trust my own work so please be attentive to detail.


I will still offer up my services for custom work if you would like and I will have some small batches of various mining cables available shortly.

I was hoping Cablez would come through for us, but given that is not going to happen, I would like to offer my services.  I have prepared with a supplier in China all of the cables necessary to power a USB hub, a Pi/controller, and 12 Gridseeds in scrypt-mode using 1 6-pin PCIe and 2 molex connectors all on a regular ATX power supply.  I am calling it the Gridseed Power Pack, and I am selling it for $40 on my website at:

I have heard of kickstarter but it wasn't the money that was needed. It would be very risky to go ahead with a product that would be late to market and more expensive even if I deemed it more robust. Hence why I decided to bow out gracefully and stick to custom work.

What is the safe amount of scrypt-only gridseeds to put on a molex line, as well as on SATA? I'm using a CX600.

I'm currently running 10 as:

6 on two PCI-e
2 on the molex line
2 on the sata line

Trying to see how many I can expand to. I know PCI-e can certainly take more. I can probably add a couple of Y splitters on each and get another 6?

Sorry to see you won't be doing these but I've learnt enough from you to do a good enough hack job by now

I would say that you could expand to 6 per molex 'chain' and the same for sata as long as the wire used by the PSU is 18AWG. Give it a look and see what the side of the wire says. If it is 20AWG shoot for 4 max per 'chain'.

This is with your assumption that they pull 10 watts right?
I finally got mine and I am now using an ATX power supply to supply them with power.
what I have noticed:

The regular power supplies really smell fishy/burning.

The gridseeds pull about 8 watts(measured directly on the cable) at 850 clockspeed with the fan on. Without the fan you will probably decrease that to about 6 watts.

The raspberry pi (controller) can also be powered from a molex adapter: just cut open a USB cord and attach the wires correctly.
The USB hub I got uses 5V so you can also power this one by hacking together a cable based on a molex connector.

So according to your question:

Check the wires
If it's 18AWG you can safely pull 60 watts leaving you 20W headroom/safety margin.
So that amounts to 7 units at 8W.
Or 10 units at 6W.

If it's 20AWG the safe wattage is lowered to 40W now with 18W safety margin.
This amounts to 5 units at 8W.
Or 6 units at 6W.

You could totally go higher than these guidances suggest but I am not going to advocate that. I have seen 18AWG hold on 90w for extended periods but have also seen PCIe pins and housings burn at 7A instead of the 9 they are rated for. I am sure the quality of the materials employed also plays a part in durability under stress but that quality can not really be determined without prior experimentation.

The point of failure in any system is always going to be the weakest part, which may not be immediately obvious. It may be the wires dissipating 3w of heat or the pins melting the housings, it may even be the PSU shorting on the modular plate or the miners themselves. What I am trying to say is that downtime in mining is about as bad as it gets and I see no reason to push equipment so close to the breaking point that downtime may be an issue. That is just how I roll.

I had some free time recently and made up some cables for gridseed miners.

The first is a male PCIe to 5 plug power adapter. It is 27in in length with a 5in pitch, perfect for scrypt only gridseeds laid out 5x5. They are $25 each shipped and I have 3 sets right now but can make more easily.


I also have a stash of molex to Raspberry Pi cables available to ship. They are either 12 or 16in in length and are $10 each shipped.


Finally, I have various molex to 2.5mm plug adapters for hubs or controllers, etc. They are 18in in length and can be wired for 5 or 12v as needed. These are $10 each shipped as well.



I am working on another cable variation for gridseeds that is similar to my mass produced idea. As soon as I get it through testing I will put pics and details. Watch this space.

Well I am back with a new version of the gridseed power cable.  It starts with the base cable that will allow for scrypt branches up to 15 units or directly for 3 units to dual mine:
