The amount of lost shares in p2pool are normal. And every p2pool miner has the same. So its fair among the p2pool users. Theory: But that means that a certain amount of hashpower is lost compared to solo mining. The shares maybe were good but they are lost and so is the amount of time invested in them. Solution?: Am i right that this is no disadvantage to solo mining because the real bitcoin block that is found in p2pool is directly put into the network via solomining? So the lost shares does not affect in the end because for the real found block those lost shares dont exist. Correct? Then p2pool would be even better than normal pools because they have to receive the found share first and from there propagate it. Sorry for the many questions...  no problem, they are good questions - some are answered in other places but it can be hard to find. Yes, p2pool's internal share chain has lots of stales. But the p2pool network DOES NOT produce more bitcoin chain orphans (and thus wasted work) than solo mining. Work is not lost using p2pool, those stale p2pool shares can still solve a block and still be submitted to the bitcoin network for reward. The time and work invested in them is not lost. Those shares just don't show up in the p2pool sharechain, but will show up in the bitcoin blockchain. The rewards for those blocks are paid out normally to p2pool users and are not wasted. Theoretically, a 100% efficient p2pool miner that has ~5-10% stale/DOA rate will have the exact same expected value as a solominer with the < 0.5% orphan rate. except sometimes those stales that solve blocks... are, well, a stale right after a block was found. re the shenanigans that go on when switching from one block to another not sure if p2pool would proceed along it's own chain or not? either way, it's a block that'll most likely be orphaned. that's when the slow getblocktemplate matters |

It is 87k in size with 588 inputs and fee of 0.0093. This is included if you have mintxfee=0.0001 as fee is over 0.0001*87=0.0087. However we are never going to earn a lot of fees if we include TX's like this as each block could only hold 11 of them for total fees of 0.1BTC! And have latency of 3.3 seconds. Does anyone know where in the code this is? Seems odd that it takes so long. well, you should have less DOA if you set up a local node. you might have some orphans if you';re bandwidth starved (generally upstream if youre in the US), though i couldn't imagine it being much worse than p2pool.org (maybe everyone should start charging a fee, i guess it lends some sort of legitimacy). if you're going to mine on a remote pool, find a better one here http://p2pool-nodes.info/ or here http://p2pool.hostv.pl/ |

The tiered plan here has always had reducing prices the more you use, summer or not
but if you consider the base fee, it probably cancels out a lot of those small increases that are being listed here... like a $20 or $25 meter reading fee

Less perceived anonymity does not create a more viable currency. I don't really care if governments decide to accept Bitcoin or not. If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas. Building bridges between the government and existing financial systems absolutely does create a more viable currency. You SHOULD care if governments accept bitcoins or not because that will have a direct impact on their value and longevity as a storage of wealth. I'm assuming the "dogs" in your comment are supposed to be the governments that track revenues for the sake of collecting taxes? If you currently pay taxes in any way, shape or form you're already "lying down with the dogs" on some level. Might as well be the top dog if you're there. if you're paying taxes and doing it properly, all the gpus, asics and such you buy are tax write-offs. it's not so bad, esp if you are in a high tax bracket |

No you set the difficulty in advance. If you aim for a difficulty 1 share, but get a hash that is good enough for a difficulty 10 share, it still only counts as a difficulty 1 share.
When you get a share, it gets added to the share chain and when the next block is hit, you will get a share of that block's payout.
OK, that makes sense. I thought that p2pool paid out each successful share based on the difficulty of that share itself (how close to zero the hash was), not based on the target difficulty. Interesting how there's still so much variance in the payout table, then: each payout is slightly different, they don't quantize themselves into recognizable patterns. Since there's only 8640 shares, I would think that it would be easy to see groupings in the payout table, but instead, each number is slightly different. Does the target difficulty continuously update itself and change a little each time? Maybe that is why. yes, the difficulty target adjusts based on that particular pools hashrate not sure when the source starts calling for the actual share difficulty to go up, but the pseudo shares used to measure your hash rate start to increase in difficulty somewhere around 5-10ghash? I've always had those, never occurred to me that there was something wrong.  I though it was just part of the way nodes talked to each other. Jumping from 35417e20 to 15364f72! if you go back a few shares, a parent share is 35417e20, not 15364f72. so some node built off of 35417e20, while mine was trying to jump to something else. i guess we've come to the conclusion that the share right before a block "almost always" gets orphaned (35417e20 didn't), and a share directly after a block has a good chance of getting orphaned (i.e. if I had built off of 15364f72, instead of 35417e20) so i guess after taking everyone's hashrate into consideration, you'd want to get your getblocktemplate slow enough to not cause problems. the largest node is private, but you can see on http://p2pool-nodes.info/ that one at 740ghash is *10 seconds behind ed: slightly over 2/3rds of all my orphans are within 30 seconds of a block solve, and, yes, i have logs for this |

