Why hasn't anyone pointed out yet that the US currency system is far less efficient to maintain? How many employees work for the Federal Reserve and all it's banks? It's in the tens of thousands at least (although hard data is tough to come by on the interwebs). They work in huge buildings that require electricity and maintenance. I'd bet that the electiricity cost for the combined data backbone of the federal reserve system is far higher than bitcoin. What about the paper printing presses and "distribution" system? How about cars for the Bernanke to travel back and forth to Congress to argue with uppity congressmen? And, don't even try to compare Bitcoin to this giant waste:

The part that stood out in this article to me: $200,000 electricity/day & 60,000 transactions/day. $3.33 per transaction in electricity cost??? Anyone more bored than me care to fact check that? If that is anywhere close to actuality; this is not sustainable long term without a continued rise in BTC valuation. Transaction fees do not cover this cost.

I do not mine. I realize that the block reward justifies the expense, but for now long? Is CNN just way off?  My guess is that CNN is way off. Someone explain this to me.

The hashing power secures the network and helps verify transactions. I'd say that isn't a "waste".

Its like complaining about your car wasting energy while idling at a stoplight. Its powering the internal instruments and charging the battery, circulating coolant, etc..

Are you masters figuring it all out on your own or are there specific classes a person could take?  I'd like to learn how to write scripts and do anything and everything through the terminal window.

But from my understanding, you want to make sure that you know who the validator is. They might have a domain, registered corporation, signed SSL key with company information, the company owners might maintain a public social networking profile, etc...

Even if a validator colludes, the worst they can do is deny users access to the network. They can't drain account balances or discover your private key.

The XRPs used to pay for transactions are destroyed (this might seem counter intuitive but trust me its the right thing to do).

Биткоин opensource. И чтобы провести эмиссию нужно спросить у всех иначе этого клиента качать никто не станет. С риплами наиборот.

yvv, когда opencoin ОТКРОЮТ исходники своего сервера rippled, к которому подключается клиент (посмотри внимательно там настройки Advanced -> options) тогда можно будет говорить о распределенности, о их технологиях консенсуса и т.п. до этих пор, хоть 100500 клиентов нарисуй, все они ходят под ними, вон сутки у меня кошелек не подключался при рабочем интернете, писал offline, где тут p2p?

И даже когда станет все в шоколаде и они откроют все исходники и там не будет серьезных дыр в идеологии, все равно идея распределенной сети доверия имеет огромные проблемы.
Серьезные игроки трастить друг друга по крупному не будут, не идиоты (если ты кому то доверяешь в клиенте - trust, то этот кто то может пользоваться твоим лимитом доверия чтобы переводить через тебя и твоих клиентов денежные потоки, перекладывая на тех кто тебе доверяет риски на соответствующую сумму), а мелкие пользователи... мелкие будут использоваться как подстилка для проведения этих денежных потоков этими крупными игроками

В самом лучшем случае, когда никто тупить не станет, ripple можно использовать как унифицированный API и интерфейс по работе с биржами (например торги или ввод/вывод, может еще какие фишки можно прикрутить), и это хорошо. Грубо говоря чтобы сделать биржу достаточно будет просто подключить сервис биржи к ripple сети, не рисуя сложные интерфейсы пользователя (и не отбиваясь от dDOS, каждый по своему в своем велосипеде), а обслуживать только то что собственно и является биржей.

Waste of energy at least, I don't like when people think it's "just for free", because their parents pay it or whatever.
