WoWoWoo!!!

1462  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: What is BIP39 on: March 10, 2023, 10:45:53 PM
Actually before BIP39 there was BIP32 https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0032.mediawiki
BIP32 has been created in February 2012 while BIP39 has been created in September 2013 precisely. And it's BIP32 which introduced/standardized Hierarchical Deterministic Wallets, BIP39 only allowed them to be more easily usable and memorizable by humans. But Bitcoin Core still doesn't use BIP39 seeds for example, only BIP32 ones in WIF format.
is BIP39 is a development from BIP32?, if yes, why they don't continue their development about vulnerability or weakness which was shown by electrum?.

Quote
A fixed wordlist is still required. Following our recommendation, BIP39 authors decided to derive keys and addresses in a way that does not depend on the wordlist. However, BIP39 still requires the wordlist in order to compute its checksum, which is plainly inconsistent, and defeats the purpose of our recommendation. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that BIP39 proposes to create one wordlist per language. This threatens the portability of BIP39 seed phrases.

BIP39 seed phrases do not include a version number. This means that software should always know how to generate keys and addresses. BIP43 suggests that wallet software will try various existing derivation schemes within the BIP32 framework. This is extremely inefficient and rests on the assumption that future wallets will support all previously accepted derivation methods. If, in the future, a wallet developer decides not to implement a particular derivation method because it is deprecated, then the software will not be able to detect that the corresponding seed phrases are not supported, and it will return an empty wallet instead. This threatens users funds.

https://electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/seedphrase.html
Calling that weakness or vulnerability is just a point of view. Because if a BIP39 wallet doesn't support one language, it will just reject the seed because it won't be able to compute and verify the checksum, that's it.
So what's the problem? The purpose of a mnemonic seed is to be easily usable by a human, but if the user doesn't know English, it will be as difficult for him as using an hexadecimal seed. Electrum still only supports english language for seeds currently (except by doing some hacks as told above), while being localizable in many languages, that's neither consistent nor convenient for those users.
For the version number, each time a new format is created like Taproot now, they have to update their system and to hope it wont make bugs when new seeds will be used on older wallets. So I'm not sure it's more safe and convenient.
1463  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can you 'Will' your bitcoin to your children? on: March 10, 2023, 09:59:37 PM
In a case where you have five children and you don't have much physical assets but you have a enough bitcoin that non of your children are aware of it. Now your age is advancing, you begins to prepare "WILL" and there is no way to divide and share bitcoin account to the five children! What will you do? Since non of them are aware.

Can you "WILL" the private key to your favorite child or call them together and reveal the private key to them? Or what will you do?
OK guys is up to you!
The safest and simplest way is IMO to use 5 BIP38 encrypted private keys or 5 mnemonic seed with a password and to leave one different password for each child in your will or to put each password in a sealed envelope for each child that you will leave to a parent. The notary or the parent won't be able to do anything with the passwords because he won't know the encrypted key or the mnemonic seed, but your children will have access to them on your computer. With their password they will be able to try each mnemonic seed/encrypted key to find the one working with their password and belonging to them.
1464  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BIP39 vs Electrum Mnemonic seed on: March 10, 2023, 07:04:02 PM
I read article and watch video that it's stupid idea to split mnemonic seed to different parts because it is bad if one of parts have word for checksum that is useless for wallet recovery.
What do you call a word for checksum that is useless for wallet recovery precisely? All words are needed to recover a wallet actually, so you won't get the same master key if you use a seed without its checksum even if the wallet accepts it like Electrum does. All words are used by the PBKDF2 function to generate the seed. So you will need to compute it again if the checksum is missing. In addition, there is no canonical BIP39 seed with words fully used as checksum because binary seeds must have a multiple of 32 bit seize and the longest checksum is 8bits (for a 256bits seed) while words are 11bits long.
https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039.mediawiki

Do you have links of those articles and videos btw? Because they are mistaken if they are telling that.

1466  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Bitcoin wallet users, have you ever? on: March 09, 2023, 11:38:11 PM
<>
Electrum doesn't operate the servers that displayed those messages and attempted to phish people. Individual users did. I can operate a legitimate server and you can operate a malicious one using the same software client. Those kind of messages can no longer be sent, but I am just saying.

My client broadcasts transactions normally > You configured yours with other motives.
If people who connected to malicious servers paid attention to the what they downloaded, installed, and from where, no money would be lost. If the signatures were verified, they would notice something was off.
Well initially the discussion was about the safety of the Android version vs the desktop one. But now I really wonder how Bitcoin could be widely adopted if people using it need to be IT professionals to avoid being scammed or robbed. How many people on earth know PGP, and know how to check a signature with it? The average Joe will never choose Bitcoin over fiat money if he can't even fully trust error messages from the wallet he is using. Bitcoin is already risky because it's a highly volatile asset, it doesn't need to be also risky when we are using it. Victims shouldn't always be blamed, softwares need to be adapted to users first, not the opposite.
1467  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BIP39 vs Electrum Mnemonic seed on: March 09, 2023, 06:01:18 PM
In the same way, you should avoid to tell in the Beginners & Help section that a 2 words seed could very well be a BIP39 seed using a different wordlist
I never said any such thing. I have been very clear in my replies in this thread that generating your own seed phrase or wallet as OP has suggested is highly insecure.

