1541  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Inactive BTC whale transfers $8M worth Bitcoin After 10 years Inactivity on: April 22, 2023, 01:31:35 AM
Who would know? Your guess is as good as mine. It's possible that the owner has finally just gained access to it. Or he/she finally decided to move the funds to a much safer storage, or perhaps even sell them.

But this isn't new. Every once in a while there's a dormant wallet that suddenly becomes active after a decade or even more. I think it was last year when a wallet containing hundreds of Bitcoin suddenly woke up after 11 years. The last time the wallet was active was when Satoshi was still active.
1542  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Suspected Tornado Cash (Ethereum mixer) developer arrested on: April 21, 2023, 03:12:22 AM
Update:

According to some news sources, the Court has ruled that the Tornado Cash Developer be released, but he will be under house arrest.
- From next week he will continue to be monitored and under home arrest.

- A court panel in the Netherlands had previously rejected the bail.

The developer of Tornado Cash reportedly received some kind of redress from a Dutch court. From the beginning of next week on, he will continue to be monitored and under home arrest. No official accusations have been brought against Alexey Pertsev, who has been in pre-trial custody since August.

I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that these guys had all the guts to arrest the Dev. Dick move IMO.

Dick move, of course, but at least the developments are seemingly in his favor. Little victories are seen. A house arrest is a lot better than being jailed, and only for pre-trial. If a house arrest, even bail, is afforded to the fraud Sam Bankman-Fried, I guess it is the more reasonable that it is also granted to Alexey Pertsev. After all, Alexey Pertsev just wrote a code that is open for everybody to use. Unlike Sam Bankman-Fried, Pertsev is not directly running a fraudulent company himself.
1543  Economy / Exchanges / Re: SEC wants to regulate DEXs on: April 21, 2023, 02:42:16 AM
It's funny how the SEC wants to regulate this and that when in fact it hasn't clearly defined terms yet. The chairman cannot even give an unequivocal answer whether Ethereum is a security or not. And that's in front of legislators. And yet the agency has already been doing probes, imposing fines, threatening with lawsuits despite the lack of clarity. They're even in conflict with another regulatory body. I guess before enforcement, official and detailed guidelines and specific rules and definitions should clearly be set first. How do they even define decentralized?
1544  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin's Volatility Problem on: April 21, 2023, 01:37:59 AM
You must have read this elsewhere. But these are indeed legitimate concerns. Although there certainly are advantages and disadvantages of Bitcoin's volatility and decentralization, certain disadvantages are a hindrance for its adoption. In addition to your example, we have also heard of people who accept salaries in Bitcoin. I reckon that these people are not completely dependent on their regular salaries. Or even if they are, their salaries are huge enough that they have enough savings and they need not convert their salaries immediately to fiat. To those who are completely dependent on what they receive weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly, however, it could happen that as soon as they convert their salary to fiat, it has already lost 5%.
1545  Economy / Gambling / Re: Without money, does it still qualify as gambling? on: April 21, 2023, 01:12:05 AM
I haven't heard of it, but the way you explain it, it doesn't appear gambling to me. If you all you need to do is predict, then you are not gambling at all. If you do not pay or if you don't buy a ticket or some kind of token that is convertible to money, then it isn't gambling. You are not risking anything. It is like a free raffle or contest or a giveaway.

I remember the Bitcoin price prediction game of El duderino_ before. Participants don't have to pay anything. All they have to do is predict. If they win, they will receive Bitcoin. That wasn't gambling. This is the same.
1546  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why do you favor betting on spesific sport? on: April 20, 2023, 04:15:44 AM
I don't bet randomly on sports. If I were to bet randomly, I'd be gambling on dice, slots, roulette, and other similar casino games. Sports betting, on the other hand, is not luck-based. It is gambling with stats and other information at hand. Bets on sports games are informed bets. So if I were to bet on sports games, I'd be betting on those that I am most familiar of. If I bet on sports games that I don't know of, then I'm like betting randomly, only relying on luck for my wins.
1547  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is going down. on: April 20, 2023, 03:25:56 AM
Inflation is still high, interest rates are still getting higher, FED is not planning to stop any time soon, and the economy is suffering. All these reasons won't let Bitcoin rise from the ashes YET.

What might happen in my opinion is because we are about to face the Muslim Eid so it is possible that many people are liquidating their bitcoins for celebration.

