Why is that important? What does it matter to you?

If they supply a device which you are willing to pay for, it doesn't matter if it is made with hand soldered discrete transistors on a perf board.
If you buy a BMW and you will deliver a Dacia say the same?
Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Since bitcoin are fungible, it shouldn't matter the type of device used to produce them.  Why is it important?

as long as it preformed to my expectations, it wouldn't matter how it did so. of course, for a dacia to meet the expectations of a BMW... well, the basic functionality might be the same, but not the OTHER expectations.

but an alterra hardcopy with the announced stats vs a true full custom ASIC with the stats? i really don't see the difference. course based on what i've read around these forums, i gather those stats wouldn't be possibly with a hardcopy.

i don't post much, but this space for rent.

Hi BFL_Josh,

Can you provide a copy of the Jalapeno specification?

Thanks.

Here ya go:
http://news.yahoo.com/butterfly-labs-announces-next-generation-asic-lineup-054626776.html

"BitForce SC Jalapeno: a USB powered coffee warmer"

That press release also states:

1)    BitForce SC Jalapeno: a USB powered coffee warmer providing 3.5 GH/s, priced at under $149

I don't know if you noticed that the pre-order price is: $149

So not everything in that press release is true...  Cool

Inflation since the press release makes $149 worth less now than it was then...  Kidding.  Smiley

You mean BFL made a statement which subsequently turned out to be, um, less than accurate?

I don't know if I can go on living after such a disillusionment.

Perhaps I'll have to check myself into a rehab center to get over it.

Four to six weeks should be sufficient.

Sure.

But they will be stale. (Less tasty than advertised.)
And delivered a day late. (four to six weeks == how the hell should I know when)

He who does not know he is a hardcopy report is a bit before saying that no matter the difference between an ASIC and a hardcopy.
The hardcopy is the same bitstream that BFL is now using a cheaper chip with less transistors, surely the idea is to use many of these chips to reach the promised powers.

Nobody has asked if they have developed a single processor ASIC, as can sell a circuit with 3.2 GH / s and another with 40GH / s?Huh?

That means that of 40GH / s use more than one processor, and probably will be small processors that use hardcopy of StratixIII now.

Basically the difference in announcing a Full Custom ASIC and sell a Hardscopy you is not going to do the same function or a lot less, consumption and profitability or performance or approach.

Not trying to convince anyone, I know there's a lot devotee with faith in this forum, it seems increasingly a religion and not a technology forum, hopefully not end up in the Inquisition ...

Sorry if I sound like an ass, but I had to read that like 5 times to get what you're saying.

You think they advertised it as a "Full Custom ASIC", but it's really not?

Sorry, English is not my native language ...

The fact is that we know that BFL uses an Altera FPGA StratixIII more specifically as the friend ngzhang made clear in this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=79825.0

After BFL know that you're running this processor providing cheap as explained ngzhand forum and it turns Altera offers the option to create your own chip from StratixIII bitstream ,do not know why they call this ASIC in Altera http://www.altera.com/products/devices/hardcopy-asics/hardcopy-stratix/hst-index.jsp page when ASIC really not a hardware but a conversion in a bitstream of an FPGA, is much cheaper to produce (about € 300,000) and the result is a chip cheaper than a FPGA and less consumption but with the same performance.

This would solve the lack of supply StratixIII for BFL and would open the door to announce that it is the first manufacturer of ASICs for BTC when Altera misleading advertising is simply a hardcopy of a lifetime.

Personal Opinion ...
