you are wrong, the thermal pad can help : vs But, the 1070s are less hungry For MSI, its different, their backplate is isolated and really thin... look like more an useless protection without thermal use (removed it on the 1060 Gaming X)

These aren't even the same cards in the same conditions doing the same things. You can't just post random infrared photos as comparisons. If you had a before and after of the same card doing the same thing I might be obliged. There are so many things wrong with this comparison I can't even cover all of it. -_-

MSI reds and EVGA 5173 suffer from burnouts after about a month of use (around 50% failure rate for both now). Gigabyte has crap fans that crap out within 6-12 months, 15-24 if you run them slow. Zotac two-slot double-fan coolers (forgot the model number). MSI whites seem to work fine, but they also have a TDP of just 108%. I've had absolutely no problems with Asus. Even their shitty white ones, despite them being cheaper and not OCing as well still haven't had problems with them. Haven't tried PNY. Zotac models besides that one are good (besides mini, I'm sure that's just asking for problems). I'm sure you wont have problems with either MSI or EVGA if you run them simply at 100% TDP and not any higher, but if they couldn't handle more then that they shouldn't allow you to run the TDP higher. Gigabyte cards would be great if their fans weren't so bad. Yeah... compared to AMD cards and last gen Nvidia (9XX) besides Gigabyte and their crap fans, I've never had so many problems with video cards while mining. Any of the AMD cards that also had the half height shit fans like Gigabyte went bad (XFX), otherwise no burnouts... regardless of them using more power. Sad that companies that sell a $400 premium product cut corners to save a couple cents on cheaper parts. Appreciate the link to the actual comparison instead of EVGA and then a random Tomshardware link. There is no way to apply a 'back pad' on a card without a backplate, so this isn't comparable though. If there was a backpad and plate, this might work. I assume the front pads also help reduce temperatures in general, but EVGA is definitely still at fault for not doing this first. I never said the pads wouldn't reduce temperatures, just that they aren't there and I'm getting burnouts (as are other people). You can also run your Gigabyte fans at 30% and add more fans to your system to 'fix' their fans going bad, but it doesn't fix the original problem, which is they're broken in the first place. If there was some guarantee that the pads were installed before purchasing the cards I would probably still recommend them and it still doesn't make up for burnouts in the first place, but there is no way to figure out whether or not you're getting old stock with or without the pads installed.

As a addendum, I believe I have one 5173 with the thermal pad installed and it runs ridiculously hot (like MSI temps) and start throttling when mining Equihash. Either that or when it was fixed they didn't apply the thermal paste right, I can't tell which. I'll be able to figure this out once I start getting RMAs back from EVGA.
I'm pretty sure the back burnouts aren't caused by temperatures as much as the components being crap as I mentioned before though and the added stress of memory OCs put them over the edge. The front burnouts are probably exclusively caused by temperatures and lack of thermal pads as they're already under a 'cooling plate' and make no contact with it, so it's just a insulator... especially when combined with dissipating heat from other parts of the card with actual contact to the plate (like other VRMs, memory) it actually increases the temperature of the components that are failing.
EVGA is I believe the only brand to use a front plate. Other manufacturers use heatsinks on various parts of the card or they cover other areas with the actual heatsink, but they don't use a full plate. This in and of itself maybe one of the causes of these burnouts.
Edit: Checked all my cards, MSI and EVGA are the only manufacturers that use full plates to cover the whole underside of their heatsinks. Asus, Zotac, and Gigabyte either use little heatsinks to cover key components or part of the physical heatsink. Guess having airflow is a good idea.

No, I think one of the 5173s I received back didn't have thermal paste applied properly. New one I just got back from EVGA has relatively good cooling like all the other models.
Back to pre-Dec BTC prices... Hopefully this isn't the start of a downhill slope again. We did so well growing slowly in 2016. ~_~

Hello! We are proudly presenting you - open source and free to use CUDA ZEC miner. No limitations ( works on any pool) and no dev fee. We used our first ZEC miner for this purpose - nheqminer - it was forked many times on GitHub and it will be easy for most developers to adopt new solver into their forks. Link: https://github.com/nicehash/nheqminerBins and linux compatibility will be available very shortly. In future, we plan to bring same open approach to AMD card owners with the fastest OpenCL solver. If you appreciate our work and would like to donate, just mine on NiceHash. We request nothing more from you Note to all devs that are eager to include parts of code into their miner: cuda_djezo project is released under GPL 3.0 license, which means that you cannot use this code as a base or parts of the code to create closed source fee based miner. If you do that, you violate license terms.Get to work SP!

You got me, there is no way he can look at their coding, change variables around and simply recode it. XD Putting aside EWBF already having done that.

Nah. Nobody donate when they can download for free any more.
Been sick with fever for more than a week. Probobly the seasonal Flue.
Just tested pentablake sp-mod #3.
The exe from 2015 does 110MHASH on the gtx 1070. With a little pascal tuning I managed 120MHASH
Opensource: 70MHASH.
So My private kernel is +71.4% faster

They'll leave nasty comments anyway, even though devs steal ideas and code base from each other all the time. It's like half of coding. As long as you don't copy paste, it's basically not violating the GPL, that's why it's next to impossible to patent anything in code and/or make a lawsuit out of it. It literally wont ever go anywhere.

If you throw enough money and lawsuits at someone, it's more expensive to try and fight them then settle. It's the unfortunate part of the American legal system. Literally has nothing to do with coding or GPL. It's like getting DDoS'd.