Quote
The government sold it on cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase – just like millions of other crypto traders, who have been characterized as 'degenerates' and basement-dwelling geeks in the past three years since digital currencies took off in popularity.

The only difference was size. The government's transaction was for 9,861 Bitcoin, sold for a total $215,738,155.

'There remains approximately 41,490.72 BTC, which the Government understands is expected to be liquidated in four more batches over the course of this calendar year,' Felton wrote in a sentencing memo for Zhong filed on March 31.

Hmm, could it be that this has something to do with Bitcoin struggling to keep above the $30k?

All this I've read today. These are all speculations. There are certainly many more of them trying to explain why the price of Bitcoin is going down. Well, for all we know, Bitcoin's price is always rising and falling.

Notwithstanding all of this, however, I advice that if you have the money, use a portion of it to buy now. People were bearish when Bitcoin's price climbed all the way to $30,000. People then turned bullish, and the price fell to $28,000. Nobody can make accurate predictions. Start averaging now.
1548  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Largest Option Exchange Deribit will launch zero-fee spot trading on: April 20, 2023, 02:42:05 AM
With this, Deribit is effectively upping the ante in the competition for a larger market. Also, the spoils of FTX's collapse have possibly yet to be completely gathered by a competing exchange. They must have also learned lessons from Binance when it also offered its own zero-fee trading. There was a surge in volume for Binance because of that. The effect was also noticeable when the zero-fee trading expired. Although Deribit only offers three trading pairs for this, they did mention that this will continue in the foreseeable future.
1549  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Who is Bitcoin.org on: April 20, 2023, 02:11:04 AM
OP, almost all of your posts here are about attempts to scam you.

My suspicion is that you are hunting for free coins or any kind of Bitcoin giveaway. Because of this, and since many, if not all, of these Bitcoin giveaways are scam, you fell victim to a number of them. I also suspect that you readily give away personal details to these scammers with the hope that you will receive free coins.

I suggest that you stop hunting for free coins. Stop signing up for giveaways. Stop chasing all kinds of promos; they're mostly fake, baits, fraudulent schemes. You need to stop this madness.

I hope I'm wrong!
1550  Economy / Economics / Re: Look for what to invest, not what to eat on: April 20, 2023, 01:36:14 AM
I'd rather not judge them. They might be in a very bad situation.

What I can only speak of are those instances that I know about. And I know well enough how people here in my place could end up selling properties just to have money. Whether it is for food or for something else is sometimes not the question. Indeed, many oftentimes miss the bigger picture in the pursuit of immediate gratification.

I have an aunt who is not used to not having enough money, so as soon as she's almost out of money, she will start to plan which property she's going to sell next. Her father has a vast amount of land. Today, she's almost drained of properties to sell. And she's already old and has developed illness.
1551  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Geeky crypto thief, 32, jailed for hiding $3billion in Bitcoin in popcorn tin on: April 20, 2023, 01:16:22 AM
I think I have already responded to this same story, although in the economics section. This is not breaking news. This happened at least a week ago.

What surprised me was that this Zhong was only sentenced for a year even if he stole a staggering $3 billion in Bitcoin. I don't know how many cases he is facing, but I hope this one-year sentence is only for wire fraud to which he pleaded guilty. There might be others. I read somewhere that he is also involved in illegal drugs.
1552  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Can i make 100 $ daily from online casinos on: April 20, 2023, 12:51:24 AM
If you are earning from affiliate programs of casinos, then it could be possible that you will make an average of $100 per day. But if you are a plain gambler targeting $100 per day, I doubt you could make it. Between a gambler and the house, there is not even a fair equation. The house is always a step ahead. Although there are times when you get lucky and win against the house, in the long run, it will always be the house that prevails.

And, of course, casinos are not a place to make a living. They are more of a place to squander money.
1553  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can Cryptocurrency Owners Become Insolvent? on: April 19, 2023, 08:03:26 AM
No, they're not necessarily different. Insolvency happens when a company does not have enough funds to pay to their creditors. And that happens to cryptocurrency as well. It happened a number of times. Try searching for the latest bankruptcies that happened in the crypto industry and you will realize that it is no different.