This part of Electrum which allows you to recover non-standard seed phrase, is exactly that - a recovery tool. At no point does Electrum generate insecure seed phrases, nor even allow you to generate BIP39 seed phrases at all, valid or otherwise. There is no telling what errors or bugs other poorly coded wallets have implemented, and it is not Electrum's responsibility to police them, especially for a seed phrase system it doesn't use and in fact recommends against using. The whole point of Electrum allowing you to proceed with invalid checksums, unknown wordlists, wrong number of words, etc., is to allow people to attempt to recover such invalid seed phrases which other bad wallets have generated, or that they themselves have manually generated badly.
You are maybe right, they maybe see this "feature" as a so called "recovery tool" but unfortunately it's not written anywhere in the messages displayed and they are not ashamed to call "BIP39" any random string with any random characters. The warning message below the text box doesn't talk about their lax "recovery" policy, it just talks about their own safety standard and version number system.
After undergoing a long attack that made many victims, they could be more cautious of their users, especially the less educated ones IMO.
It's nice to be able to create a mnemonic seed with a huge entropy with only few words, but without any warnings it could lead to the opposite as in the case above.

Quote
Warning: BIP39 seeds can be imported in Electrum, so that users can access funds locked in other wallets. However, we do not generate BIP39 seeds, because they do not meet our safety standard. BIP39 seeds do not include a version number, which compromises compatibility with future software. We do not guarantee that BIP39 imports will always be supported in Electrum.
1468  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Bitcoin wallet users, have you ever? on: March 09, 2023, 04:30:38 PM
You're wrong actually, I've never heard of a massive hack of the Android version while the desktop version has undergone an attack during several years causing many people to lose their funds because of it unfortunately.
Sad and avoidable? Yes. Was it a hack? No. Electrum allowed the people operating servers to send messages to those connected to them. That feature was abused to trick people into downloading fake software. You lost your coins if you used the fake software. Nothing happened to people that didn't use the fake apps. Hence, it's not a hack.

Imagine if theymos allowed Bitcointalk members to post random messages in a new chat feature or a notification bar at the top of the forum. If someone posts a link to an official Bitcointalk mobile app ver. 1.0, and 50 users download it and lose access to their Bitcointalk accounts, that's not a forum hack.
So how would you call that? A sad and avoidable but normal behavior for a software wallet? I disagree with you because here the messages were error messages displayed by Electrum software on the computer of the victims, after victims have broadcasted transactions, moreover the transactions were rejected by the servers. So we are not talking about random messages displayed on a random website or a forum here. We are talking about a weakness of a software exploited by malicious people. This is more serious than a common phishing attack for me.

I'm a little confused and wonder why there are gamblers who want to place bets on the Oscars.
It's just an event to give awards to several well-known actors and accomplished actors.
Is there any particular excitement to betting on the Oscars and does it have a greater return?
It also seems that not many gamblers are interested in Oscars bets, so is there any advantage that Freebitcoin can get by holding Oscars bets.
I can say that because indeed in the country where I live and my environment it is not very popular with such bets like Oscars bets
I understand perfectly if someone is following movie scene that they want to use their insights to win money.
But at the same time i also am pretty sure that's rigged. I am not sure how though, maybe if it's politically in a right place considering the current political atmosphere.

And i am guessing everyone even remotely connected to the event are not eligible to make any bets on it. Just like in boxing etc, it's illegal for a boxer to take a dive for a relative who bet him doing so in 2nd round or something like that. Even though it could be highly lucrative to have insight information about this.
Several thousands of members are voting, the ballot is secret and made online, so it would be very hard to rig the process. For being able to make inside bets you would need to know several dozens of random members that accept to tell you their actual votes, and it would only be a rough survey at the end.

Quote
Finals voting is also conducted online. During finals, all Oscar categories are on the ballot for voting members.
After final ballots are tabulated, only two partners of PricewaterhouseCoopers know the results until the famous envelopes are opened onstage during the Oscars telecast.

The current crypto crunch mechanics is a bit inferior to the Bitcasino Road to riches tournament which is the crypto crunch tournament counterpart. I just hope that they will adjust the rules because many players on Livecasino is playing live games. I rarely play slot these days due to my bad luck.
There must be a reason why Livecasino decide to change the rules and lowered down the prize for the crypto crunch tournament.
If I have to guess, perhaps the reason is because the statistic for all the past crypto crunch tournament shows that there were more slot players compared to live casino players.
Anyway although I'm a slot players, but I have never participated in this crypto crunch tournament since it is a wagering contest which is not my thing.
Dont lose a hope, maybe after several more tournament, Livecasino will have crypto crunch for Live Casino games only.

I don't understand what you mean, why it would be a problem if there were more slot players than table games ones in this tournament? Slots used to pay 2x times more than live table games in this tournament actually, it means they wanted to favor slot players IMO. Now only wagering on slots gives points, it means table games players can't participate anymore. On the other hand table game tournaments don't give points anymore to slot gamblers. Tournaments are separated now.

