1341  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is digital currency powerful? on: May 31, 2023, 04:02:12 AM
In this age of internet, transactions are done online and across the globe. That includes payments. The global E-Commerce market is in the trillions of US dollars. The growth is fast. It is expected to grow even bigger in the coming years. That countries have their own local currencies is a bit of a hindrance. There is a need for a native internet money.

Moreover, even in physical stores and shops and markets, payments are made online. This is how powerful a digital currency could be.

And when it comes to the best digital currency out there, nothing comes close to Bitcoin. Indeed, it's the only digital currency that you can fully own and control.
1342  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bybit is the next to exit Canada, stating regulatory reason on: May 31, 2023, 03:32:27 AM
Yeah, it's either they comply and stay or not and leave.

Another country bites the dust hehe.

In any case, does anyone know what specific law or rule that caused exchanges to completely close their service from Canada? This appears to be something stricter and more aggressive than what the US SEC are doing under their jurisdiction.

It might also be that those exchanges need to have a .ca domain with the users under the Canadian jurisdiction separated from the international crypto market very much similar to the .us domains. I shake my head. I reckon this restricts borderlessness, another innovation that the cryptospace has brought us.

Here's the discussion about it. Basically, it's the enhanced pre-registration undertaking and some more rules such as the prohibition of leverage trading and the use of stablecoins.

In fairness, while OKX and Binance and Bybit didn't make it or at least didn't file for registration under the new measures, Bitbuy, Coinsquare, Fidelity, and others have already gotten their registrations. Kraken, Coinbase, Crypto.com, DigiFinex, Gemini, and others have already made the necessary filings.

All in all, I guess more can be said about those exchanges that didn't take the necessary steps to get registered than those that complied.
1343  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Exchanges X Canada on: May 31, 2023, 03:02:46 AM
I think the only exchange that will really comply to regulations is Kraken

https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2023/03/30/crypto-exchange-kraken-commits-to-tougher-rules-in-canada/

I don't know why the other big crypto exchangers don't want to comply with the laws to operate legally if this continues we gonna experience a monopolized market. There is no competition between exchangers, we are going to experience shitty services with no big developments.

No, there are already more than 10 "crypto trading platforms authorized to do business with Canadians."

In my post above, I linked the exchanges that have already complied with the enhanced pre-registration undertaking (PRU), those that didn't and are therefore banned, and those that have already filed their PRUs and are awaiting decision.

"Payward Canada Inc. et al operating as Kraken" has already filed its PRU and is awaiting approval along with Coinbase, Crypto.com, DigiFinex, Gemini, and others.

With this, it isn't true that "other big crypto exchangers don't want to comply with the laws to operate legally" and that there will be a monopoly in the Canadian market resulting to "shitty services with no big developments." There will be competition, tight competition.
1344  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OCC recommend banks to offer private key vaults to customers on: May 31, 2023, 02:25:29 AM
If it's a physical vault, I actually don't mind keeping my encrypted private keys in there. I can also pay an insurance for it depending on how much value I declare. It's fire-proof. It's locked. It has alarms. I guess a bank vault would be much safer than keeping 3 written copies of your seed phrase somewhere in the house. If you are keeping a copy of your seed phrase at the back of a painting, underneath your table, or in a plastic bag a foot below the ground in your backyard, I think a bank's vault is better.

Can the value of something you deposit in a bank safe be insured at all? As far as I know, banks don't want to know what you keep there, and neither do clients want to declare the value of something that is there. In addition, in the event that thieves break into the bank and take all the contents of the safes, you have lost everything there, and you cannot prove that there was a seed there that gives you access to x BTC.

It's a bit complicated. Definitely, FDIC or the bank's insurance don't cover it. But it can be insured. I'm not aware of the specifics, though.

In the event of a bank theft or robbery, then the insurance activates. I'm pretty certain it covers such incidents.

Theft and robbery on bank's safety deposit boxes happen once in a blue moon. The same can't be said about residences.