Things would only be different if you and you alone own and control your private keys. Meaning, you do not deposit your cryptocurrencies in centralized exchanges and in any custodial wallets. Otherwise, insolvency could happen.
1554  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Overview Of Bitcointalk Contests And Giveaways on: April 19, 2023, 07:30:00 AM
This kind of thread will only serve its purpose if there is commitment, if it is regularly updated. If not, this will just be forgotten like many other overview or compilation threads that came before this.

Anyway, I agree with noorman0 that review campaigns are neither contests nor giveaways. Furthermore, contests that have ended don't have to stay on the list. After all, your heading is "All Available Contests." The list would also grow too long if it always includes those that have already ended.

Also, this list seems to specify only those offered in the services section. Most of the giveaways, however, are posted in the games and rounds. There are also those in the collectibles section.
1555  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitrue exchange hacked for $23 million on: April 19, 2023, 06:59:10 AM
I never understand why people use exchanges with such a worst rating. Bitrue wasn't even a Top 20 exchange according to CoinMarketCap: https://coinmarketcap.com/rankings/exchanges/
It's at #22 as of this post and I am sure this hack will take it to below #30 in a day or so.

Surprise! Surprise! I'm not saying that Coinmarketcap's exchange ranking is to be trusted, but 5 days after the hack, not only has Bitrue avoided falling below rank 30, it has even ranked up actually. As of this posting, Bitrue is already at rank 21.

Again, I'm not saying Coinmarketcap is worth trusting, but even exchanges like YoBit, HitBTC, and others which are not among the top 50 in the site's ranking and whose reputation is certainly questionable, still maintains tens, even hundreds, of millions in daily volume.
1556  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I need help on: April 19, 2023, 06:14:03 AM
Well, for as long as the price is right, it doesn't matter whether the contract is to be settled in Bitcoin or fiat. Personally, though, I'd be happy if I'm paid in Bitcoin. But it is also possible that some wouldn't be happy about it especially if they're not familiar with Bitcoin. Also, payment in Bitcoin comes with additional responsibilities. And if you need to spend the money paid to you right away, then expect to do a few tasks in converting your Bitcoin into fiat.

I suggest that you familiarize yourself with Bitcoin first before accepting it as payment.
1557  Economy / Economics / Re: Why America Can Be The Biggest Economy In The World? on: April 19, 2023, 05:55:58 AM
The massive growth of the American economy started during the industrial revolution in the 1800s. The standard of living of average Americans shot up with the mechanization of the different production processes in the country. The output has made a huge leap thanks to the technologies and modern machineries that made production tasks a lot easier and faster. But besides the modern tools that helped a lot in the economic growth of the country, the US is also endowed with abundant natural resources.
1558  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Researching the Early Days of Bitcoin on: April 19, 2023, 05:21:38 AM
In this forum, I recommend that you go straight to the accounts of Satoshi and Hal Finney and Adam Back and all those who played very important roles in the early formation years of Bitcoin.

And then there's also Satoshi Nakamoto Institute. You will find there the cryptography mailing list emails. You have to remember that this forum came a bit late. When Satoshi first brought up the idea of Bitcoin, it was through this email.
1559  Economy / Gambling / Re: Anyone remember trueflip.io casino? on: April 19, 2023, 04:59:37 AM
The casino is a little bit familiar. Off the top of my head, the thing that I can immediately remember of Trueflip is their dolphin logo colored blue. I can't be sure if I ever played in their site but I remembered visiting it a few times.

But one of the things that discourage me in a crypto casino is when they offer their own token. This approach really doesn't appeal to me. There were a number of crypto casinos back in 2017 which conducted their own token offering. Edgeless was one of them. I think not many of them achieved great success.
1560  Economy / Economics / Re: Does Banks really manipulates us? on: April 16, 2023, 11:22:09 AM
Yes, they do. We only have to realize that the banks are lending to their users their users' own money. And that comes with interest. The banks are also investing their users' money and grow rich from it.

The depositors are also charged for entrusting their own money to the banks, which the banks, in turn, risk to make profit. The banks are also imposing fees if the depositors are withdrawing their very own money. Sometimes, they even refuse to give the money to their owners. And when the money kept by the depositors are running out, they even charge another fee for it, and even freeze the accounts if there is no activity.

I was offered for a loan by my bank. The reason is simply that I have a good amount of deposit in it. I told the manager I don't need money. She told me, you can have it as additional savings. Months and years passed and my account is almost drained out. There's no more offer of a loan.