Read more about it from here: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039.mediawiki

To know more about hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet: https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook/blob/develop/ch05.asciidoc

BIP39 is the mnemonic code or seed phrase that was introduced which can be used to generate keys and addresses which gives rise to child keys. Before in non HD wallets, only the individual child keys are used individually as backup, unlike the 12 to 24 words (the seed phrase) that can be used now to generate the child keys.
Actually before BIP39 there was BIP32 https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0032.mediawiki

1477  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Trust wallet update on: March 05, 2023, 09:28:14 PM
Bluewallet and Electrum are just Bitcoin wallets, they are not usable to store altcoins and NFT as Trustwallet, so I don't think it will satisfy OP needs. I know many people don't like Trustwallet very much because it's not fully open source but unfortunately I don't know another wallet accepting such amount of different cryptocurrencies and being so widely used and reputed. So if you don't want to leave your cryptos on custodial platforms, there is not many alternatives unfortunately.
What you are talking about is true, but I am not talking about altcoins or NFTs for using Bluewallet and Electrum because everyone already knows very well that their use is only for bitcoins. For Altcoin and NFT storage solutions, it looks like Trezor and Ledger can be tried. But I personally have never tried it and there is no ability to explain the advantages and disadvantages of any wallet due to the lack of knowledge regarding.

Or am I missing something with Trezor and Ledger hardware ?
They are hardware wallets while OP is looking for an alternative to a (free) mobile wallet, so I don't think it would be an usable choice for him unfortunately, because it's not the same thing. In addition Trezor doesn't seem to be able to manage NFTs on its own. You need to use Metamask with it for that purpose https://blog.trezor.io/how-to-use-nfts-with-a-hardware-wallet-9b4308397ea7
On top of that some people don't like very much hardware wallets because you need to give your physical address when you purchase them online, while Ledger's customers database had already been hacked and leaked online 2 years ago. They are also not very solid and you need to buy another device when they break down.

It looks like it will be a tight competition to be able to get into the rewarding bracket of the Weekly Crypto Crunch tournament.  Price total is indeed halved, it used to be $3000 but changed to $1500 now.  The rank with reward is also trimmed down to 20.  This will be harder for me to get into the rewarding bracket because most of the time, I often place in the bracket of 21 - 30 ranking.
Same for me, but at least all big bettors on live table games will be removed, it's a competition between slot gamers only now. I'm not sure I'll be able to participate though because 2 days remain and you already need to wager more than 17mbtc to catch the last place. It won't be easy IMO.

Indeed, there have been updates on several pages this week especially for computer version, one of which is the Crypto Crunch Tournament page only the top 20 players are shown and I also don't know if only the top 20 players will get the prize, have you checked?
Yes bro, the prize pool is now 1500 USDT and if you add up the prizes dedicated to each of the 20 positions you will find $1500 :
20 - 16 : 5 x 20 USDT
15 - 11 : 5 x 25 USDT
10 - 6 : 5 x 50 USDT
5 - 4 : 2 x 75 USDT
3 : 1 x 125 USDT
2 : 1 x 250 USDT
1 : 1 x 500 USDT

Thanks, I manage to play a little bit of Blackjack but it took me some time to find a table with active dealer. I really hope that this provider will improve their feature by removing inactive dealer or have a feature to sort offline & online dealer. I didn’t saw that green light the first time I manage to open this provider which makes me check all the table one by one to finally play with live dealer.

It’s just odd that you can still play on their table with or without a dealer. I try to request a certain dealer and wait for a minutes but no appearance at all. This makes this provider a turn off for me because they display tons of table despite no active dealer on most of it unlike evolution that all tables has active dealer with or without customer.
I agree with you, they have to improve several things, especially the number of dealers available if they want to attract players.
BTW you should be careful of the new rules of the crypto crunch tournament if you haven't noticed them yet, they have been changed. Now, only the wagering amount on slots counts for the score. The prize pool has been divided by 2 and only the 20 first positions are rewarded.

Unfortunately you won't be able to do that for the march month, because bets on Bitcoin, Ethereum and FUN tokens aren't available while we are already the 4th march. Usually they open bets before the month starts so it's sad but we certainly won't be able to bet on cryptocurrencies price this month. There is also no market available for the first Grand prix of the Formula 1 season, the Bahrain one, so I'm afraid it won't be a very exciting month for bettors unfortunately.
@Saint-loup yea those bets are yet not live on the site yet, that doesn’t mean that they’ll not be live we just need to give Freebitco team some more time. Lastly in the meantime there’re many sports bets available on the site, plus there’re the Oscar bets too which one should definitely try their luck with as wagering on the Oscars is kinda easy when you do the right research.
I don't think they will add them this month to be honest because we are the 5th march and usually bets on cryptocurrencies close about 10 days before the end of the month IIRC. It means only 15 days would be remaining so it would be the shortest opening time I would have ever seen for those bets. Regarding Oscars it's sad they haven't attracted much people so far, 0.03 BTC of prize pool that's very low comparing with the other markets, I wonder if people claiming them to be added have finally place bets.