Quote
I would still believe more in my own insurance of such sensitive information, and if you do everything right and keep your mouth shut, then the risk is minimal even when and if thieves come into your living space. If someone already chooses a safe in a bank, then it makes sense to keep part of the seed in a private location, and part in the bank, so the risk is lower.

In addition to keeping our mouth shut, perhaps time will come when we might even do away with Bitcoin stickers, Bitcoin paintings, Bitcoin mugs, and anything that gives the robber an idea that we have Bitcoin. If the robber knows that you have Bitcoin, it doesn't anymore matter where you hide your seed phrase in your house. He/she only has to cut your finger to have it.
1345  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Will You Allow To Undergo Hypnosis If A Professional Recommend To Cure Gambling on: May 31, 2023, 01:50:49 AM
I'd say maybe. Of course, there probably are a number of approaches in treating gambling addiction. I will probably have to listen to different professional recommendations first and weigh in on which treatment I prefer.

Personally, however, I'm interested in hypnosis. I'm curious about it. I haven't even known a friend or a loved one who has undergone such process. Perhaps there is also a very limited number of professional psychologists here who have the expertise to use it as a therapy.

Hello! Welcome to the forum! You signing up is already significant enough. It means another individual has taken the initiative to try to understand Bitcoin. I am seeing it this way. Since you're a newbie both to the forum and to Bitcoin, it isn't expected from you to share deep knowledge on Bitcoin. You are here to gain some. I guess it is enough for you to enjoy exploring the forum, read enriching discussions, and perhaps raise some clarificatory questions later.
1347  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin price is always affected by world market news, why ??? on: May 31, 2023, 12:47:02 AM
Sometimes it does; sometimes it doesn't. The price of Bitcoin doesn't always follow the world market news. Although we cannot treat Bitcoin as if it is completely indifferent to the global traditional economy, the correlation isn't a complete one. You just have to look back at the news in the recent weeks, particularly when giant banks are falling one after another. It is symptomatic of a worse problem in the market and yet Bitcoin moved in a direction towards a negative correlation.

1349  Economy / Exchanges / Re: I've lost $10 when depositing to OKX (formerly OKEx) on: May 29, 2023, 01:57:01 AM
This is the story of OKX, but this isn't a story exclusive to OKX. This is also the story of Binance, KuCoin, Huobi, and the rest of the centralized exchanges. Therefore, switching to another exchange which is also centralized might not really be of help.

https://www.okx.com/support/hc/en-us/articles/360021813691-Terms-of-Service

Above is OKX's terms of service. All other centralized exchanges must have terms similar to this.

Regardless, however, you contact the exchange's support and provide details. They might help you.

I guess we're just looking for someone to blame with our negligence of checking everything first before doing a transaction. This is a norm for most exchanges that we check first the minimum deposit/withdrawal amount before doing anything just to make things comfortable for ourselves.

I don't know if it's still negligence on the part of the user not to "frequently review" the terms for certain changes. OKX's terms of service was last updated 2 weeks ago. It might again be updated a couple of weeks later, and then another couple of weeks later, and so on. Is it fair to expect users to read the kilometric terms of service every once in a while? Have you done it?

OP checked the limits but then it changed, and there was no communication whatsoever informing him/her of that. But the terms say that it is enough that OKX change the "last updated" date in providing notice of the changes. To me, this isn't fair.
1350  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin or banking investment? on: May 28, 2023, 04:44:50 AM
I actually wouldn't mind having both, but with how much a bank can give you versus how much Bitcoin could give you in terms of profit, I'd rather take the risk and focus my money more on Bitcoin. Secondly, fiat is fast losing value. What you can earn from your bank investments could easily be made worthless by the inflation rate.

This is not to mention the non-numerical side of things. Bitcoin is a lot interesting beyond the numbers. That it's trustless, immutable, censorship-resistant, and so on also matter a lot. They all play a role in the decision-making.
1351  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why choosing instant withdrawal casinos on: May 28, 2023, 04:07:22 AM
Indeed this is a reason why instant withdrawal should be implemented by casinos or any gambling platform. I have experienced this myself a number of times during the height of the pandemic when the online cockfighting here in my country was very popular. Whenever you want to withdraw it will have to be approved by an agent. The agent may not be around all the time. You could be waiting for hours. So while waiting the tendency is to place bets. And, many times, the end is you lose all your money.

