You're pessimist Mikestang

I have 6 on my RPI Smiley

Block erupters are ok, and for 100$ you can get a bunch Smiley

Mikestang is a realist when he says they suck. Based off what I am reading the au3 is the only miner anyone really has any major complaints about. Wish I would have spent a lot more time than I did researching them before I purchased mine. The purchase would have never happened.

OK what am I missing here? Even if you have 20 Block Erupters you still only have about 7GH/s consuming around 40 Watts. Why would anyone want that when you could have a Compac or R1 with a higher Hash Rate, 1/10 the Power and less money?

What would you consider a good miner? I only want to spend $100-$200 and would like to ditch these au3's for something that I can turn on and forget about.

Get an S3+, it will do 450-500GH/s (depending on clock settings) rock solid for ever and you won't have to do anything for it.  They are right in that price range, including the psu (I have one for sale for an S3 if you need one).

If you want to stay with usb miners then get like 4 compac sticks and run them 15-20GH/s each.  They are great little miners.

I use mine for lotto miners just for fun.  A S3 is a tad big for me on lotto.  I don't like paying electricity very much on lotto miners.

So I have 3 U3's and 7 compacs that make up my lotto miners.  They are working great as of now.  Rest of my miners all mine on pools.

Is there any software I can run that will reset my miners if they go zombie?

CrazyGuy's R1's if you select it come with a custom firmware that does it.

Other's have mentioned a chron job on here (I believe it was crazy guy who put it up, and others just quoted).  But that is other option.   This one I have not seen as much about people doing so might be some more work, but should be doable.

I have done 3 without any issues.  I have not see 7 on it.... but I think it should be able to do it.  Only thing I might suggest is looking at CrazyGuys with the auto zombie fix.  With 7 it will be more important I would think.

Or write your own mod to do it.   But I'm going to say it should... but 3 is my max so I could be wrong.

Yes it has the GUI you would expect from a bitmain product.  It feels like any other product they have.

The main differences I can think of with CrazyGuy's versiion vs original is the zombie fix, easy gui freq on internal chip, and being able to point internal chip to pool of your choice through gui.

But yes very much GUI and easy.

my miners slow down when I use more than two with cgminer. Is that a problem I will have with the r1? I always have to have 4 copies of cgminer open to avoid the slow down....

Did anyone try to mod the U3 for quieter operation? I mean it's not that loud but the sound is quite annoying and I'm considering to do something with it. Maybe replace the fan with a quieter one or replace the whole heatsink with some silent CPU cooler? Of course, I can just move it out of my room but this will require buying a device that'll operate the miner, like R.Pi. So these solutions are almost the same for me in terms of money and effort.

Remove the cage and the fan and put them upside down in shallow container with water ?
(this is a dumb advice, don't do it) Smiley

Probably some non-conductive liquid would do but I don't like the solution Grin

So that:

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1746/duc-38/FrozenCPU_80mm_to_120mm_Blue_UV_Reactive_Fan_Adapter.html?tl=g47c121s262

(there's certainly cheaper elsewhere, that's just what I found first)
Bigger fan = higher cfm and less db.

That means the cage won't fit anymore, and it's going to be higher, but I belive it's an upgrade to be considered.

My 6 U3 are in the garage so noise is not an issue for me.
