Very long? Blocks weight about 270 MB only, especially comparing 48 GB of bitcoin-qt or 10 GB LTC and DOGE...
It will be needed, but (near I hope) in future.

Strange, I have the same .conf and have 7-9 connections in a few minutes after opening the prog.
I have alfo over 303.9k downloaded blocks...
Maybe you should delete everything, but wallet and conf and redownload the Amber wallet from the OP?
