I want to understand if it's relevant to rent better faster equippement or no matter how many miners as long the total hash is greater...

and for how long....

Well, if you rent 456253.85Ths you should find a block in about 10 minutes.

what's the exact equation you've used to calculate that ?

it is around some where but bitcoinwisdom will give you an idea.

punch in the hash say 15th and you will see you get about .11 btc in a day divide the day rate into 25 and you will see how many days 15th needs to hit a block  about 240.  of course you be lucky and 15th could hit in five minutes. i hit two blocks in under two hours renting five hundred th.  about a six hundred to one shot when i did it.

1- finding a block means get the right side of multi faced dice (number of faces = difficulty)
2- bigger total hash power = more rolls in a definite span of time
3- a newer generation / faster miner should be equal to a equal sum of hash of multiple older gen / slower miners
4- finding a block might take few seconds or way longer....(this would be luck / variance)
and
5- I'm not sure about this; but I think that finding a block is somehow round based ? ie: once someone finds it, the round restarts and everyone starts new round from the scratch....

but 9.5 s-3s doing the same 4860 rolls are equal shot at a block(use more power and more space)

Few month ago i rent some hashrate and pointed to solo.nicehash but i use a wallet address started with 3.
I found a block but unfortunately pool do not accept addresses with 3 that time and create an address and sent fund to this address:

i just came here and ask. maybe after these month someone found a solution to access these coins. just this!
i always pointed my rental hashrate to solo.ckpool but one time i go to "blochchain lottery" in nicehash website and buy a ticket. i didn't have option to set a wallet address and didn't know about three signature address problem. because i saw to block found in blockchain lottery page.

anyway thanks to solo.ckpool and nicehash i found a good amounts of blocks 5 month ago. but because of my family crisis i had to spend all of them. and i am very grateful because if i didn't earn that coins, i have a real problem now!

But i really like to go back to my old game and made some profit if my luck companies me!

There are ways to optimize things, which the hardware manufacturers take advantage of to make faster, more efficient chips.  For example, when trying to calculate the hash, you can stop after a very few number of operations and know for certain that continuing down that path will not lead to a valid answer.  You can build that kind of logic into the chip.  Each manufacturer has their own methods for getting the most bang for the buck from their chips.  Smaller die process, better designs... all play into it.

It's always a fair roll of the dice because of the nature of the cryptography underneath the covers.  You can't "fudge" a valid solution to the problem.  Doesn't matter if you're using pen and paper, or the fastest ASIC on the planet.

What can be done, however, is on the pool side.  Pool operators can fine tune their code to make sure potential block solves are broadcast to the network quickly so they do not produce orphan blocks, and also to make sure all the pool workers get new work quickly and start working on the next block as soon as they can.  This is a significant, measurable attribute that can be the difference between solving a block and not.

It's only a minor gain.
It's an approximate 3% reduction not calculating the full hash in the last few steps of sha256, to just check if it's at least a 1 diff share.
I don't think there would be any bitcoin chip manufacturer who doesn't do this.

I remember one day suddenly realising this one morning when I woke up, about 2 weeks after I found out about bitcoin - 8-Aug-2011 to be exact ... then I posted on the forum asking about it ... only to find eventually that of course the GPU coders already had it in their ocl code

Just picked up and revived the unit from another user, I have one more S4 with a bad beagle board and 2 bad hash boards that I am hoping to fix to use half of the units efficiency.

The one S4 should be sufficient for solo mining, yes?  I realize it has somewhat low odds but I feel the power this baby consumes will not be made up from Slush's pool.

Yes, absolutely. One of my S4's solved a block a few months ago and my s4+ came very close (60G best share) a few weeks ago. Good luck to you!