But I think there's not much reason needed. Instant withdrawal is obviously the more convenient or better feature so why not implement it?
1352  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do not rely on articles as resources to learn Bitcoin on: May 28, 2023, 03:42:59 AM
Bitcoin.com of course is not to be trusted. The likes of Cointelegraph and other crypto-related online publications are also known for publishing articles which are either incomplete or substandard or misleading. I think it's primarily because the contributors or writers themselves are not experts or authorities on what they write, or perhaps they lack research. I don't know if the editors are doing their jobs or whether they're competent enough to screen article pieces.

So I guess it's better to be personality-centered in terms of what to read or perhaps watch or listen to. Andreas Antonopoulos is probably one among the authorities. There's also Jameson Lopp or the various Bitcoin developers. They may disagree with each other but at least you know you're reading the ideas and opinions of individuals who really know what they're talking about.
1353  Economy / Economics / Re: South Africa in trouble. on: May 28, 2023, 02:13:08 AM
It is very possible. And it won't be surprising at all. On the contrary, South Africa secretly sending weapons and ammunitions to Russia is even quite expected. They're members of the same gang. And the country is obviously showing which side she is on. She's not hiding it. She's with China and Russia and the rest of the BRICS gang. Not only is the country a member of the group since 2010, it is the current chair and will host the BRICS summit this year. South Africa also abstained in the UN vote last year regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

However, I doubt if the country is afraid of being sanctioned by the US. The country seems to feel confident, safe and secure with China and Russia's group.
1354  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Adoption Campaign on: May 27, 2023, 04:19:04 AM
That's cute. We're trying to promote Bitcoin in our own little ways. But, of course, I'm appreciating this not really as a way for people to invest in Bitcoin, but as a way for them to get curious about it.

I think so too, it's like the bitcoin van that can arouse people's curiosity. What can happen is that from that curiosity, someone who manages to fill the piggy bank will finally use that money to buy bitcoin, but that will also depend on where the OP lives and how easy it is to convert cash to bitcoin, depending on the politics and services of the place.

I hope for a deeper impact. I hope the curiosity will move them beyond merely buying Bitcoin. This isn't just buy Bitcoin or invest in Bitcoin. That probably has a rather selfish or self-serving motive. After all, the primary reason why we want everybody else to buy Bitcoin is for the price to rise. This is probably what's at the back of our minds, that this scarce coin would get more expensive as the demand grows. But I think the kind of revolution that Bitcoin starts is for freedom in money.
1355  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 51% attack on Bitcoin on: May 27, 2023, 03:03:43 AM
As others have mentioned, you would need north of $10 billion to at least achieve 51% of the mining hash rate. But I think this isn't the point. There are individuals, families, companies, banks, governments, and so on who have way more than $10 billion. They can afford to achieve that 51%. As a matter of fact, GHash.io once achieved 55% of Bitcoin’s hash rate. But the question is why would somebody invest so much money to attack Bitcoin? The key takeaways are that [1] it's not going to be profitable, so if it's for the money, it would be absurd, and then [2] it would only be temporary, quick; the takeover won't last forever, so if it's to destroy Bitcoin, it would also be absurd. So, what's the point? I think there's none.
1356  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Adoption Campaign on: May 27, 2023, 02:10:50 AM
That's cute. We're trying to promote Bitcoin in our own little ways. But, of course, I'm appreciating this not really as a way for people to invest in Bitcoin, but as a way for them to get curious about it. This isn't really an initiative to directly bring awareness to people; this is rather a way for people to simply encounter Bitcoin. And perhaps from that point, they would develop a certain thirst to know and understand this new technology. Small Bitcoin logo stickers around the town or city, for example, might arise curiosity in some. That might be the beginning of something else.
1357  Economy / Exchanges / Re: With these acts, do we still believe in Centralized Exchanges? on: May 27, 2023, 01:40:58 AM
And what choice does an active trader have but to keep his/her funds in the exchange he/she is using. Even if you're not staking, your money will still remain on exchanges if you are actively trading. You can't just pull out your funds every time your order gets filled. You're burning profit that way.

