it appears the main chain has overtaken the orphaned chain. doesn't that mean the problem is solved? No, its the orphaned chain that needs to take over the main chain.

Because the market is smarter than anyone and knows that if this problem happens once it can happen again and worse. Black day for Bitcoin, but time will heal.

I agree with you sole, I lost quite a bit today. The bigger question is what if bitcoin does go further mainstream and more and more merchants depend on it, our global economy is very frail as it is and I don't think we can afford to overlook the possibility of something like this happening again. : /

Because the market is smarter than anyone and knows that if this problem happens once it can happen again and worse. Black day for Bitcoin, but time will heal. The market will regain confidence once it figures out how awesome it is to be able to really aware of the problem, if it were a bank the investors would have no knowledge until it stinks.

mtgox has not been very transparent recently (same as any other fiat bank), especially since the drop in value today, if mtgox and other trading co. continue to act this way bitcoin will not be able to recover since its value comes directly from people believing in it.

Yep. And if the fx rate stabilizes and begins its normal behavior from $45 then it would seem to have taken only a 5% hit from this experience or $25m off the "market cap". Not too bad...

What investors and "the market" make out of it will depend largely on the media. And i doubt that they will see it the way you and i do. They're gonna have field day calling this a "hack", "crash", "broken system", whatever sounds most dramatic for the actual writers' article. And why wouldn't they? It's a good story, after all. Not necessarily true, but just too good to be wasted. And yes, that will have an impact on the confidence of investors. They may be smart people, but they're also smart enough to not waste their time on really understanding the technicals of their investments.

Yeah, well, I'm gonna go build my own blockchain. With blackjack and hookers! In fact forget the blockchain.
