Why should you save when you can rob other people, physically... And that is a valid solution model for individual in some ways. Not ethical, but still valid. I think social security as price paid for stability and general safety. Other option would be to kick out everyone who can't provide for themselves and are risk to others, but there is certain lack of places to place them and prisons can also be considered to be social security for prisoners, they aren't penal colonies were prisoners are set to make living for themselves... I don't disagree with the current system not being very good. On other hand I think that some system is needed. I'm probably a socialist, but I believe it's best for government to provide the minimum living standards for individuals. Sorry, man, my answer to you was censored (freedom of speech, my ass). Absence of Danny's private key, as far as I understand. When Danny sends btc to somebody, program actually spreads a word around whole bitcoin network, that output address X transfers that much to input address Y. And you can not impersonate Danny, because his word is signed by his private key, which you do not have. AFAIU, cryptographic witchery works this way. |

I double this analogy. You look for alternatives only when you are not satisfied with mainstream service. When I bought my first car (used one), I was pissed off by how badly those workshops rip my money off for basic maintenance. My friend advised my to buy $15 Haynes Mazda book in Borders. This saved me a lot of money. I kept the book in my trunk, and after short practice in my drive way, I could take many things in my car apart. IMO, same is true with crypto money or any other technology. If you are pissed of by you bank, learn how those alternatives work, spend some effort. Otherwise, just stick to your usual ways. |

Which wallet do you use to spend your bitcoins? This may not be a problem for you at all.
I use bitcoin-qt. A paper wallet is not an issue for me now, since I have too few btc to care about security so much. But, man, it is better to know about such things as sending change to new address before using bitcoins. Buy the way, thanks for all your nice explanations, very informative. |

This is important to know because 1)almost no one know 2)if you put all your btc on the address of a paperwallet and then you spend a part of them, that paperwallet will become empty. And then if you later try to use that paperwallet... surprise!
Man, this sucks. Should a client allow to choose between anonymity and using paper wallet without pain? The worst thing is that many (including myself before reading thread) really do not know about this dangerous feature.  |

Well, if you're willing to get hit 4-5%, you can always do MoneyGram via bitinstant.com. I've done that once, but the whole thing feels like a drug-deal. You print out some paper from BitInstant with a bunch of account numbers from companies you've never heard of, then you go to a local Walmart/7-11/whatever, hand them the paper, and they direct you to a red land-line phone (in my experience, sitting between a CoinStar and a Redbox). Then you talk to someone on the other end, and then you go back to the clerk, fork over a bunch of $ cash, and the money (less 4-5%) shows up in your Gox account.
As noted, I've done this once. Worked fine (and had my $ on Gox within an hour). Felt ridiculous having to use such silly things as a land-line phone at a physical retailer in order to buy an online crypto-currency, but such is life...
Don't go to whatever next time. Go to your favorite liqueur store. Last time I came there with paper from bitintstant, they gave me a discount on vodka. I payed too much anyway, and never going to use bitinstant anymore, unless I am in big rush. |

I am US resident, and I learned about bitcoins on Russian geek forum several weeks ago. Since technology looks amazingly interesting to me, I decided to try it out (get some, spend some, etc). It turned out that transferring, saving, spending bitcoins is a piece of cake. But buying them for $$ is pain in the ass. The best ways I found in US are coinbase (very slow, but cheap), and bitinstant (relatively fast, but I payed too much $$). As far as I understand, this is a reality of today. Never got to cashing out btc for $$. Suspect, that this is even more pain in the ass than buying.

Yes, I am talking about bitcoin-qt. It did not say that it is going to subtract the fee from transaction amount, instead, it said that I have insufficient funds because the fee is added on top of transaction amount. But, after I removed the fee from the total amount of btc in my wallet, I was left with leftover, which is smaller than the amount of fee indicated by the client first time.
Ok, I'll leave it as it is. May be I find some use for this dust later.