For higher hashrate miners, is it suggested to manually set the difficulty in cgminer (with p2pool), or does it not matter?
For example, right now my cgminer instance is running at around 42GH/s. It has set the difficulty to 8. Is there any reason to set it higher than that? Reduced bandwidth/latency? My miners are on the same LAN as my p2pool but a different box.
Every share you send back to p2pool has to be processed by p2pool also. If when you were mining at 1GH/s and 1diff was ok - then now at 42GH/s ... 32diff should be fine and a good reduction in traffic and work for p2pool I don't suppose you know what's going on in the cases I've mentioned earlier, re: 'block punishing'? The prices here are cheaper for business, the base price is actually 0.094848 for residential (plus a $20 meter reading fee every month), but they haven't charged that much in 5 years or something. A portion is deducted based on price the electric company had to pay for electricity (which for my location is 90% natural gas and 10% wind). so here you can see price of natural gas by state: http://www.eia.gov/dnav/ng/ng_pri_sum_a_epg0_peu_dmcf_m.htmtexas isn't the lowest, but, well, texas is pretty big, and it is a lot cheaper in south, SE, NE texas. re: http://www.eia.gov/pub/oil_gas/natural_gas/analysis_publications/ngpipeline/intrastate.htmlso, anyway, i've been paying about 6.5c for electricity, even though it says 9.5c. the base price for industrial is 7.15c, but it comes with a minimum charge of $475. i assume they also get a discount, but maybe not as much. still cheaper, i'm sure there's also a different residential plan, where you get charged a $40 base fee, first 150 kWh x kW x 0.124944 (unadjusted), next 100 kWh x kW x 0.108944, excess kWh x 0.084440 (ed: fixed w/ updated rates), so, yeah, it gets cheaper if you use more |

all that is between that and the found share is a lot of 'punishing' messages. It also had 3 shares with 0 deads for 24 seconds, until someone else found a share (because my node never broadcast it, I think). What's wrong w/ broadcasting a share with 5 transactions? If I set the block max size to 1000, would it have broadcast it?
I am guessing it would have, since there wouldn't have been any new transactions to add?

This one is different because it actually gives me an error message. From what it says, it didn't even broadcast my share? It made new work for the new block @ 2013-08-20 15:16:18.396579 New work for worker! Difficulty: 2.584920 Share difficulty: 23330.319027 Total block value: 25.004000 BTC including 6 transactions all that is between that and the found share is a lot of 'punishing' messages. It also had 3 shares with 0 deads for 24 seconds, until someone else found a share (because my node never broadcast it, I think). What's wrong w/ broadcasting a share with 5 transactions? If I set the block max size to 1000, would it have broadcast it? I am guessing it would have, since there wouldn't have been any new transactions to add? |

I'm not a hobbyist (or ignorant), so I'm not going to waste my money on ASICs that won't turn a profit...
I was thinking that despite changes in the mining economy, Bitcoin can continue to engage members of the community with profitable and/or innovative investment opportunities relating to mining and mining companies. With mining out of the scope of the people's interest, Bitcoin would rely solely on it's application as a payment rail and store of value. As I come full circle I start to think that Bitcoin itself is just the beginning of a money revolution. Regardless, I definitely think a lot of money can be made mining with ASICs, it's just about getting a good price on hardware, and a good price on your bitcoins. Well, sure, I agree with your last statement... but right now there are too many enthusiasts, hobbyists, people with too much money to spend and lack of knowledge/ignorance about the impact of the rising difficulty levels. Maybe in a few months an ASIC might be worth buying. ed: similar to my dart throwing at nasdaq back in the late 90s, then losing 30% of my assets over the course of a week. i guess some people had it worse, those that stuck it out until it finally stopped bleeding in 3q of 2002. gpu mining on ltc is already crap i think people must be ignoring the depreciation in their equipment & valuing their time at $0/hr |