Well, atleast a trader should first look for a reputable exchange which is not closing down tomorrow and sign up. The first test of security is the trustworthiness of the exchange and based on this, all exchanges are not same as some have proven to be reliable than others.

Of course, yeah, traders should be looking for the most trusted exchange out there. But who can tell, really? Exchanges are only trusted until they aren't. The ones that I mentioned were trusted exchanges, more "reliable than others." They aren't the ones that are more likely to close shop the following day. They are not to be categorized with the likes of YoBit, HitBTC, and others. But look where they are now.

Did the victims of FTX, Mt. Gox, Cryptopia, QuadrigaCX, and many others not "use them for what they are?"

Exchanges are privileged to recieve more than what they can hold or what they should be trusted to hold. They are used for what they are and even more than. That extra stretch causes the major helm

Failed centralized exchanges are of all kinds and sizes. They didn't die because they were trusted with so much. They simply failed; security failures, financial management failures, whatever.
1358  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Terrence Crawford vs Errol Spence - June 17 on: May 27, 2023, 01:17:20 AM
Still, I think Crawford is winning this match. As a matter of fact, to be quite frank, although this is a battle of undefeated fighters, I don't see this as a 50:50 match. I agree with the odds. Spence deserves to be the underdog. The last time he fought was more than a year ago. And then he had no fight in the whole of 2021. In his last few fights, he only had a UD against the two Garcias, Danny and Mikey, and only a split against Porter, who Crawford knocked out.
Crawford is the favorite, I'm not surprised though, I mean he has face tougher opponent that Spence in my opinion. And that Porter fight might be a good gauge as Spence went and it was very close fight, while Crawford just toyed with Porter and even if he is the aggressor, Crawford just want for the right time to knockout and I think that is the last fight of Porter.

I'm just surprised though that majority of boxing fans are not into this thread. They said that the want this fight and really disappointed that it was not done and should be announced in the Garcia vs. Tank fight, but here we are right now. I'm expecting that this thread is going to blow out.

Is it because many of the fans are already tired of talking and waiting for this fight to happen? And when it is finally announced, the hype is long gone? Or is it because this fight is long overdue and, contrary to what others say, these fighters aren't anymore at the top of their careers? Crawford is in his mid 30s already and Spence is just 2 years his junior. Or is it because they're not anymore the brightest stars in boxing today? Or possibly because they weren't fighting big names anymore in their previous fights? Promotion could also be an issue.
1359  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The huge amount of motivation MERIT give newbies on: May 26, 2023, 05:39:14 AM
I wonder how newbies found out about this forum. Are many of them long-time lurkers before they finally signed up? It seems many of them arrived here with ideas on merit and ranking up already.
Sometimes it is just them searching stuff on google and finding the answers on this forum and ending up signing up here. The reason why they seek merits can also be because of the limits that are placed on a brand new account like having to wait 6 minutes (?) to post again, limits on who they can send PM to or how many, not having avatar, etc.

Yeah, I remember I immediately noticed this avatar thing when I came here. Avatar is something very common among online platforms. I immediately wanted to wear one, too, but I couldn't find it in the settings. I later on realized it can only be worn by higher ranks.

Aside from those who are placing bids in the collectibles section, I don't think it is common among brand new users to make one post after another in just a matter of minutes. As far as PM limits is concerned, nobody probably came here to send PM to different users except those who came here to do business.

I wonder how newbies found out about this forum. Are many of them long-time lurkers before they finally signed up? It seems many of them arrived here with ideas on merit and ranking up already.

I used to read of newbies coming to the forum because somebody recommended them a place where Bitcoin is the main discussion and where knowledge could be gained.

If I remember it right, I got into this forum because of Primedice. That was during the earliest days of my Bitcoin encounter. There was no merit back then, but when I got here I never even thought of ranks. It was this curiosity that actually brought me here. Lately, I noticed that merit seems to be a topic among newbies already. I wonder how it becomes a motivation to somebody who has just arrived.
